Van Halen Plays Intimate Gig At Cafe Wha? In West Village Before Going On Tour (VIDEOS)

NEW YORK -- They'll be playing arenas when they tour next month, but on Thursday night, a regrouped Van Halen provided thrills in a tiny club where a VIP crowd stood elbow to elbow as the storied band played some of their greatest hits including "Jump" and "Panama."

"Welcome to Occupy Van Halen, ladies and gentleman!" frontman David Lee Roth yelled just before the band launched into "You Really Got Me," the first in an approximately hour-long, high energy set.

The show was at the famed Cafe Wha? in New York's West Village – a club owned by Manny Roth, the uncle of Roth.

David Lee Roth noted some of the greats that played in the club – including Bob Dylan – and told the crowd, "I'm more nervous about this gig than I would ever be in the Garden," referring to Madison Square Garden.

The band will soon be playing the Garden and other venues like it, as they kick off a nationwide tour next month. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers start the tour in Louisville, Ky., on Feb. 16, and will tour through June, hitting cities like Boston, Atlanta and Chicago. They'll also be promoting a new album: The group announced Wednesday that they'll release "A Different Kind of Truth" on Feb. 7, the group's first album with Roth since their celebrated album "1984," released that same year.

Van Halen has gone through plenty of changes since then. Roth left the band for a solo career and was replaced with Sammy Hagar in a messy breakup; he later returned to the band as Hagar exited in a split that had just as much discord. There would be more turmoil as bassist Michael Anthony was replaced a few years ago with Wolfgang Van Halen, the son of guitar great Eddie Van Halen.

But it was all smiles on Wednesday, as father and son, along with Eddie's brother and drummer Alex were all on hand as the reconstituted group played a warm-up of sorts before their nationwide tour, their first together in almost four years.

"This has been a really long time coming," Roth told the audience.

The band hardly seemed rusty. Though his mic was weak, Roth's voice wasn't, as his signature screech was in top form, as was Eddie Van Halen's scorching guitar play on songs like "Hot for Teacher" and "Dance the Night Away."

Roth joked about the small size of the club: "The last time I stood on a stage this low, I had to get the car home by midnight."

Later, he talked about how he used to wander through the club as a kid, dreaming of a chance to play on its stage.

"It took us 50 years to get this gig. It was easier to get in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame than to get this gig," he said.

Roth's uncle Manny, now 92, was in the audience, sitting next to John McEnroe, one of several luminaries in the crowd.

"It's come full circle," said a beaming David Lee Roth amid the audience's cheers.

Wow, VH can NOT go out on Tour until Dave gets his voice back. Dave 'talks' the songs now, as he doesn't have a voice any longer to sustain the actual singing of them. The rest of the band sounded good.

David lee Roth has lost it. This tour will be over after a few shows tops unless he learns to shut the F up and just sing. And I say that out of love.

David Lee Roth = over played hand + not that funny.

Reminds me of Angela Bowie, playing a small club on Santa Monica around 1982. Time to move on. Thanks guys for all your incredible performances from 20 years...30 years ago? You let your egos get the better of you then. Sad

If this is the $h!* they're planing to bring "On Tour" I can tell you now I want my money back. They sound terrible, out of harmony, off tune with D.L. Roth's EGO taking over the show. The only thing that did sound right was Eddie V's guitar. What a shame, I just wasted 6:21 minutes of my life.

Michael Anthony wasn't just the bass player, he was also the second vocalist whose harmonies were a major part of their sound. I saw the last "reunion" tour and it was obvious that they were pumping in his prerecorded vocals. Without him they're not really "regrouped".

Would have loved to have seen them in such an intimate setting. What a beast of a band. Damn.

Reading about this tiny show brings back great memories... I saw Van Halen in a high school gym in La Crosse WI when their album first came out in 1978... was working in a record store on State Street in Madison and got to hang with them as they signed autographs, then drove an hour to see their concert that night with my girlfriends. I still love rock and roll!

Hahaha...true! I didnt notice it earlier, but totally see the similarities. Tony could play the David Lee Roth biopic. Too funny.

So, I know that there is a big hubbub about Van Halen playing the Cafe Wha? last night, and while the club has gotten more press in one night than it has in the last 30 years, I feel a great disservice was done to certain employees of the club.
As with most of the clubs in that neighborhood that rely solely on their names, these decrepit tourist traps all have house bands.
I have a friend who is in the Wha House Band and they were to take an unexpected leave of absence WITHOUT PAY the night Van Halen came to perform. So while the owners are raking in money and millions of dollars worth of free publicity, musicians with families, children, bills, people struggling to make ends meet, have to go home without pay so that the club can accommodate some legends and they have to go home a day's pay short this week UNEXPECTEDLY all because the owners are cheap scum but this is pathetic and I think should be addressed with all of this hoopla.
I hope that some of my friends get their day's pay that they were f***ed out of all because someone bigger decided they needed the place that night.

That bites for sure. The owners, like most employers don't care about employees. It's good that you brought this to light. You probably won't find much empathy on this site from others, too many people trying to re-live their glory days

Dave, it will come full circle when KISS is your opening act. Glad to see that Van Halen will once again sound like Van Halen. Can't wait to hear some new material.

I saw them at the Oakland Coliseum when I was a kid.  David Lee Roth was wild.  My BF and brought Thai Stick, and the concert was awesome.  Unfortunately, we're all a lot older (as the Thai Stick reference will seriously date me!).  Great memories, though.

Eddie was staying in my area for awhile in NY, working with some doctors in a local hospital for his mouth cancer!

I ran into him in a lounge and hung out with him a few times! He actually called me! I was shocked!

He is such a nice guy! A down to earth sweetheart!

He gave me a bracelet and a check for my birthday! =) I was shocked again! =)

I too saw them at Madison Square in NY as an opening band for Black Sabbath, back then we partied during the opening acts but when VH came on we had no idea who these guys were but we halted all activity and our jaws dropped! Then the bickering with DLR and the VH days were over! I hated Sammy Hagar! I returned to see them w/Sammy and It will never replace the night at the garden they did every song off 1st album..awesome. I now have eruption as my ring back tone and people who call me complain all the time.. haha dated but GL guys won't be getting my $$$$
