'Occupy New Hampshire Primary' Heckles GOP Candidates On The Campaign Trail

Occupy

CONCORD, N.H. -- Not long into Sunday's Town Hall meeting at Don Quijote Restaurant in Manchester, Newt Gingrich was interrupted by Occupy protesters banging on the glass windows around the restaurant.

"Newt.. Newt.. Newt," repeated a voice through a bullhorn. "Director Newt. We have you surrounded. Come up with your hands up and your pants down."

Gingrich, who was discussing manufacturing, an issue of local importance in the Granite State, ignored the disturbance. But the heckling continued: "I'm not leaving until they take Newt out in handcuffs," someone shouted. Others held signs reading "Money out of politics," and "99% is too big to fail."

Ironically, as Slate's David Weigel pointed out on Twitter, the protesters outside distracted the audience inside from a question raised on corporate money's influence on the presidential candidates. The questioner implored Gingrich to stop accepting corporate donations:

"You are the 99 percent," he said.

"I'm in favor of jobs," Gingrich responded.

"Everyone's in favor of jobs!" someone else shouted out.

"Well, not necessarily..." Gingrich tried.

"Who's not in favor of jobs here?" the person fired back.

Gingrich said he didn't want to start a debate and moved on to the next subject.

Occupy New Hampshire Primary set up camp in downtown Manchester as the crop of presidential candidates arrived, and the group is making themselves heard days before the First in the Nation contest.

The movement continues to stop short of taking a partisan position, exemplified in a mock-ballot sign listing three options: 'Democrat,' 'Republican,' and 'We the People,' with a check mark next to the last. Shortly after the Gingrich event, demonstrators were on their way to protest President Obama's Manchester headquarters.

The Occupy sentiment also followed leading candiate Rick Santorum on the campaign trail. The conservative candidate was mic-checked after voicing his views on gay marriage at a Town Hall meeting in Hollis, and again at a stop-off at a local market. "Go back to your tent!" a supporter told the heckler.

While most often the candidates ignored the disruptions, Mitt Romney decided to engage one of the group protesters chanting "We are the 99 percent!" and "Mitt! Mitt! Mitt!" during a campaign rally.

"How about you talk?" Romney said. "Instead of shouting, why don't you say -- why don't you say what you believe? What's your opinion? Madam, what do you think?"

At the Newt event, Newt's personal security assualted an OccupyHartford protester which was completely unprovoked. The unidentified man ripped up a sign and pushed the person. The person is pressing charges. This part of the story needs to be reported. If anyone filmed it or witnessed it please go to the OccupyHartford web site and leave a note. Thanks
If the candiates think they can control and assult the public that comes freely to voice their opinions at their events they are deeply mistaken.

Why is it a regular component if left-thinking posters that they have to insult and engage in ad hominum attacks rather than state their positons and support them with some facts? Talking about someones weight, their wife's hair, or cleverly spelling someone's name incorrectly isn't political debate. As much as the Right has trouble making its points without sounding callous at times, the Left seems unable to speak intelligently using facts and adult prose. Come on y'all - let's step up the debate to something a bit more adult.

We are on the same team, some just don't realize it yet (no offense). For all of our sakes, I hope Ron Paul gets the nomination and the presidency. He is only the start though. Please urge everyone to follow the corrupt money trail and stop listening to mainstream (corporate owned) media, and government misinformation. The money trail, will always lead to the truth.  Ron Paul 2012!  Take our country (and planet) back! It will take all of us....we the people.
Peace, from your fellow citizen.

If you want to cut government spending on infrastructure, you're against jobs. If you want to cut federal pay indefinitely, you're against jobs. If you were against the auto industry bailout, you're against jobs. I forgot the 4th one, oops.

Newt wants to do infrastructure... but the federal government bureaucracy has grown far too much in recent years. Democrats like to expand the government workforce because they all vote for Democrats. And the Democrats like to bail out the auto industry because they get some of that money back in union campaign donations.

WE'RE SO SORRY TO DISRUPT YOU GINGRICH SUPPORTERS AND ANYONE ELSE WHO MAY BE CONSIDERING HIM, BUT, HE IS THE EPITOME OF THE 1%, AND HIS INTERESTS DO NOT SERVE THE 99%. HE HAS DECADES WORTH OF PLAYING A CRITICAL ROLE IN CORRUPTING THE SYSTEM. SO, LIKE I SAID, WE'RE SORRY, BUT, WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE AWARE, WHICH IS WHY YOU WILL BE SEEING US EVERYWHERE ALL OF THESE CANDIDATES GO.  SORRY!

OWS wants has no moral high ground on the people that took massive bank bail-outs. They simply want the same system, only tilted in their direction this time. The question isn't WHO should be getting government aid, its whether ANYONE should be getting federal aid. The answer is a resounding "no" from the American people. Stop taking our money to give to other people. Please, just let us alone. Let us live. Let us be free.

OWS isn't just about bailouts for banksters......, and it isn't just about entitlements or safety nets. It is about many problems with our current political system.
07:25 PM on 01/08/2012
The things I said are major concerns. I do agree with OWS that our political system has been corrupted by cronyism, but the solution is not to pass more laws like mccain-feingold. It is not possible to pass enough laws to stop powerful businessmen and powerful politicians from colluding together. The only way to stop this behavior is to make in unprofitable. Make the government irrelevant in the business world, and the "1%" will stop caring enough to bother buying politicians.
10:50 PM on 01/08/2012
OWS has no real message. If you ask anyof them what the government should change or look like all youll get is i dont know. Most of them are young koolaid drinkers with no real purpose, no jobs and dim futures. They most certainly dont represent the 99% of working americans who struggle everyday under this terrible regimes policies.

In my (unimportant ) opinion, I don't think that Newt should be legally allowed to even run for POTUS with his background. We don't need another power hungry racist in the white house. And please spare me from ever seeing Blondie as the first lady.A 6 year affair?!!!! Seriously??
06:47 PM on 01/08/2012
No one will take occupy seriously, until they get rid of the homeless, drunks and drug addicts and build a political platform. No one will listen until they become as serious as the PLO, Libya, Syria and the rest. Then people will notice. Forcing people to pick up your trash is not a political act.

From Crooks & Liars --- Awesome!

"They came with walkers. They came in wheelchairs. They even came with portable oxygen tanks in tow. A group of senior citizens who call themselves the "Wild Old Women" in San Francisco shut down their local Bank of America branch office earlier this week when they arrived to demand "the bank lower fees, pay higher taxes, and stop foreclosing on, and evicting, homeowners," in what they called "a run on the bank."

Via KCBS:

As they arrived, Bank of America closed and locked its doors, to the surprise and delight of the elderly protestors, who said that they had no intention of storming the bank.

The women waved signs, but didn’t march or chant, with one woman on supplemental oxygen adding that the group was too old for that.

If you're still sitting on the sidelines of the Occupy movement, what are you waiting for? These feisty little ladies just put you to shame."

Newt is for lower taxes. OWS is for higher taxes. When has lowering taxes hurt the economy? When has raising taxes helped the economy?

When has putting more gas in your car ever made it run worse?

It depends on the type of economy you have. We're still in a period of deflation, lower taxes are actually a good thing right now. However, a large portion of those who are supposed to be paying more taxes than the average american, pay none at all. How much did GE pay in taxes last year? not a single dollar. how much did they make in profits? 5.1 billion. That profit isn't getting spent either, its staying in a panamanian bank vault, dodging taxes.
Getting that money and spending it would be a huge boost to the economy (depending on how you spend it of course), having it sit in a foreign country collecting dust wont.
