William Coleman, Joe Arpaio Deputy, Killed On Duty

By BOB CHRISTIE   01/ 8/12 06:12 PM ET   AP

PHOENIX -- A sheriff's deputy was shot and killed while answering a burglary call in the north Phoenix community of Anthem early Sunday, and other deputies shot the suspect, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said.

Deputy William Coleman, 50, and his partner found a suspect in a van with a pit bull dog at a medical building at about 4 a.m., Arpaio said.

The man got out of the van and opened fire with a rifle, striking Coleman under his bulletproof vest. The deputy was taken to a hospital but doctors could not save him.

It isn't clear if Coleman was able to return fire, but other deputies eventually shot and killed the suspect, Arpaio said. The dog was calm and was taken to a sheriff's animal shelter.

Arpaio said investigators were trying to figure out why the 40-year-old man opened fire.

"We're trying to determine his identity, his background, to see if he has warrants or was involved in other criminal activity," Arpaio said. "I want to see who and what his background is, what caused him to come out shooting."

Coleman was a 20-year veteran. He is survived by a wife and two young children, ages 4 and 7, Arpaio said. He also has grown children in another state.

Coleman was assigned as a patrol deputy but had previously worked the sheriff's lake patrol unit.

Last year was one of the deadliest in recent history for law enforcement officers, with 173 killed in the line of duty as of Dec. 28, a 13 percent increase from 2010, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Of those, 68 federal, state and local officers were killed by gunfire in 2011, a 15 percent jump from the year before.

"There seems to be a war on cops across the nation, and here in Arizona," Arpaio said Sunday.

Dear media,

Cops k!//ed in the line of duty are not heroes. They are people k!//ed while working.

These "people" were killed protecting you and every other day-to-day citizen. They are heroes everytime they step out of their safe homes, facing the danger of being killed everyday, while others sit in offices and work from home worrying about hand cramps or what soup they will have for lunch. America would be run down and destroyed if it were not for the men and women whoe put their life on the line every single day. Why dont you step up to that plate and walk in their shoes? Doesn't sound so easy protecting everybody in major cities now does it?

It is always sad when an officer gets killed in the line of duty.
And by the way, this has nothing to do with immigration or Latinos.

On the other hand, the rifle was more than a "rifle." He "used a variant of an AR-15 assault rifle and shot unique military grade ammunition that has a steel core, giving the slug more penetrating power, investigators said" (Seattle Intelligencer)

And this was all legal since the shooter had no record that would have prevented him from owning and using these weapons.

But we don't have a problem.

As the nation's attention turns back to the fractured debate over immigration, it might be helpful to remember that in 1986, Ronald Reagan signed a sweeping immigration reform bill into law. It was sold as a crackdown: There would be tighter security at the Mexican border, and employers would face strict penalties for hiring undocumented workers.

But the bill also made any immigrant who'd entered the country before 1982 eligible for amnesty — a word not usually associated with the father of modern conservatism.

In his renewed push for an immigration overhaul this week, President Obama called for Republican support for a bill to address the growing population of illegal immigrants in the country. This time, however, Republicans know better than to tread near the politically toxic A-word.

Part of this aversion is due to what is widely seen as the failure of Reagan's 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act. However, one of the lead authors of the bill says that unlike most immigration reform efforts of the past 20 years, amnesty wasn't the pitfall.

"We used the word 'legalization,' " former Wyoming Sen. Alan K. Simpson tells NPR's Guy Raz. "And everybody fell asleep lightly for a while, and we were able to do legalization."

The law granted amnesty to nearly 3 million illegal immigrants, yet was largely considered unsuccessful because the strict sanctions on employers were stripped out of the bill for passage.

..............SAYS IT ALL!"........

I think people may have lost sight of what this is really about. A human being, like everyone else on here, lost thier life this past weekend. This is a time to put our opinions away and pray for the family.

I am a counselor in the law enforcement field and my husband is a police officer. I can not imagine the horrific pain that his family must be going through at this time.

Some of these comments make me feel very sad for the lack of respect for life that is happening. Please show some respect for a man who worked 20 plus years protecting our rights and safety and gave his life doing just that. Please take a moment and send prayers and stregth to the family.

It is tragic. Another victim of gun proliferation. 30,000 Americans lose their lives to gun use yearly.

They have identified the shooter, and have made progress in the case, yet there has been no update here on HP.

That fact, combined with the initial headline, makes it seem that the only reason that this story was even posted here was for sensationalism, rather than journalism.

Joe Arpaio is like Arizona's answer to the confederate flag. By all accounts, Deputy Coleman was murdered while actually trying to do the job of a real law enforcement officer, a concept which has fallen out of favor with the Sheriff.

How has Sheriff Arpaio not performed his duty as a sheriff ?
11:34 PM on 01/09/2012
So sorry for the officer who did not deserve to die and for his family.

The story should be more about the fallen officer rather than Arpaio.

Arpaio causes too much damage to Arizona and to prisoners. When a dog gets loose, we are safer if it is a well treated dog rather than a dog that has been abused, starved, and treated like prisoners in Arpaio's jail in order to turn it into a mean, junk yard dog. There's a lesson there.

So we should be nice and give prisoners sugar cookies and let them serve their sentences at Disneyland or Kings Dominion? Maybe we should let them serve out their sentences at nice B&Bs out in the country or maybe at health spas. That way they'll be nice and mellow when they get out.

Jail isn't supposed to be nice. It isn't a vacation spot. Jail is for prisoners and they should be treated like prisoners.

If a dog gets loose and it's a nice dog, we treat it as a nice dog and get it back to its home. If the dog is a hazard to humans, it gets shot or locked up.

Because it isn't about the Deputy. The Deputy is merely a prop used by Bob to attack Sheriff Arpaio. Bob doesn't care about the Deputy.

An Officers Fate

The Officer stood and faced his God, Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, Officer. How shall I deal with You?
Have you always turned the other cheek? To my Church have you been true?"
The Officer squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Cause those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep,
Though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me, I wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.
They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand.
I've never expected or had too much. But if you don't, I'll
understand."
There was silence all around the throne where the saints had often trod.
As the Officer waited quietly for the answer of his God.
"Step forward now, Officer, you've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's Streets. You've done your time in Hell."

RIP Officer Coleman

I'll tell you, based on Joe Arpaio's reputation, it's probably a good thing that the suspect was killed. If he wasn't and was convicted of the murder and ended up in Joe Arpaio's jail, it would not be a very pleasant experience for him.
