30-Story Hotel Built In 15 Days In China (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 01/09/12 02:58 PM ET Updated: 01/09/12 02:58 PM ET

Constructing a skyscraper once took months if not years to build. But not anymore, and certainly not in China.

In this recently released time-lapse video, a 30-story hotel is built in just 15 days, or 360 hours.

Constructed in Dongting Lake in Hunan province, the hotel is 170,000 square feet and can withstand a 9.0 earthquake reports Treehugger.

According to the International Business Times, the prefabricated modules were put together in a factory and then placed on steel structures at the construction site.

The Chinese company behind the speedy design and building is Broad Group, a firm which previously built the 15-story Ark Hotel in Changsha, China, in just six days.

So.. it wasnt really built in 15 days.. It was assembled...

Yeah, I'm an engineer working for a general contractor and we could absolutely build a building like that in 15 days if 1) you had the entire excavation work, foundation and building underground utilities complete 2) Steel was already fabricated and onsite 3) the pre-fabricated panels were already complete and onsite 4) we could hire 150 carpenters and pay them $1.50/hour and none of them made mistakes. (impossible, which is why it's nearly always worth it to pay a good employee what they're worth then hire several bad employees at a reduced wage to do the same job at a lower level of quality which often will require re-work)

This is a wonderful propaganda piece but all they've done is do the work off-site, giving the impression that the building just flew up. In reality, fabbing all that material and punching out the building took and will take several months.

I agree. This was a prefab building , only assembled in 30 days. Still interesting to see, but I wouldn't want to chance living in it. For the very reasons you state above.

This is impressive at todays standards....we the USA can no longer compete with that. The EMPIRE STATE BUILDING was built in 13 months (look it up)...in the middle of a depression...without todays equipment and materials...in the middle of a congested city...etc..that was a feat. But sadly, there were casualties, today that would not be tolerated and rightfully so. Today we cannot build 1 mile of flat roadway in 13 months. Sorry Pro-Union Dudes ....but you don't put in a full days work anymore....And You know it!!!

Hey Huff Post ....thumbs up for posting this article. More like this would be nice and less Celebrity Bull..bay bump stuff ....and less reality TV news....you are making us a dumber society with that stuff

and the empire state building was built by Union Iron workers who were paid a decent wage for a days work, and not treated like scum like union workers are today by the Ruling Class elite who want cheap slave labor only so they can have even higher profits than any time in history.

For people who don't have a clue about construction including the people who wrote this article.

This was not constructed rather the iron workers finished the structural steel components of the building in 15 days. Something we very easily can do in america if we wanted or didn't have unions. The time lapse starts on the first floor of the building. Some people don't know what goes into a 30 story foundation. Think about ground zero and how long it has been. They just recently got out of the ground and i do understand it was in NYC with a previous foundation but put it in perspective its been 10 years.

Concrete alone needs a good 28 days itself to set up to its desired PSI. There are excelerators and what not but they wouldn't be able to form the foundation in 15 days let alone construct an entire building.

As for chinese steel unfortunately that is what we are using over here more and more. Its cheaper to ship steel from china then it is to make it over here. Thank the unions for that.

Its time for this stuff to motivate the US to continue to innovate and get back to what made us the greatest country in the world and it all starts this year with getting that idiot out of office. Do we want to end up like Europe or continue to compete with the chinese?

That's right - blame the working guy for everything. Of course it has nothing to do with the greedy corporations .....
01:25 PM on 01/10/2012
I am the working guy as i'm sure you are. I get paid what I'm worth not what I say I'm worth or what the industry says I'm worth. I have a job because i'm good at my job not because it is my right to have a job. The unions have screwed this country up beyond belief. I have worked with union constractors and open shop contractors. There are your good and bad on both sides. Differnece is the union jack the prices up on everything from groceries to the construction of roads. Not only do the prices go up but do does the time it takes to get something done.

Go ahead attack the major corporations that give union and non union people their jobs they go to everyday. Once again their are good people and bad people as there is everywhere. Who are you to tell them due to their talents and smarts they do not deserve their pay check or the money they are able to produce for their companies? Its a joke and its time for people to smarten up and make their own way rather someone else make it for them. Stop relying on the government and unions to get you through you daily life. At that point you are no better then the people and countries everyone in this country left to get away from.

Large corporations are where the majority of your union workers are employed...

How much you wanna bet that once the foundation starts to settle, the whole thing tips over like the tower of pisa? And I really laughed out loud at the "air 20 times cleaner than outside air" line. Of course it is! Everyone knows the air in some gym sneakers is cleaner than the air in China!

It'll stand up to a 9.0 earthquake? Of course it will...because nothing says quality, strength and dependability like a 'Made in China' sticker.

It was assembled in 15 days. Not constructed. The construction was the pre-fab work done before the modules were shipped to site

So what, it is still an impressive feat.
03:18 PM on 01/16/2012
All the better that it was.
An engineering feat in and of itself, a model of which we need to bring back here to america, and start building things intelligently, rather than the way they have always been done. Everyone knows labor is the most expensive aspect of building construction, pro-union or regular workers, either way. Not to mention there are a tremendous amount of injuries in the construction industry, and a lot of that has to do with constructing in hazardous conditions, things lying around from various trades, etc... Being union made only means it was expensive. Codes are codes whether one is union or not. Being a gang member doesn't constitute stronger skills or knowledge. Nor does it mean smarter or better men.

Constructed/assembled using cookie cutter components, yes there is a huge difference.

But it is still and incredible accomplishment.

During WWII, we were building transport ships at a rate of a ship a day without the technology we have available today.

It shows what can be done when we put our collective efforts into something.

This is like our govt and money. Hotel built in 15 days but they don't count how long it took to assemble pieces in factory!

My Dear Sweet Friend,

That was absolutely wonderful! We are so proud of the Japanese skill in modern technology. Truly, they shall lead the world into the most prosperous age in history!!! As the FREE DAY REVOLUTION grow throughout the world, technological advancement will be immediately critical. Though the rest of the world will have already picked up the techno slack, Japan is ever on the forefront of advancement and new technologies.

We hope the rest of the world will continue, and even increase, there support of Japan's techno-based economy.

Are you refering to this story because it's a Chinese company not Japanese.

Ouch! Yes! It was the Chinese! Hooray for them, too!

Thanks so much!

You need all those air purifiers when you build everything with lead.
07:54 AM on 01/10/2012
Did they use Chinese made steel? They can't even make a screw that will hold up to the torque of a handheld screwdriver, especially a flat head screw. I removed some bolts the other day and saved them because I knew they were American made. They did not strip or dent. An earthquake? I have been worried about the buildings we have built here with the same garbage. You think the Trade Center towers fell in a hurry? Think about those sorry screws and imagine how well they build an I beam. Makes you think about when that building you just stepped in was constructed, huh? Before or after our steel plants were closed and our jobs were sent to the great screw, I mean screw makers.

That's why we need to bring our good old American steel plants back online! So we can show the world what USA steel is all about.
