Alabama Beats LSU In BCS Championship Game 21-0

RALPH D. RUSSO   01/ 9/12 11:54 PM ET   AP

NEW ORLEANS — Jeremy Shelley kicked five field goals and Trent Richardson broke a 34-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter as No. 2 Alabama beat No. 1 LSU 21-0 on Monday night – the first shutout in BCS title game history.

Richardson swept around left end and raced down the sideline to the end zone with 4:36 left for the first touchdown between the Southeastern Conference rivals in more than 115 minutes of play and one overtime period.

Alabama (12-1) had put it away before that as Shelley kicked field goals of 23, 34, 41, 35 and 44 yards in the first three quarters to make it 15-0, matching an all-bowl record. He also missed two field goals and an extra-point attempt.

But this time, the missed kicks didn't matter to the Tide.

The Tigers (13-1) and Tide met on Nov. 5 in what was dubbed the Game of the Century, and the Tigers won a touchdown-less, defensive standoff, 9-6 in overtime. Alabama went 2 for 6 on field goals in Tuscaloosa.

Richardson, the Heisman Trophy finalist, ran for 96 yards on 20 carries and offensive player of the game A.J. McCarron passed for 234 yards as the Tide had no problem moving against LSU's second-ranked defense in the nation – just not into the end zone.

Alabama's top-ranked defense didn't need much help. With All-American linebacker Dont'a Hightower leading the way, the Tide held LSU to 92 total yards and five first downs.

For the Tide, it's the second BCS championship in the last three years under coach Nick Saban, who also won a title at LSU in 2003.

In a bowl season filled with high-scoring games, the top two defenses in the nation set the tone at the BCS title game. And much like the first meeting, special teams were pivotal.

The Tide's defense was dominant and linebacker C.J. Mosley had the first takeway of the game in the third quarter, his last play of the game as it turned out.

LSU's Jordan Jefferson started to scramble toward the line, but at the last second flipped the ball toward Spencer Ware. Problem was, Ware had turned to block and Mosley snagged the ball and set up Alabama at the Tigers 27.

Mosley was twisted down to the turf by Jefferson and his left leg bent awkwardly. The sophomore stayed down for several minutes and as the medical staff worked on him Alabama fans chanted his first name. As he was carted off, sitting up on the back of a golf cart, he got a huge ovation and pumped his fist.

Alabama couldn't convert the field position into points as Shelley dropped to 4 for 6 on the day, missing wide right on a 41-yarder with 5:38 left in the third.

The next time down, he booted a 44-yarder, giving him more field goals than any kicker has ever had in a college bowl game. His seven attempts were also a record.

The Tide faked a 49-yard attempt early in the second quarter and went with a shovel pass to backup tight end Chris Underwood that gained 4 yards. He reached the first-down marker by the nose of the football.

The drive didn't last much longer and Shelley's 42-yard attempt was blocked by LSU defensive tackle Michael Brockers.

Shelley came back to make one from 34 yards with 4:24 left in the half, and from 41 yards as time expired in the first half.

Alabama opened the second half with another solid drive that stalled, but Shelley tacked on another 3-pointer from 35 yards.

LSU's offense was shut down completely. The Tigers managed two first downs and 66 yards through three quarters. The Tide, led by linebackers Courtney Upshaw and Mosley, gave Jefferson no space to run the option and only short gains when he passes.

It was Alabama's special teams that struck first in the first BCS title game to match teams from the same conference.

Punt returner Marquis Maze found a lane and broke into the open around midfield, though he pulled up instead of trying to get around punter Brad Wing and grabbed his left leg while running out of bounds at the LSU 26 after a 49-yard run-back.

Maze, the Tide's leading receiver, had to be helped over to the Alabama sideline, but he had put his team in scoring position. Maze didn't play again.

McCarron completed a 15-yard pass to Darius Hanks to set up first-and-goal, but LSU's defense, ranked second in the nation behind only Alabama, stiffened.

Shelley, who made one field goal and had another blocked in the first meeting between the SEC rivals, was perfect on a 23-yarder with 5:00 left in the first quarter.

It didn't sound like an LSU home game at the Superdome, about 80 miles from its Baton Rouge campus. The dome was deafening on almost every play with a crowd that was much closer to 50-50 than partisan.

The racket coming from the crimson-clad Alabama fans might have even contributed to a mishandled snap by Jefferson on the first LSU series.

More than a few people questioned whether Oklahoma State should have been given Alabama's spot in the BCS championship game, but the Tide won over the voters and earned a rematch with the Tigers.

Knew they would. Still need a playoff system. BCS system blows. Top 16 the saturday after conference championships, left with 8 winners=4 major bowls. JAN.1 or 2. Not spread out over 5 or 6 days. Left with 4 winners, 3rd round saturday after new years games with at least 5 days off, left with 2, give them 2 weeks off, then national championship game the saturday before superbowl weekend. It ain't rocket science. And just think of the MONEY your gonna rake in all you bowl cronies. Stadiums will be filled to capacity because every fan on both sides of the ball will be there cheerin for their team, thinkin their team has a chance to win it all. Not to mention teams having to wait, IDLE for 20, 30, 40+ days to play again. Total possible games, 16. Too many games you say? Some of these players will be going to the NFL where they will be playing 16+ games a season. What better preperation can you get.

For all of you talking about how 'boring' the game was, consider this:
-LSU handled West Virginia in their regular season game.
-WVU set a BCS bowl record with 70 points against ACC champion Clemson.
-Alabama held LSU to 92 yard of offense, and had the ball for most of the game. LSU made it into BAMA territory ONCE.

Face it, you non-SEC people need to learn to love defense if you want to earn a national championship.

This my opinion of the LSU/ALABAMA game that there was under the table dealing going on. Playing like LSU was playing all year and to be shut-out in this game making less than a hand full of first down. Something is fishy here. I believe someone should be investigated!!

Just shows what you know about football. Look at the stats from the first game.

I miss the old bowl system where only think that mattered was pride and tradition.

Excerpt from SI ---
...

"Which leaves us with a very strange dichotomy: Alabama won a national championship in utterly convincing fashion, yet the result was utterly unsatisfying. The Tigers, not the Tide, won the SEC championship. The Tigers, not the Tide, remarkably beat three of the five BCS bowl champions (Oregon, West Virginia and Alabama). The Tigers, not the Tide, won the teams' first meeting, in a road game that at the time was a presumed elimination game.

...

Thus, it will be hard for the college football world to unconditionally immortalize Alabama the way it normally does a national champion. The Tide will be remembered for an utterly dominant final game, but their season as a whole was fairly unmemorable. They beat an eventual 9-4 Penn State team the second week and 11-2 Arkansas a couple of weeks later.

And then they didn't beat another team with that many wins until ... Monday.

In a sport that champions the notion that "Every Game Counts," only the final one truly mattered this year. LSU had the better season. Alabama had the better team. The Tide could not have done anything more to prove that, but it sure would be nice if there was a way they could."

If you want your team to play in the BCS, get a defense. Losing to a second rate team like Iowa State is reason for elimination.

Congratulations Alabama. You had the better team last night, I am still terribly proud of my LSU Tigers. 13-0 season in the SEC is unbelievable!

LSU has a great team. I am a serious Bama fan and I can tell you we had the greatest respect for LSU before the first game, after the first game, before the last game and now. LSU is the only team in the country that Bama fans were afraid of having to play.............. We prepared accordingly and you saw the results. LSU will be back next year and could be playing Bama in the BCS again, who knows. After all, there are no other conferences that can play with us at this time. Congratulations on a great season.

I would like to see a 12 team playoff with the top rated 4 having a first week bye. Three weeks and then the championship game.

For those discussing frustration with the BCS system:

There are 122 FBS Division I-A college football teams. There are 131 FCS Division I-AA college football teams. Even with individual conferences in each division it is impossible to do a bracket system. There are too many teams. I agree there needs to be a change, but what are the alternatives?
01:04 AM on 01/11/2012
Just go by the top ranked 8-12 teams at the end of the year.

All you do is move the argument from #2 v. #3 to #8 v. #9 (or #11 v. #12).
The season must be made into the playoffs, where 6, 16-team conference champions play in a 6 team bracket.

You win your conference, you go to a BCS game. You don't, you shut up and try again.

Of course this system will cut 25-30 FBS teams out, but let's be serious, are Akron or Idaho, or Eastern Michigan really contenders?!

I think its important to realize that all the non-SEC teams who keep claiming their offense is so great and mighty, yes, your offense looks great.... Against non-SEC defense. Its been proven time and time again that these "great offenses" in the north are really just average when stacked against the great physical defenses in the SEC and that these SEC team "with no offenses" actually have great ones in comparison.

As an old former defensive back for a 14 time national champion, I loved the game... bad assed defense! Red dog! No ya don't! I gotcha! That's as good as a touchdown to me! And to do it against a team as good as LSU is awesome. As the comedianne Jerry Clower once said... "Them tigers is always tough!" I've played Nebraska, Penn State, Ohio State... and I have the proper attitude about them... nothing but respect. OSU and Stanford were pretty good this year, but LSU was better... and Bama was the best... this year. But win or lose, I love Bama, just as you should love your school and not demean mine. Next year we'll see. That's why we need a playoff system, the 8 best teams in the country. And we need a stipend system for the players... they like sodas, chips, women! Bama and every other team actually make money off of football, so lets get real and help these often times poor players... and you knew I was going to do this... ROLL TIDE!
06:20 PM on 01/11/2012
I think we do need at least an 8 -12 team playoff, it would get rid of all this controversy. Having said that I still think Bama was the best team this year because they have an unbelievable defense. I am a Big Ten guy, but we have alot of work to do if we want to compete at the championship level.

The Tide play a good game, but please....do not play in a championship game unless you bring your A game. Les Miles disgraced LSU by not changing QBs.

Soooooooo? Put the much slower pocket passer in the game to do what? Give up more TO and let Bama run up the score? He would have been killed. Did you even watch the game?

Yeah I did!!!! Did you see Jefferson throw any further then a 15 yard pass and get sacked. Isn't that why you have duel QBs, in case the first one stinks? What the heck were you watching??

Sorry, we actually have standards. We don't let anyone in our colleges just because they can throw a block but can't read.

Thank you, MisterCee. I would love to compare the Stanford and USC SAT scores against LSU and Alabama.

I think that could be said about many colleges and universities. There's always "bending the rules" a bit.

LSU's BCS demise is reminiscent of their take-down in the 1960 Sugar Bowl. On Halloween night 1959, No. 1 LSU met No. 3 Ole Miss in Baton Rouge. Ole Miss led 3-0 until future Heisman Trophy winner, Billy Cannon, returned a late 4th quarter punt for a touchdown to give LSU a 7-3 win. In the Sugar Bowl rematch, Ole Miss held LSU to negative rushing yards en route to a 21-0 victory.
