BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 Update Shown Off By RIM At CES 2012

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Research In Motion showed off a major update to the QNX-based software running its poor-selling PlayBook tablet and unveiled minor improvements to its legacy BlackBerry phone software at the Consumer Electronics Show on Monday.

But the Canadian company's products were left off the list of hot new devices being touted by AT&T, the second-largest U.S. carrier, highlighting the challenges for RIM in reinvigorating its flagging fortunes in that hyper-competitive market.

Instead, AT&T featured high-speed devices from such RIM rivals as Samsung Electronics, Nokia, HTC Corp and Sony at the Las Vegas gadget show.

RIM last month delayed the expected launch of its next-generation phones using QNX software, widely seen as a make-or-break overhaul for a company that once dominated the smartphone market.

At the time it said the delay was necessary so it could make use of more powerful and energy-efficient chipsets expected to arrive in mid-2012. The chipsets would enable the phones to operate on high-speed networks using a technology known as Long Term Evolution (LTE).

The U.S. carriers are racing to build LTE networks and heavily promoting devices that can handle the emerging standard.

RIM's PlayBook 2.0 software adds in-built email, calendar and address book functions and the ability to run Android applications.

RIM's tablet was launched last April to scathing reviews complaining about its inability to handle email and other features associated with the Canadian company's smartphones.

RIM also added a video store in the PlayBook upgrade with thousands of films and television shows available for purchase or rent, and said a BlackBerry smartphone paired to the tablet could act as a remote control or wireless keyboard and trackpad.

RIM did not provide an update on when it would make the free software update publicly available, repeating a planned February launch.

The Android advance - which RIM did not highlight in a statement but did confirm later - may be the most popular feature with consumers wary of a dearth of apps for the next-generation software, which will also run RIM's future phones.

But the integration of core BlackBerry functions is arguably more significant - proving that QNX works with the RIM infrastructure that crunches and encrypts data sent out to its BlackBerry smartphones.

RIM says it will have a QNX phone by the latter part of 2012, after initially saying it would be ready by early in the year. The PlayBook software update was also delayed; it was initially due some time in the summer of 2011.

RIM sold just 850,000 PlayBooks from the tablet's launch in April to the end of November, and took a $485 million hit to write down the value of unsold inventory it has discounted sharply.

The smartphone software upgrade - to version 7.1 - adds a function called BlackBerry Tag that allows two BlackBerry phones equipped with a near-field communications (NFC) chip to share information and content by being tapped together.

The upgrade also means a BlackBerry smartphone can be used as a mobile hotspot to share its Internet connectivity with up to 5 other devices including laptops and tablets.

Unless RIM gets the point that they will not sell these excess tablets until they drastically lower the price for them , then they will continue to lag behind. Heck if they dropped the price of the playbook to $99 or $150 like the touchpad , then i'd be the first in line to purchase as many as I can for my family and myself.

I am holding off for a ASUS Transformer Prime! I already have a junky iPad2 32g That I got free from work but I despise it because of its lack of Flash and other compatibility problems with the stupid Safari browser. My cousin has a Galaxy Tab 10.1 that I tried for while and really liked, especially over the iPad2. I need a MicroSD slot and 10+ hours of battery though, so the Transformer Prime is right up there on my wish list. Android's app store has way cooler apps too! The Apple App store looks like it is geared for children and non-technical people.

I'm also waiting for a transformer Prime. Please note: you might want to wait for the new and improved Transformer prime. They fixed a problem with the devices shell which reduced its ability to maintain a strong wi-fi connection and it will come with 2x the resolution.

Personally what sold me on the Asus tablet is : micro-SD and SD card slot. Two additional USB ports on the dock, and, of course, the double-your-battery-life dock.

Who cares if tablets only have 16/32/64 gigs when you can interchange 32g micro SD cards on the fly !

Best of all, if they live up to their promise, they'll unlock the SD card so it'll do both read and write - so if your friend has a awesome book or movie you want, just switch SD cards, make a copy, and give him his memory card back.

Yes, I am waiting for the release of the "fixed" version. I don't think the flawed wi-fi version ever made it out the door though. I only know about pre-sale orders of it, but they were on hold until the fix was made. I agree about the card slots and USB ports. Why in the world ANYONE would want something without either of these common interfaces is beyond me. I guess they are more concerned about the cute Apple logo on polished aluminum case than they are of functionality and expandability. Hell, even my Cloud-Only Google Chromebook has both. And it only has a web browser-based operating system. So Google could make the Chrome browser talk to MicroSD and USB, but Steve Jobs just couldn't figure it out at Apple. Not even a Firewire port on the iPads! WTF????

I bought a 64 GB playbook and am really impressed. I won't be buying any other tablet for a long time. This gives me everything I need from business apps to games. Good, really good.

Hi @Vapula,

Alex from RIM here. Good call on picking up a PlayBook – sounds like you’re really putting it work! As much as I’ve enjoyed the PlayBook up to this point, PlayBook 2.0 definitely cranks it up a notch. From new apps and content, including support for the Android App Player, to improved messaging and more powerful pairing with a BlackBerry smartphone, there’s a lot to be excited about.

We’re going to have more news and announcements coming from CES 2012 throughout the week, so keep an eye on our Inside BlackBerry Blog for the latest: http://bbry.lv/cWR2rg.

Cheers,
Alex, RIM Social Media Team

After having mine since April, I'm really upset that I was so shortsighted as to only get the 16gb version. I'm now going to have to get a second one.

With these articles, it is all about the clicks. From now on, I am no longer clicking on any headline that has the term "apple rival" or "ipad rival" I hope everyone does the same. Maybe then they will get the message to start doing some unbiased reporting in regards to tech and listing everything as apple rivals.

When the iPad is by FAR the best selling tablet then yes every other tablet is an iPad rival... Should they call it s Touchpad rival?

Also what would make this article unbiased, if they called it a great tablet? It is just now getting features that should have been there at LAUNCH... Email, really?

Yes, I saw their financials. Share price is a quarter of what it was a year ago, they're taking a $430 million write-off for the PlayBook -- they cut the price in half, and still nobody wants them -- and the board of directors wants to fire the two CEOs. And didn't IBM just dump all their Berries and switch to Droids? Or maybe was that only in Australia? I just caught that briefly.

Yes they just released a new OS version at CES, and it's possible they can pull it out. But I won't bet my rent on them being healthy.
