Fisherman Catches Dog

A fisherman kayaking on the Gulf of Mexico over the weekend made one catch he'll never forget -- a dog swimming for his life off the Siesta Key coast.

What initially seemed like a bizarre rescue actually took place following a horrific tragedy, when a drunk driver fatally struck the dog's owner in a hit-and-run accident approximately one mile from the shore, according to ABC Action News.

Authorities told the local Patch that they found Donna Chen, 53, face down on the pavement that afternoon, while her dog, Barney, was nowhere to be seen.

Police said that the suspected driver, Blake Talman, was fleeing another crash scene when his Nissan Altima spun out of control, striking Chen and Barney, as well as some landscaping, a street sign, a telephone line, and several wooden poles lining the entrance to a church, according tot he Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

Talman and his passenger were both taken to a local hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

It wasn't until after posting the rescue video to YouTube that the kayaker connected the accident to his timely rescue.

"Our guess is that [the dog] was so freaked out and traumatized that he just wanted to get as far away from there as possible," he wrote in the video's description. "And when he ran out of land, he took to the water."

The kayaker pulled the visibly distraught and injured dog to safety. He is now with the family and is expected to make a full recovery.

Talman, 22, is charged with DUI manslaughter in addition to DUI property damage and personal injury.

They did not mention the rescuer's name because he needs not be named. He is GOD!

Interesting how, in the entire article, they never mention the rescuer's name.

The CBS news article mentioned his name as Rory O'connor.

STRING THIS KID UP BY THE NARDS! BY HIS AGE HE KNOWS BETTER! Barney's life is worth more than the life of a no-brain punk who will do the same stupid kinds of things for the next 50 years if he survives that long. Dogs live about 12 to 15 years. We should try to ensure that they have a good life. They are here to show us the MEANING OF LIFE. UNCONDITIONAL COMPASSION. If you think your dog is here for any other reason...just spell DOG backward. As for the poor owner, my thoughts are with her family. I hope they can move on and resist the urge to do anything as stupid as this Talman kid did. I don't know if I could resist taking the law into my own hands after something like that.

I think dogs are a lot smarter than we think. That dog did not just jump into the water and swim to that kayak because he was scared, he swam to him because he was the nearest person to him that could help him and his owner. This story is heartbreaking, but also displays that dogs are wonderful and incredible.

Why do some people spoil a good-hearted story by saying God came to the rescue when a person died and a dog lived? If God, "called the woman home," why couldn't she have just simply died in bed instead of having to be hit by a car? Why scare the crap out of an innocent dog that feared for its life? This is not benevolence, nor is it a case of God or Dog to the rescue. It's called life, which happens all the time without the influence of a dog coming to the rescue. Well, unless it's a St. Bernard.

+1 to that.

I would've done the same thing. I am a big animal lover and I am glad to see the dog found this person so that he could save him...

I found it very weird that the man never spoke a word to the dog.

Weird is if the dog speaks!

listen closely, he talked to him from the very beginning, telling the dog to come to the boat.

What a wonderful humanitarian this gentleman surely is. I am really sorry that Barney's owner was killed. It is heartening to know that at leasy Barney will make a full physical recovery. Emotionally only time will tell. God bless this good man and thank Him for Barney's extremely fortunate rescue. This DUI guy needs to spend many, many years in prison for his reckless irresponsibility.

Barney was bleeding AND swimming in the ocean. Darn lucky he wasn't shark bait.

Good dog story though. I hope he gets a good new home.
