Afghanistan Taliban Insurgents Attack Government Building, At Least 10 Killed

Afghanistan Taliban Attack

SLOBODAN LEKIC   01/10/12 09:07 AM ET   AP

KABUL, Afghanistan — Taliban insurgents stormed a government building in eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday, setting off a firefight that killed 10 people, the Interior Ministry said, the latest sign of insurgent strength after a decade of war.

A statement said three attackers broke into a communications building in Sharan, the provincial capital, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of Kabul.

In the ensuing firefight two of the attackers set off their suicide bomb vests, it said. In addition to the three attackers, three policemen and four employees of the Telecommunications Ministry were killed in the attack, the statement said. Two officers and a civilian were injured.

The Taliban claimed responsibility and said it involved multiple targets. In a statement emailed to journalists, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the governor's office, the provincial reconstruction team and the intelligence headquarters were all hit.

The ministry, however, said only one building was attacked.

Paktika province borders Pakistan and is one of the main routes for Taliban fighters infiltrating into eastern Afghanistan from their sanctuaries across the border. It is also one of the main strongholds of the al-Qaida-linked Haqqani network, which has been blamed for a series of spectacular attacks, including suicide bombings inside Kabul.

Elsewhere, a joint Afghan and coalition force killed seven suspected insurgents and captured 30 in Balkh province, 180 miles (300 kilometers) north of Kabul. A military statement said the guerrillas used rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire to engage the security force. Caches of homemade explosives, pressure-plate bombs, weapons and ammunition were seized.

An explosion in Kunar province killed two Afghan soldiers, military spokesman Gen. Mohammad Zahir Azimi said. Six soldiers and four civilians were also killed in the blast.

In a separate development, officials said the U.S. and NATO are continuing to reorient their supply lines toward to the so-called Northern Distribution Network through Russia and Central Asia, rather than through Pakistan, which served as the main conduit for the logistics chain in the past.

Pakistan shut down the alliance's main transit routes from the port of Karachi in November in response to a NATO air attack on a Pakistani border post that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

About 85 percent of military fuel supplies now passes through the northern route, said a U.S. official who could not be identified under standing rules. Nearly a third of other supplies that used to arrive through Pakistan are now using the alternate route.

For most of the 10-year war in Afghanistan, 90 percent of supplies shipped to the international force came through Pakistan, via the port of Karachi. Over the past three years, road and rail shipments from NATO's European members through Central Asia have expanded. Before the border incident, they accounted for more than half of all overland deliveries.

Gee, I thought the Taliban were going to enter into peace talks to bring a peaceful resolution to this conflict. There must be some mistake! It must have been Al-Queda or some other terrorist group, but not the Taliban. They just want piece! Every piece of evry country that they can get their hands on. This is going to end just like the Viet Nam War!

You know, we spend billions on dealing with nuclear waste. Why doesn't he US dump this waste along the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan so that those who cross at other than authorized crossings fry from exposure. It would certainly keep the Taliban from hopping back and forth. Now, now, it's just a thought. :)

You know, you just might have something there. If they crossed illegaly, they would set off geiger counters and possibly glow in the dark, so they would be easy to see at night!

And Obama want to talk peace with these people ??? On what planet ? All they know is killing and that's all they'll ever know. We haven't even withdrawn 3,000 troops and they're continuing their campaign of terror. What does that tell ya' about the Afghan governement and how good they will be protecting themselves. ? Just sorry so many American soldiers lives went for naught in this God forsaken country. Give it to them and don't waste another life over there. Once they've taken over nuke the whole damn place once and for all. OOPS ! Forgot,,,we'll first have to apologize to the entire world for helping the Afghan people. Then nuke 'em.

Aslong as the Taliban is supported by Pakistan, and they allow them to go back and forth across the border there will be war....Just like Iran/Syria in Iraq....these people breed hate and it will go on forever.....Just a fact in the middle east....

It sounds like the Afghan cops in the communications building in Sharan, the provincial capital did their jobs. However, its very hard to defend against someone who is intent upon blowing themselves up along with you and many other people. Sucide attacks do not accomplish anything other than showing how despirate, cowardly, and how cruel the Taliban is in attack civilian targets. Unforunetly, more people died than was necessary. If the Tailban soldiers had any "real guts" they would simply attack NATO forces directly. But they don't.

psuffield.....Got it all figured out huh? Suicide bombers strike fear in people who want to live. I don't think anyone who is there can take them as lightly as you seem to be.

I am sure the British thought as psuffield when Daniel Morgan wouldn't line up like the Red Coats but had his marksmen fire from behind trees and targeted officers (barbaric).
"The guerilla force only has to keep from losing to win while the conventional force must win to keep from losing...time is on the side of the guerilla."
---- Sun Tzu "The Art of War"
The CIA defeated the mighty Soviets in Afghanistan with guerilla tactics and at the end the Soviets committed to a "surge" with their elite Spetsnaz but after 10 years the Soviets withdrew and within 2 years the Soviet Empire fell.
In Việt Nam General Giap was committed to a guerilla war losing every battle. He was willing to lose 10+ soldiers to every US soldier, he did lose every battle but won the war.
You would think that our Harvard educated president would pick up a history book. In his "surge" in Afghanistan 2/3rds of all the US KIAs in Afghanistan have occured since his "surge" started in 2009 (not even counting those missing arms, legs and brain function). I have a friend a former Soviet Spetsnaz (it's is a fraternal friendship Rangers and Spetsnaz) who would explain to our president his folly in Afghanistan in one sentence..."Afghanistan is easy to conquer impossible to occupy."

Afghans have been killing each other for thousands of years. They were killing each other before we got there, and they will be killing each other after we leave. What they have proven is that Trillion dollars in military and aid spending did not change much in 10 years. We could have given every Afghan 30 thousand dollars and gotten better results and less dead Americans.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that the Taliban was no longer a threat.

Unless one side or other decides to end it. It will go on forever. The common citizen will suffer most. Most all the politicians and police are all paid off. Mostly with US funds.

The Taliban destroyed the ancient Buddha statues in Afghanistan when they came into power 2000ish. We have gone mad and lost the U.S.A. if we negotiate with them. They will destroy all freedoms of mankind with their brand of ISLAM

The blowing up of the ancient statue is when the US started to negative propaganda about the Taliban. That was a precurser to war on our part. Then the towers were bombed. On that day, before the towers collapsed, there was a news break on CNN. The scene was at night and the correspondant reported that the war had started and you could see tracers flying in the background. The news went back to the towers and nothing else was said about Afghanistan that day. My first thought was how did they connect Afghanistan that quick. Your description of their type of Islam is quite twisted. True Islam will destroy no freedoms here. I don't know who you are talking about when you say mankind.

If it was okay for the other presidents then it is good enough for President Obama. Are you forgetting about the negotiations with Iran and Iraq? Rumsfeld and Cheney along with the neocons would like for you to forget.
