Barack Obama Links Presidential Candidates To GOP Rivals In Congress

Barack Obama

By ERICA WERNER   01/ 9/12 10:42 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON -- On the eve of the crucial New Hampshire primary, President Barack Obama told supporters Monday that the Republicans vying for his job out on the campaign trail are no different from the ones opposing his policies on Capitol Hill.

Speaking at an evening fundraiser at a Washington hotel, Obama several times dismissed "the Republicans in Congress and the candidates who are running for president," saying both groups were trying to eliminate needed environmental protections, roll back the minimum wage, dismantle Medicare and gut spending on education, research and infrastructure.

"Republicans in Congress and these candidates, they think that the best way for America to compete for new jobs and businesses is to follow other countries in a race to the bottom," Obama said. "We can't go back to this brand of you're-on-your-own economics."

The president didn't mention any of the Republicans by name, and made only a couple of passing references to New Hampshire. But it was his most explicit effort yet to link the GOP presidential field with the unpopular Republicans in Congress – a strategy the White House has been signaling it would employ.

Obama also sought to recapture some of the energy of his 2008 campaign, telling about 700 supporters at the Capitol Hilton that their work was far from finished in 2012.

"The very core of what this country stands for is on the line," he said, adding, in another swipe at the GOP field: "Don't take my word for it. Watch some of these debates that have been going on up in New Hampshire."

Obama didn't talk about Tuesday's New Hampshire primary, but did tell supporters at one point that a sense of common purpose still exists in the country – even if "maybe it doesn't exist here in Washington and maybe not on the presidential debate stage of New Hampshire, but out in America, it's there."

Supporters paid $100 per ticket to see Obama speak at the reception as the president got back on the fundraising trail for the first time in 2012, something he'll be doing with increasing frequency through the November election.

At an earlier event Monday at the swanky Jefferson Hotel, Obama joined around 25 guests for a closed-press round table discussion with tickets $45,000 each and proceeds split between his campaign and the Swing State Victory Fund, which supports Democrats in battleground states.

Wise man...going for two-fers. He needs help the next four years, to get this country perking again, and it sure won't happen with the tea loon crazies and McConnell' Senate and Boehner's House.

Keep thinking Romney winning, please, and GOPoopers will stay home. Better numbers that way ! Landslide...

Why did we elect people who repeatedly block any sort of legislation, good or bad, agree or disagree, just because they don't like the guy leading the country?

"We can't go back to this brand of you're-on-your-own economics."

Ug. The plan originates from Ron Paul but it can't be trusted with any of the other Republican candidates otherwise you're right...the 1% will keep what they have and the rest of us will be out of luck. If any of you care...or have it in you to open your mind a bit. Take a look at Paul's town hall meeting in NH where he has the opportunity to explain things a bit better. I know some of you just want to take shots at him but I'm most interested in hearing from people who have thoughtfully watched the meeting and still don't like him. (If you don't mind) I don't care if you ff thru Rand's opening...lol

The GOP candidates, the GOP do nothing Congress, and the failed GOP governors, all defend the rich and will fight until the end for them.
They also have the exact same extreme social agenda- privatize social security, turn medicare into a State voucher system, ban all abortion and birth control, let greedy corporations, factories and banks self regulate, increase taxes on the middle class and poor to pay for additional tax cuts for the rich, and destroy unions to further degrade the middle class.

We need to vote the GOP out this year, in large numbers, and finally get this economy working for the middle class again, while fixing and preserving Medicare and Social Security.

All you have to do is examine the history of this republican campaign to realize they are marching in lockstep. One says god told him to run, they others say the same thing. Another condemns abortion, the others jump on that bandwagon. One signs a pledge to not raise taxes, the other chime in "me too." One says he created jobs in his state, the others ay they will too. There's no originality in this group of yo-yos. And every one of them reflect the attitudes of the current Congress...do nothing, oppose everything. This is what the republicans call progress.

And how are Democrats different? I still hear clueless Democrats crow over the GM bailout... Nevermind that GM used the bailout to move more factories to communist China!
06:26 PM on 01/10/2012
Who signed free trade with communist China? NAFTA? Who supports amnesty for illegals which drives down wages? Who supports H-1b work visas?
Clinton signed most of these into law. But Democrats support all of these!

Obama said. "We can't go back to this brand of you're-on-your-own economics."

AFTER 230 odd years of this Country's citizens scratching, saving, and sacrificing life, limb, and treasure to make the Country great for ALL CITIZENS this you're-on-your-own-economics is EXACTLY what the Repubs want to go back to....which is easy to do when you're in the 1%...

Our forefathers, and their children, all the way up to the Great Generation that sacrificed mightily in taxes and lives during the Great world Wars did so WILLINGLY so they could pay it forward to the generations to come.
And now becasue of a few cherry-picked bad examples the Repubs want to paint everyone that isnt like them as lazy and draw a line in the sand to refuse to help them, and say "Nope, whats mine is MINE. Screw You."
...even though they are paying the lowest tax rates in a generation (or two)

How Noble.
Only in Repub Land...

Headline says, *Obama Looks To Kill Two Birds With One Stone*
and i sez self, "I dont' know what the birds did, but until we find out, why doesn't he just put the birds into indefinite detention with no Due Process? that way he could feel good about himself".

Then I read Obama said, "The very core of what this country stands for is on the line," and realized that his calendar is broken, cuz what this country stands for - as was provided by the former Bill of Rights- was on the line 3 or 4 weeks ago, so he must have forgotten that he and Congress finally agreed to ditch the rule of law in favor of Indefinite Detention with no Due Process.
Anyway, i wanted to thank the President again- and will try to do so every week from now on- for siding with the Republicans and turncoat Dems who want to finish off this project formerly known as the USA and wish him luck in the upcoming election...er.. appointment.. by the 1% to a second term.

The bill as it arrived on the president's desk was veto proof. Obama did the only thing he could do. Signed the funding bill and provide a signing statement saying that the Administration's position is that the NDAA is considered unconstitutional; and for that reason his administration would not enforce it. The alternative was to veto it; have the bill overridden and become law without his signing statement. DUH !!

Ok fanboy-
Yes he made some smarmy tip 'o the hat to our former Bill of Rights BUT President Obama's signing statement, however, suggests he plans to ignore that part of the law he just signed:
He wrote:
Sections 1023-1025 needlessly interfere with the executive branch's processes for reviewing the status of detainees. Going forward, consistent with congressional intent as detailed in the Conference Report, my Administration will interpret section 1024 as granting the Secretary of Defense broad discretion to determine what detainee status determinations in Afghanistan are subject to the requirements of this section."
Indeed, all the window dressing and happy talk in the world from the likes of you, will not hide the powers that this President, and Bush/Cheney before- and those following them- have, AND WILL reserve to their own discretion.
Enjoy.

Regardless of what any poster on the Right will say here, there isn't a single Republican policy or proposal that won't usher in additional pain and deprivation on this nation.

The Republican mindset is dissipated, corrupt and immoral.

Not for everyone, just for the lower 99.6%, whereas Democrats want to usher in pain and deprivation on the top 0.4%. Well, maybe "pain and deprivation" is a little strong - more like the inconvenience of having to wait for a red light on the way to take your private jet to Paris for dinner.

President Obama is exactly right. The GOP contenders for president are no different from the GOP incumbents on Capitol Hill that have twisted themselves into pretzels and beyond to thwart his policies solely for the sake of doing so and with complete disregard for what is actually best for and needed most by the country. GOP incumbents have made no secret of the fact that their A-1 priority is to prevent Mr. Obama from serving a second term, and the sad sack GOP contenders have made it clear that they have no substantive or sensible ideas for improving up the president's programs, policies, prerogatives, and performance.

The Republicans have abdicated the role of the loyal opposition. Rather than try to improve or alter proposed Democratic legislation, they have decided to lie about it. Rather than provide workable ideas of their own, they have stonewalled Democratic attempts and focused on rhetoric instead of legislation.

Maybe you glossed over the part about "workable ideas of their own."

The minority party, whoever that happens to be, doesn't get points for tossing bills to the Senate that they know have zero chance of becoming law. It's a waste of time and taxpayer money, all in the name of political posturing.

12-15 bills out of how many the Senate considers? Senate Budget? All budget bills start in the House. Is that the best you've got?

links?? how about this link to what obama said .. "The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that, "the buck stops here." Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."
~ Senator Barack H. Obama, March 2006

Either you're not very well informed (in which case you might want to read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_public_debt) or you're deliberately twisting the facts. The US has been borrowing money to pay its debts for decades. You may call this "reckless fiscal policy" and ascribe the problem to a "failure of leadership" if you like (though neither accusation would be correct), but blaming President Obama for it is flatly outrageous considering factual history and the uncooperative behavior of the radical right from the moment the man lifted his hand off Lincoln's bible.

Perhaps this will TEACH YOU some History:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Federal_Debt_1901-2010_.jpg

notice how the debt lowered under Clinton then immediately started rising under W then shot through the roof as Obama was being sworn in and BEFORE he even began to craft legislation
