'Pawn Stars' Think They May Have Found A Very Valuable Book (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/10/12 09:25 AM ET Updated: 01/11/12 10:40 AM ET

Monday night on "Pawn Stars" (Mon., 10 p.m. EST on History) Corey Harrison and Chumlee Russell had a book appraised that they thought could be a first edition of Walden by Henry David Thoreau.

A first edition would be a big deal -- the appraiser tells them one could sell for as much as $25,000. She checks the book out as the guys look on nervously.

The good news? It is a first edition. The bad news? It's an English first edition, which is not as rare and thus not as valuable. The last one she saw at auction had a guide price of $500 to $600 but eventually sold for only $100.

"Pawn Stars" airs Mondays, 10 p.m. EST on History.

But when the girls decide to enlist Caleb's hacking skills to help with their quest, Hanna no longer wants a part of the plan. Instead of focusing on figuring out who the "helper" is, Hanna decides to put all of her efforts into throwing a surprise party for Caleb. But will a surprise party at Spencer's lake house be the diversion Hanna is looking for, or just a recipe for disaster? Meanwhile, Aria and Ezra must deal with the aftermath of coming clean.

Only an idiot doesn't know that a Pawn shop is out to make money. They are not going to offer you anything close to what your item is worth. They will try to take you every time so they can make a huge profit...then they brag about it. You people need to wake up. Anyone reading this should have the knowledge of looking on their computer to Google and see what the item/items that they want to sell is worth. From the comments that I have read, most of the people are in agreement that they rip you off...so think before you give it away.

"Value" and "worth" are pretty elastic concepts. What are the conditions under which you set the worth? Retail in a high end store? local auction with the farm equipment and storage lockers? wholesale? For one thing, how quickly do you have to sell it? Would a guy on the street pay you the same price he'd pay for "it" in a store" ? Are there a LOT of people out there who would want it? Or is it only a few people who would want it as something special ? How much time and effort do you have to put in to find those folks and let them know what you have ? and make sure that what yo have is really what they want in it's details and conditions. If you are selling to some one who will re-sell it -- who does have a better access to the buyers who really have a high demand for that item-- that intermediate buyer will demand that the price he pays includes the probability (risk) of making a profit on the sale, which includes paying a share of the overhead of the business. What you makes on the coconuts you loses on the roundabout.

How did a TV show ever get this much attention? There has been a story about this show on HP for the last 3 weeks. Who is getting paid off here? Come on there has to be some money changing hands for it to have 3 stories in 3 weeks about the same dumb TV show,

Also, Thoreau was a wackjob and everything he said was worthless
03:44 PM on 01/10/2012
If Thoreau was a wackjob and everything he said was worthless, then why is a first edition of his book worth so much money. I believe the truth is that at least some of what he said is worth 25,000 dollars.

Thoreau was anything but a wack job. He was a very smart philosopher. I may not agree with everything he wrote but he was a very provocative man. Have you even read any Thoreau??
