Tamara Tunie, 'SVU' Actress, Opens Up On Being A Victim Of Theft

Tamara Tunie Victim Theft

JENNIFER PELTZ   01/10/12 12:47 PM ET   AP

NEW YORK — "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" actress Tamara Tunie spoke out Tuesday about being a real-life crime victim, saying her former business manager exploited her trust to steal more than $1 million she earned by working doggedly at a peak in her career.

Blasting Joseph Cilibrasi as a "menace to society" as he was sentenced to 2 1/2 to 7 1/2 years in prison, Tunie said he insinuated himself into her life by joining in birthday parties, weddings and other family events, only to use that closeness to embezzle from her and leave a lasting hole in her family's finances.

"Show business is fickle, and though I have been blessed with a healthy career, who knows how long that will last?" Tunie told a Manhattan court. "As an African-American woman, roles are few and far between, and I cannot reasonably hope to replace what was stolen."

Cilibrasi, 51, pleaded guilty in the fall to stealing from Tunie and other clients, including screenwriter Janet Roach and Kansas City Symphony music director Michael Stern. Cilibrasi used some of the stolen cash to finance his own forays into entertainment, including investing in movies and Broadway shows and hiring a screenwriter to pen a script about a historic building, the Manhattan district attorney's office said.

Cilibrasi didn't speak at his sentencing. His lawyer, Gerald Shargel, said Cilibrasi has accepted responsibility and expressed remorse.

In pleading guilty in November to grand larceny and other charges, Cilibrasi admitted he stole more than $1.4 million from Tunie by writing checks to himself from her accounts without her permission and by secretly opening a credit card account in her name, then getting his own card on the account by falsely listing himself as her husband.

The thefts came between 2000 and 2009, years Tunie described as a career high. Best known for playing medical examiner Melinda Warner for more than a decade on NBC's "Law & Order: SVU," Tunie also has appeared in Fox's "24" and other series in such films as 1997's "The Peacemaker," starring George Clooney and Nicole Kidman.

Tunie told the court that she often worked three jobs at once, and that she supports her 77-year-old mother and helps nieces and nephews pay for college.

In cultivating his clients as friends, Cilibrasi "preys on people who believe they know him, who count on him for his expertise" and rely on his professional ethics, Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Peirce R. Moser told the court.

Cilibrasi acknowledged in his guilty plea that he stole $75,000 from Stern by pocketing checks he told Stern to write to cover some federal and Missouri state taxes. Stern was hit with tax penalties because the money never got to authorities, Cilibrasi said.

Cilibrasi also acknowledged opening a credit-card account in the name of another client, screenwriter Janet Roach. Her credits include 1985's "Prizzi's Honor," starring Jack Nicholson and Kathleen Turner.

Stern said in a letter to the court that he'd endured years of tax trouble because of Cilibrasi, whom he'd trusted as a friend but now considers "a con man through and through and a born liar." Roach said in a November phone interview she was saddened that Cilibrasi "brought this upon himself" but was glad the matter was resolved.

Cilibrasi used some of the proceeds of his crimes to back such shows as "Legally Blonde: The Musical" and the Tony Award-winning "Spring Awakening," and films including the Tunie-directed "See You In September," prosecutors said when the case was unveiled in 2010.

Prosecutors said Cilibrasi also used some of the ill-gotten cash to vacation in Italy, Puerto Rico and Los Angeles, and to hire a writer for a script about Bannerman Castle, an elaborate building on an island in the Hudson River.

I hate to hear that she is one of the many actors and actresses who have been taken for a lot of their hard earned money by crooks.

One last point~advisors often have pictures of their children and family on their desks, bring you water or coffee, you sit at a lovely desk, they look good, they will invite you to their family gatherings or come to yours, a bond might develop....keep your eyes open. If the money were not there, would this lovey relationship still be happening? It's business. Keep your friends, your friends and your business, your business. Just the way I feel about it. And if the bond develops and this trust grows, why wouldn't a true friend want you to know about something that is yours? Why wouldn't they encourage that? Even the medical profession has changed. Now doctors explain what your disease is~they often have diagrams of the system they specialize in on their wall to teach you so that you understand what's going on with YOUR body, they explain procedures in detail, you are a partner in your health. This happened b/c so many people took info off the internet and brought it into their offices. This has challenged the profession to include the patient in their care. This approach is the same with money~health and money~two very important things. We need to treat both in the same way.

Tamara Tunie is one of the most gorgeous actresses on t.v. today. We have LOVED watching her in any role she takes on. I believe in her and have faith that she can come out of this.
When dealing with money, your hands should be shaking. Trust no one. No matter how busy you are, how charming, smart, funny, "connected etc. the money advisor is, it's your major priority. Trump told his children to not even trust him in one of their growing up lessons. Why is this so? Why can't we just connect with an expert and do what we really care about, what's really important to us? Because no one cares about your money the way you do. No one cares about why you need the money the way you do. No one cares about your story more than you do. So then what to do? Learn about money, about investing money, ask a million questions, keep up on it, show your interest. If an investor/advisor says, "relax, I got this one." Explain, "Look, I need to know about my money." If they don't get that, walk. I am sorry to say this. And this goes for anything important in life, buying a home, a refrigerator, a pair of shoes, loving a partner (without looking crazy of course). If there is something important to you, you've got to keep your hand on it. That's how I look at things in this part of my journey.

so she is stupid too....wow
11:24 AM on 01/11/2012
No, she most decidedly is NOT stupid. After that shallow, offensive response, though, we know now that you are...

its a shame. She's a great actress. I loved her in "As the world Turns"

I think she is a wonderful address. All of you haters out there talking about her and the negative statements you make is just hate or even jealously. How do you know affirmative action got her the job. You are correct, you should allow someone to have that much control and easily assessibility to your money. It happens all the time.........

I was watching an SVU episode from 2008 were they implied that George W. Bush was a child molester. I will never watch this show again. These writers should leave there polital BS out of there pathetic scripts.

Watched Tunie for years on As the World Turns and SVU. At least she stepped up and followed through with charges. But nobody should ever be allowed that sort of access to anyone else's accounts. I don't care how rich or "busy" they are. Nobody should ever allow somebody to write a check off of their account. Trust Nobody - unfortunately, this is what it has come to.

Trust is a hard thing to always understand. When you become famous you tend to think people care about you and have your best interest at heart. Tamara is one of my favorite character actors. I hope the best for her.

Maybe she shouldn't have brought race into it...but what she said was not a lie.

I don.t know why black people in particular are still being victimized by this same thing that others like James Brown and Ray Charles have warned about.

These stupid stars deserve what they get. They trust their personal information to assistants, agents and business managers. Here is a novel idea earn you own money, cut down on the entourages you think you need, write your own checks, pay your own bills, and you will not need all the leaches and hanger ons. Of course they will not be there to feed you enlarged egos but you will not have as much need for lawyers, and in the long run will have more cash.

You don't seem to get it. Not everyone is a CPA (I doubt you are), and Ms. Tunie had a substantial amount of money to invest.

No, I am not a CPA but I can do simple math and own a calculator.

Wow! So much hate. So you know for a fact that Ms. Tunie has a huge entourage? And she has an enlarged ego? And she didn't earn her own money? And you know this because . . .

I did not say she did not earn her own money, I said she should have control of the money she has worked for and earned instead of allowing flunkies access to her personal info. Her business manager had a credit card in her name and said he was her husband read the article.
