Tim Tebow Still Giving NFL Whiplash: Patriots' Turn To Face Tebow, Broncos

Tim Tebow

By JIM LITKE   01/ 9/12 08:03 PM ET   AP

-- Tim Tebow is still giving the NFL whiplash.

Over the course of the regular season, he went from bad to good to occasionally spectacular, then back to being a bust. Such a bust, that all but one of the defensive coordinators preparing for the playoffs had already moved their game plans on the Broncos' quirky QB from an email folder marked "active" to the "curiosities" file.

They hardly expected to see him again.

All those self-appointed experts who said Tebow couldn't keep winning in the pros playing quarterback as if he were still in college were girding for the last laugh. That was supposed to come Sunday, when the Pittsburgh Steelers arrived with a banged-up, but still-No.1-rated defense in tow.

Instead, it's New England's turn.

"And I'm sure," Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said, "there's not a lot of guys on our team that slept great last night."

Small wonder. The book on Tebow was supposed to be closed after he and the Broncos, winners of six straight at one point, lost their last three and looked clueless in the last two of those. Patriots coach Bill Belichick pulled it out when New England trounced the Broncos a month ago and it read something like this: Stack up defenders close to the line of scrimmage to stop the run; have a linebacker shadow Tebow, then move the corners and safeties around at the last second to disguise the thin pass coverage; dare him to throw the ball.

Denver coach John Fox faced similar schemes more times than he cares to count, but for the first quarter against the Steelers, the Broncos failed to complete even one pass. Pittsburgh safeties Troy Polamalu and Ryan Mundy kept creeping close to the line with almost every snap, leaving wide-open spaces behind them. The novelty of the "read-option" offense the Broncos adapted from the college game for Tebow's sake appeared to have the shelf life of a carton of raspberries. Then the second quarter rolled in and Tebow looked like Steve Young, completing four passes of 30 yards or better, something that hasn't been done in the NFL in 50 years.

A day later, Fox struggled again to explain the transformation.

"You know, football is football," he said.

But the fact that his offense worked so well at some times and so poorly at others still seemed a mystery. Fox finds himself defending the scheme as often as opponents do.

"They played that kind of football at a pretty high level in college, you know, and there have been some very successful, productive offenses in this type of offense. But it's a little unique for the National Football League," he conceded.

That's because once the novelty of the "read-option" wears off, once the league's defensive brain trusts have enough game film to study it, they should be able to shut down the run component. Also, Tebow has yet to prove he can win a game playing like a conventional NFL passer. There's also the danger of exposing a running quarterback to frequent collisions with NFL-caliber safeties, who run like deer and deliver hits like compact SUVs. That last thought may have crossed Fox's mind.

"Having that guy as a run threat is not the first time that's ever happened. We competed against Michael Vick for years there in Atlanta and it presents problems," he said. Conveniently, Fox didn't recall how all that running also presented Vick with problems. He was hit and hurt so often that he was forced to become a pocket passer. Either way, Fox wasn't making immediate plans to change Tebow's style in time for next weekend's trip to New England.

"So you know, we've had different approaches. Our opponent this week, we played earlier in the season. They had their approach and obviously the Steelers had a different approach, like everybody does. It presents problems," he added, "but it's unique to whoever is calling the defenses."

On paper, it looks like a mismatch: Tebow against Belichick, who's been successfully scheming how to ruin a quarterback's life long before Tebow was born. Then again, the same could have been said about Dick LeBeau, who called the shots for Pittsburgh's defense and learned a new trick to his everlasting regret on the first play of Sunday's overtime period. Just as the Broncos had on 21 of 22 previous first-down attempts, they came out in a run formation and put a wide receiver in motion. And just as they had on all the previous attempts, Polamalu and Mundy started sneaking up to the line. And then Tebow confounded everyone but his own coaches – at least this once – by standing in the pocket and throwing a simple slant – the way every other starter and backup in the NFL has to do just to survive training camp.

Then again, no one expected Tebow to make it out of there, either.

No wonder he smiled mischievously when he said afterward, "We keep believing."

Even if few others do.

Hard work beats talent when talent does not work hard. From a poster Tebow had on his wall as a kid, says it all. Hope he keeps giving the NFL whiplash

The thing Tebow does that drives most football people crazy i think is that he proves you can win playing sandlot football in the NFL. While everyone on the other team is analysing play photos taken from over the stadium and poring over hundreds of complex plays and doing statistical analysis the Bronco's offence stands in the huddle and Tebow says something like "ok Bruce you go left and stop across from that red medical cart over there,,Bart you go right and curl in near that cheerleader with the black hair and Fred you run to the endzone.
If nobody's open i'll run."
Coaches have made football so seemingly complicated now that when Tebow does his thing and wins it pokes a hole in the n.f.l mystique.

I doubt that Tebow prays for his team to win. When he is on the field he'sprobably prays to play to the best of his ability, that his team does so as well, and that nobody on either team is seriously injured, When he is not on the field he probably prays for the poor and needy. The media hypes this story just to irritate the anti-religious miority crowd.

I am as liberal as liberals get. I am NOT a Christian - and I have always found ostentatious displays of religiosity to be offensive - no matter who does it.

That being said - Tebow played a GREAT game against an admittedly depleted Steelers - and had more than a little look of Steve Young - another left-handed running quarterback (hall of famer - btw) about him in so doing...

If Ben Roathlesberger had played even the 3rd and 4th quarter the way he ended the game Pittsburg likely would have won

Not a big fan of the buzz in the God Squad, but to Tim's credit, he put the ball into the hands of his receivers and they caught the ding dang thang!
So, there you have it! The receivers grasped the blessed ball, and Tebow garners the praize!
COOL!
Bow down! rejoice! for tomorrow your fortunes may be different, but it does not mean God loves you less!
Check out the S N L skit! perhaps a bit on the blasphemous side but LOL!

I'm always amazed with this god's on our side philosophy. When things go good, the entity had god on their side. When something bad happens to your enemies then god punished them. It was Pat Robertson who said that when Karina hit NO, it was god's way of punishing America for its abortion policy. Of course when the some of the deadliest tornados decimated the bible belt, you'd think they would come to the conclusion that god hates evangelicals. But then I suppose whether you are talking about football or anything else, you can always spin anything to fit your world view.

Hah, hardly. Faith uses circular reasoning to defend itself ("this is so because the Bible says it is so"), issues double standards to justify the same things happening to non-believers as believers (punishments vs. "tests of faith"), and ultimately falls back on the "I just believe it and you can't convince me otherwise" argument.

Faith by its very nature is not to be conquered by rationality or actual thought. You might as well try to eat soup with a fork.

Personally, I don't believe his style of play is sustainable. The one position where players have the shortest careers are runners. Not too many runners over the age of 30 and many sustain multiple injuries over their career. Tebow is a good runner, but a poor passer. Only a matter of time before his bell gets rung, gets chopped off at the knees, ripped a new *****, or gets his clock cleaned.

That's a new angle on the debate.. I agree with you. Can he emulate the other "running" quarterbacks who settled down as pocket passers later in their career? I tend to think not. There's a reason why no one in the NFL has run an option-style offense for like, ever..

Through many of Tebow's successes in college, he never had a offensive coordinator that understood how to take advantage of his skill set. If he had, the Gators would have won at least one more national championship. Now the same thing exists in the pros. Denver needs an offensive coordinator that believes in Tim and won't break weak by going conservative.

What I would really like to witness is Tim Tebow blaming the Lord for causing Tebow's team to lose. Fair is fair.

Lately I have been having a problem with Tim Tebow and his Jesus stuff because I felt that there was no passion behind his belief when he states it. I've sort of changed my mind, and here's why: Tebow is being used by evangelicals to promote the cause. In Tebow's defense I think he doesn't realize that he's, if you'll pardon the pun, a political football. There is an ongoing meme by Christian evangelicals that Christianity is taking a beating. Newt Gingrich and for that matter Rick Perry said that at Saturdays debate. The fact is there is no war on Christianity. You're not being prevented from celebrating your faith like during the Crusades. They can take the churches down but that won't end Christianity as long as you hold the belief in your heart. Shame on all Christians for doing this to Tebow.

Tebow may end up being just good enough for the Broncos to waste 6 years on him before they move on to try and find a franchise QB. As I care nothing for the Broncos that will be just fine with me. At that six year mark, his legs and body will start showing the wear and tear and his game won't be anywhere near as effective as it is now with fresh legs. However, don't get too excited Tebow and Bronco fans, there is every bit as good a chance that midway thru next season, he is benched when defensive coordinators have a larger body of work to game plane for. 50/50 as it stands now.

I'm a Giant fan, so Sunday was a good day for me. But I have to be honest; I think watching the Broncos win was more exciting. I don't know what it is about Tebow, but I'm pulling for him. I'm a Catholic, but not really practicing, so don't think this is about God. I just like the guy; he is genuine. After the game he spoke about spending time with a girl who has had more than 70 surgeries. He said the win was great, but he was more excited about being able to share it with this girl. I know a lot of pros to charity work, but I think this is just the type of guy Tebow is. I'm pulling for him and the Broncos. IT'S TEBOW TIME!!!!!!!!!!!
