U.S. Coast Guard Rescues Iran Mariners

(Adds details)

WASHINGTON, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Another six Iranian mariners have been rescued by American forces, this time in waters off Iraq, the Pentagon said on Tuesday, just days after announcing that a U.S. warship had freed 13 Iranian fishermen kidnapped by pirates.

The successive rescue operations have taken place at a moment of heightened tension between the two countries over Iran's nuclear program, which the West suspects is aimed at building an atomic bomb. Iran threatened last month to shut off the Strait of Hormuz - the world's most important oil shipping lane - if new U.S. and EU sanctions halted its oil exports.

The Pentagon said a U.S. Coast Guard cutter led the latest rescue mission, responding to a distress call about 50 miles (90 km) southeast of the Iraqi port city of Umm Qaser. The Iranians said their ship had been taking on water.

The Navy issued a statement quoting the owner of the Iranian ship saying: "Without your help, we were dead. Thank you for all you did for us."

The six Iranians were given water, food and blankets and one was treated for minor injuries. They were then transferred on inflatable boats from the Coast Guard vessel to an Iranian coast guard ship.

The captain of the Iranian vessel was quoted by the Navy thanking the Americans for aiding the Iranian sailors.

Last Thursday, U.S. naval forces in the northern Arabian Sea rescued 13 Iranian fisherman who were held hostages by pirates for more than a month, sending them home with food and fuel and wearing baseball caps bearing the name of the U.S. warship that freed them.

Those naval forces belonged to the USS John C. Stennis aircraft carrier strike group, which had been the target of earlier threats from Iran's military not to return to the Gulf after departing in December. (Reporting By Phil Stewart; Editing by Eric Beech and Paul Simao)

I am sure they will all be killed when Israel and Aipac force us to attack Iran. Now that's IRONY!

Can we put them up on a mock trial and then give them the death sentence. Hey that is what Iran does when they help people. Maybe we should hold these "SPY's" and send them back in a prisoner exchange. Realistically I would not sink to their level, but I winder what Iran would do if 6 Americans needed help. Funny how things work?

Probably helping the Iraqis. We might not have troops there, but they are going to need help expanding their capabilities for years.

It is beginning to sound like the universe is saying . . "Hey guys peace and dialogue -- not more stupid destructive and needless wars -- we are all human beings"

I hope the State Dept and Obama listen and start engaging in dialogue with Iran and not more sanctions against the Iranian people

He has dual nationality.
If he had been tried and convicted in the US on the same charges, would you still be calling him "our guy"?

Unfortunately, for every encouraging story, there is another that takes everything back to square one:

Empathy. You were trained to kill, so I can understand having blocked out or eradicated most of that capability in regards to cultures we're at war with. Their ship was sinking, they put out a distress call, and we helped them out. We would have caught more flak for not helping them than we will for lending a hand. There's also a chance we can use the gesture as a catalyst to diffuse the current tensions. You don't think we should go to war with Iran, do you? Or do you just see it as inevitable?
10:22 AM on 01/11/2012
Unfortunatley Jeff, that won't be an incident to diffuse the tensions as those who are pushing fo the next w*rs, have been trying 24/7 for tensions to increase and not be diffused. Iranians and Americans meet each other in sports venues regularly also and shake hands too.

I salute you for being a decent person Jeff.

For some other readers who dont know,

Iran, per IAEA (despite the latest Amano-ized report which tried to support the very small pro-w*r crowd but didn't offer anything new or different from previous IAEA reports) and per the N I E reports, is not developing or going in that direction (the lies for supporting US to start another very foolish w&r), and also per the published and announced USA gov. reports even if they were to try to enrich ura. beyond 20%/medical (going towrads a we*pons-grade, everyone would know about it at least by one year in advance, for they have to kick out the inspectors first for the purpose of trying to conceal their intentions and activities first.

And we have those who think they are very patriotic but by not trying to find out whats really going on, they don't know how they are hurting the country (United Sates) that they care for and support. A wake up call, we are only $14 trillion in the red. Ever heard of the saying that empires implode from within and by themselves?

Well. If the United States capitualtes and moves the 5th fleet out of the Arabian Sea, who in the heck is going to rescue all them that Iranian Mariners? Iran won't do it. They are too busy trying to find foreigners to pin bum charges on in order to reflect the problems that the all mighty president of Iran conjures up.

Actually, many other navies are part of the international task force operating against Somali pirates. Iran has saved several vessels of various flags too.

The following article provides links to details of several rescues, illustrating just how international the problem is:

The U.S.Coast Guard rescuing Iranian mariners is another fine example of American exceptionalism.

One of Alexis de Toqueville's original arguments for American exceptionalism still stands; America remains particularly attractive to immigrants because of its perceived economic and political opportunities. Since its founding, many immigrants, such as Alexander Hamilton, Albert Gallatin, James J Hill, John Jacob Astor, Andrew Carnegie, Charlie Chaplin, Samuel Goldwyn, Bob Hope, Saul Bellow, Henry Kissinger, Madeleine Albright and Arnold Schwarzenegger have risen to the top in business, media and politics, not to mention the success of the children of immigrants, such as Colin Powell and Barack Obama. The "American Dream" describes the perceived abundance of opportunities in the American system.

The United States has the largest population of immigrants in the world—over 38.5 million people living in the United States are first-generation immigrants, although on a percentage basis the immigrant population ranks 48th in the world.
06:51 AM on 01/11/2012
Maybe we should be highlighting all the immigration failures then. Ok, sarcasm aside, at least here we do have more freedoms than most countries. From your post I get the impression you don't think America is a great spot for immigrants. Where else then?
09:19 AM on 01/11/2012
Yes! I totally agree! Immigrants who have embraced America's standards have made our county great!

Yep, they must REALLY be imagining things...

That would be wonderful if Iran could rise above the fray and Free the Marine or others who are jailed unjustly.

US Coast Guard doesn't do those things
11:53 PM on 01/11/2012
they do and they don't, port security units will, and all boardings done by the navy require a cg officer
