Bald Barbie: Mattel Under Pressure To Mass Produce Doll For Cancer Sufferers

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 01/11/12 11:48 AM ET Updated: 01/12/12 10:59 AM ET

Bald Barbie Movement

Barbie maker Mattel is coming under growing pressure to mass produce a bald barbie doll for girls who suffer from hair loss, Digital Journal reports.

Last year, Mattel created a one-of-a-kind bald Barbie doll for a 4-year-old suffering from cancer who lost her hair during chemotherapy treatment, according to CBS New York.

Now, some want Mattel to make bald Barbies available to all their customers.

So far, a Facebook campaign has already generated more than 11,000 likes calling for a bald Barbie doll which they say will help boost the self esteem in women and children experiencing hair loss from cancer treatment, pulling one's hair out and other diseases that cause the immune system to attack hair follicles.

On their Facebook page, campaign organizers wrote the following explanation of their goals and the reasons behind the movement:

We would like to see a Beautiful and Bald Barbie made to help young girls who suffer from hair loss due to cancer treatments, Alopecia or Trichotillomania . Also, for young girls who are having trouble coping with their mother's hair loss from chemo. Many children have some difficulty accepting their mother, sister, aunt, grandparent or friend going from a long haired to a bald.

According to the Amarillo Globe-News, the movement is also asking Mattel to create headscarves and hats for the bald dolls.

A petition has also been started on Change.org lobbying for the manufacture of the hairless dolls. As of Wednesday, Jan. 11, the petition had garnered 817 signatures.

Tracey Kidd, whose daughter is suffering from cancer, told the Sunday Mail that she agreed with the campaign.

"There's so much emphasis, especially on little girls, on their hair and how they (cancer kids) look," Kidd told the paper. "It's important for them to feel good, especially in hospital."

Still, not everyone agrees with the idea of a mass-produced bald Barbie.

One Chicago blogger who writes under the name Mary Tyler Mom, argues that focusing on something like toys fails to address the real needs of cancer sufferers.

Girls with cancer need a bald doll about as much as women with breast cancer need a pink Kitchen Aid mixer...You know what girls with cancer need? They need money. They need lots and lots and oodles and oodles of dollars for the researchers working on their behalf.

If Mattel agrees to make the bald Barbie, campaigners have said they hope the company will donate at least some of the proceeds to Saint Jude's Children's Hospital, a nonprofit pediatric cancer research center in Memphis, Tennessee.

i am sorry maryanna to disagree; yes barbie is nothing like real women.
but that should not be a reason y sick girls can't also have something even small to remind them once a while that they are pretty even if they r bald, they r survivors, and they look pretty despite all!!!

I don't care whether they make a hairless doll or not; it's none of my business. If people really think it will give self-esteem to sick girls, go for it. But the fact remains that, even bald, Barbie still doesn't look like a real woman. Even my brown haired doll (Skipper?) never looked like me. She didn't give me "self confidence" by being able to drive around in her Malibu Convertible or whatever. A thin, gorgeous doll wearing perfect make-up with a flawless complexion won't be representative of a woman with cancer just because she doesn't have hair.

Will they make an obese one? One with glasses? An amputee? One who had acid thrown on her face for not marrying her arranged husband?

I'm totally with the Mary Tyler Mom on this one.

I am surprised how many adults don't realise that a child will give a doll a name that represents someone they know. For example this is aunt so & so and she has no hair or sister Becky she wears a scarf - you get the idea , so why are we worrying about if it should be collector or playline edition. Stop looking at it from an adult point of view and see it as a way for a child going through a traumatic or scary situation to put it into perspective. Anything that can help a child cope is a good thing. NO KARDASHIAN anything what a waste of space that would be. But by all means a Bald Barbie that may help a child relate and understand this terrible situation some may have to face.

I think that Making this barbie for all to buy is an AMAZING IDEA! There are more young kids out there fighting the battle of cancer then people know. Making this barbie will not only help spread awareness to young kids but will also show them that its okay to be bald and be around someone that is bald. It makes them no different then the next kid. Making this doll i think would really be inspiring. I do also think now if they dont make this doll and all the kids old enough to understand see that they didnt make the doll, it may make them feel even more down. What do they have to loose making this barbie...NOTHING! I think it will be one big hit. I dont think it should be a very spendy doll, same as all the others so people will buy it. I know that as soon as i hear this doll comes out i will be buying more then one for my kids and family members! MATTEL, THINK ABOUT HOW MUCH THIS WOULD MEAN TO THESE KIDS...THEY HAVE BEEN THROUGH SO MUCH...THEY DESERVE THIS!!!!

What they really need to do is make a Ken doll that is suffering from ED
or at least give him the parts

(for the record I am all for the bald Barbie)

I can't believe there are any negative comments on this article. It wouldn't hurt anything by making this doll. It would be a GREAT way for these girls to see that long, flowing hair isn't the only kind of beautiful and might make them feel more normal. I think it's a very sweet idea.

it shows what type of society we live in that just the thought of making a bald doll is seen as wrong. its a very sad world we live in :o( I hope they make it also

If I support this idea of a Bald Barbie, in order to make Girls without Hair Feel Better About Themselves... THEN;
They should make Barbie's with Big Butts and some with Small Boobs, and at least THREE different Barbies for Overweight Girls.
Can we also have Crack Addict Barbie So Young Females will Have Some type of Good Role Model to Hold onto while going through Withdrawal?
And Last BUT Not LEAST... An Un-Wed Pregnant Teenage Barbie so those Girls can also Feel Good About Themselves.
If the scientists at Mattel can work this out... Maybe one day in the near future, they can make Congress Dolls that will Represent the Citizens of the United States and themselves!

Comparing diseases, that these girls do not chose to get, to premarital sex, drug abuse, and obesity is outlandish.

So who's paying for all the psychics?
06:14 PM on 01/15/2012
Technically you don't choose to have small boobs or a big butt either.
04:34 PM on 01/17/2012
I dont totally agree with this. Kids fighting with cancer DID NOT choose to be like this. Overweight people CAN loose weight. People that are crack heads, THIS IS THIER CHOICE. Young girls who get pregnant HAD THAT CHOICE. but if you look at it KIDS WITH CANCER DID NOT CHOOSE THIS FOR THEMSELF. IT IS NOTHING THEY CAN CONTROL!

Crack babies are not that way by choice. Obesity is a nation wide problem. The solution is't just tell kids to simply stop eating. Look at the opposition the first lady gets for trying to make kids more health conscious.
That being said I feel it's a good idea so girls can be more comfortable with their situation.

I have a daughter who suffers from an auto immune disease which caused her to lose all her hair at the age of 8. Having belonged to a support group I know there are a lot of other little girls with the same problem. So not only would it help the young cancer patients it would also cover a lot of other little girls with other various ailments.

Clicking the "Like" button on a Facebook page may create some awareness, but "donating" will make a difference. Yes/No?

As a breast cancer survivor I thought the bald Barbie would be a cool way to raise research money, but when I found out Mattel is making KardashianBarbie I was a bit angry. To promote self-centered, selfish plastic-filled humans who would be average people without their luxurious lifestyle if not for their deceased father shows it IS all about the money. Thank goodness some of that money goes to Mattel's children's hospital.
