EPA Maps Largest Sources Of Carbon Emissions

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

First Posted: 01/11/12 04:20 PM ET Updated: 01/11/12 04:20 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- A new carbon emissions database launched by the Environmental Protection Agency maps out the biggest stationary sources of carbon pollution nationwide. Users can zoom out to see what regions of the country are hardest-hit, or zoom in to identify the worst pollution offenders in their area.

The data, which is organized into categories including power plants, refineries, chemicals, landfills, metals and minerals, reveal power plants to be the largest stationary sources of pollution, emitting 2,324 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, followed by petroleum at 183 mmtCO2e.

Collected from 6,700 facilities and suppliers during calendar year 2010, the map represents an estimated 80 percent of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Breakdowns are available by industry and state, but cannot be filtered by corporation.

"The GHG Reporting Program data provides a critical tool for businesses and other innovators to find cost- and fuel-saving efficiencies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and foster technologies to protect public health and the environment," said Gina McCarthy, assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation.

The data is currently being updated and an additional 12 source categories will be available for 2011 figures. View the EPA's new interactive map here.

Many articles about this are very misleading, failing to state up front (or not at all) that major sources such as for agriculture and transport are not included in this.

Agricultural meat production is a bigger greenhouse gas emitter than power generation.

I don't think so.
"Producing the annual beef diet of the average American emits as much greenhouse gas as a car driven more than 1,800 miles." http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=the-greenhouse-hamburger

If you have a link....?

Hey, if you don't like power plants emitting co2, then stop using electricity. Right now.

Hypocrites.

stationary sources ? how about moving sources like autos ?

Good. First map 'em. Then tax 'em. Then invest the money in clean energy.

Gee, and the coal companies and frackers have all these nice ads assuring us about how environmentally aware and responsible they are. You mean that's all a pack of lies? Why am I not surprised? Now if we can just do something with the information to make these people stop pumping their trash into our air.

The Southern Company has three of the top coal plant CO2 emmiters, with number one in Georgia, which also has the greatest disparity of income between the rich and the poor.
A spokesperson for the Southern Company, Ms. Williams, stated that CO2 is not a pollutunt, we all exale it. As long as we have corporations and states refusing to take responsibility for CO2 emissions, we will continue to see them confusing the public for corporate and personal gain.

Good Lord. Did our tax dollars fund this nonsense?

Sure!

it probably would be equivalent to about 15 seconds of the war in Afghanistan.

Some people have trouble with facts if the facts don't support their opinion. Be kind, though. His squeak soon will be drowned out by the snide harrumphs of Republican congressmen and the outraged screams from companies responsible for the pollution and don't want people to know the truth because they may have to cleanup after themselves for once, but I doubt it. The polluters own our government, and will do so until we can get money out of politics -- IF we can get money out of politics.

Our air quality monitors in Pittsburg ,NH have been shut down and they are gassing us to death because corporations want to frack our marcellus shale. The state of NH under corporatist John Lynch , governor, has been under siege for corporate geed. Northern Pass; the foreign project by corporate rule refuses to cease its unlawful assault on our rights, our environment and our lives.

Greenhouse gasses added to atmosphere are increasing every year, in a short time the life on Earth will become unsupportable. I think mankind should think seriously pursuing new clean and dense sources of energy to assure our existence as specie in this world. http://www.crossfirefusion.com/nuclear-fusion-reactor/overview.html

Agreed on the problem, but not the solution.

Fusion is a long ways away.

Rooftop solar, offshore wind waste bio char and efficiency are here now. and cheaper than nukes.
