Cop Punches Woman: Bus Passenger Tapes LA Sheriff's Deputy Hitting Rider (SHOCKING VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/11/12 02:12 PM ET Updated: 01/11/12 02:30 PM ET

A passenger on a bus recorded a Los Angeles cop punching a woman in the face who apparently hadn't been violent while the camera rolled.

Jermaine Green, the man who taped the Monday night incident in Bellflower, told NBC LA that the Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy who struck the woman threatened to arrest him if he didn't hand over his camera phone.

The woman brought a stroller laden with pillows on to the bus and Green described her as having "special needs." Two deputies allegedly boarded the bus at the next stop and confronted the lady, who began cursing at them, according to Green's retelling.

His video begins with the woman standing in the aisle and cursing repeatedly. One of the deputies, a woman, grabs her arm.

The audio is unclear, but the woman appears to try to walk past the deputies. The male deputy, who had been holding her wrists, cocks his right arm and throws a right-handed punch that knocks the woman off balance.

The arguing continues as the woman is restrained on a seat. The tape cuts out after more deputies board the bus.

A spokesman for the sheriff's office told LA Weekly that the police accosted the woman, because they'd received a report that said she "almost attacked an elderly man."

The woman, whose name was not given, has previous arrests, including charges of assaulting a police officer, the spokesman said. He added she had acted aggressively towards the deputies.

The spokesman's statement said the woman had "mental challenges."

Officials from Internal Affairs and the Office of Independent Review will investigate, LA Weekly reports.

I think she's in worse shape now that she's a celebrity. If you watch footage of her these people claim they are childhood friends have claimed that they will 'help' and care for her. The good ol' crawl out of the woodwork 'childhood friends' that smell a law suit. Yikes!

So my comment gets deleted.. guess I'll have to write it again. COPS ARE PIGS! That is my opinion and there is no reason why it should have gotten deleted in the first place just because some moderator doesn't agree with my opinion.

As a 30 plus year police officer, the officer on the tape lost control of his emotions. Stress has an impact on all human beings. Uniformed or not. No excuses for taking out ones frustration on anyone.

This will have to be my last post here..the debating has been interesting and fun..I just have some serious things to deal with right now..but I want to say..thank you to all our dedicated, honorable, courageous, brave, and good Law enforcement out there dedicated to helping people..all people including the mentally ill. It takes a special kind of person to take on what they do out there..it also takes a special kind of person out there to live the life mentally ill in todays world..in that regard we are all human. Please enjoy your life it is too short to spend here fighting.

The cops are crazier than the woman. wHAT A PIECE OF WORK THAT COP IS. bEST PART IS, i GUARANTEE HE'LL KEEP HIS JOB. dISGUSTING.

She seems schizophrenic, aggressive and scary to me. I can see why he slugged her. Big deal. She shouldn't be out and about hollering in public. Thank you Ronald Reagan for shutting off federal funding for mental institutions so sick people can wander the streets.

Are you a psychiatrist? I certainly hope not.

The only reason she has any other charges. Is because as you can see in the video. They cops are actually afraid of her. With fear comes weakness. Thats what these cops are. Weak. With fear comes prejudice. With fear comes anger. You would everyone would have learned something from George Lucas over the years. Its all true. Two cops afraid of one woman. Sad. How does she get in trouble for "almost attacked an elderly man". What is minority report a real situation now.
11:33 AM on 01/16/2012
Thank you for saying that! There is so much truth in that..there was no reason to be afraid of her. If she would have been waving a weapon that would be different. But they really didn't even have a good reason to hold her arms and hit her. I just don't see that in my mind to be right at all. I am mentally ill as I have said many times on here..but if I was this woman..I would have only got more mad..these officers on here they don't get it. They aren't willing to learn from anyone.
11:38 AM on 01/16/2012
Sorry..I didn't get to finish that..my work called an sent it before I could finish...ok..you know I keep getting asked what would I do to get her off the bus..and I. Don't exactly answer it because it wouldn't matter..if I said it then its not like they would use it to help others..they would only use it in bad ways against us. So it is no use.

This is another classic case of cops abusing their power, it doesn't matter if your White, Black, Brown, purple or green these people will beat you at the drop of a dime.
09:16 AM on 01/16/2012
Nah..all it takes is to be disadvantaged in some way or another. I agree. They don't pick on someone that can takem.

I'd like to know why there people making posts that are vulgar and obnoxious that are allowed to stay or be posted, but when someone makes a post that is decent and makes sense, it is overlooked and not posted at all? Is there a moderator running this thing or what? Talk about being partial!
03:34 PM on 01/15/2012
sure you'll post that..hahahaha!

The cops could have arrested her without throwing any punches. She was removed from the bus with the help of additional officers and this could have been done minus the one punch. I hope that cop gets some kind of reprimand for hitting the woman. They do not have a right to physically abuse suspects.
05:29 PM on 01/15/2012
Well this is true, I don't agree with hitting or restraining someone at all Redv14, and I know they wanted her off the bus, but they wasn't going to be able to carry her. And I gotta be clear about something, can a person actually get arrested for yelling at a cop? I mean if that is all she was doing really was yelling, then why did she have to go anywhere at all?

In case you haven't figured this out, let me give you some advice: Don't yell at a cop, or you'll end up in the paddy wagon.

Depending on what's being yelled and where you're at, the yelling often falls under the rubric of Disorderly Conduct. Usually it depends if a citizen on the scene is offended or intimidated by the behavior, and these days there's always somebody around that's offended or intimidated/scared.
09:05 AM on 01/15/2012
We see a brief part of a more elaborate play. But what we see is, without question, police abuse of power. To punch, elbow or otherwise assault any citizen is beyond the pervue of police authority. They could have pressed her into the seat, made some calming comments and resolved the situation, even if it required removal, with less violence. The saying is "Give a man a badge..." This is a fine example of that. Threatening is words, Assault is violent action. It was the police who were violent, even though the lady's conversation in the tape was less that acceptable. The behavior of the police is dispicable and unacceptable. This was not Protection, it was abuse of power. It could and should have been handled in a less violent manner.
Ask one question - What if you were the victim in this video

Very good question.

It's also against the law to assault a police officer, which this specific person was convicted of doing FOUR TIMES.

Ask yourself how you would quickly remove this huge unstable aggressive person from a crowded bus. Mace? Taser?

Please ensure these videos are immediately exported to a secure third party for distribution. If the cell phone is confiscated, it will be destroyed and the actual facts will be disputed by law enforcement. The only reason any of these incidents are investigated is they are broadcast on Youtube, news stations, etc., leaving law enforcement no choice in the matter.

I um..apparently offended a particular family member of mine whom has apparently been um..watching me on here. This is so not cool! I have been asked to apologize. He seems to feel that I have overstepped and gotten too big for my britches. And that both my aptitude and fearlessness will get the best of me one day and I better tone it down. He is asking me to understand that LE does have my best interest at heart and just because this happened to her doesn't mean it will to me and thinks I got the two confused..so I am sorry to whomever in LE that I offended or bothered with my point of views. He realizes my aptitude is high however I am better off putting it to use positively not negatively. There! Thanks Dad..seriously?
10:27 PM on 01/14/2012
You would have to understand my dad. He knows if I don't respect anyone else in this world I will respect him. He also knows I won't see when I am getting ahead of myself. He felt I was. Personally I thought I had some pretty good points and pretty valid reasons to back it up...those things don't exactly matter to him. I am no child but out of habit he was once again hanging over my shoulder and has not a problem in this world refocusing my attention which needs to be done. I can live with it I suppose. He was also worried a board like this can trigger some problems. It is his way of protecting me..so be it. I truly believe he will do this until I am 60+yrs old. Yay me. I could get angry..or just consider myself blessed..I walk away embarassed..but I know I am blessed. I will still do all I can to help mentally ill people through CIT and other two programs..they need all the support they can get. He agreed with my views..just not with the last couple comments.

Hi Campbellhn, just quickly I wanted to say I've enjoyed reading your posts. You're insightful & caring. It's good to speak out where we can affect change but It's also good to have family the looks after your best interest. I'll get back to you on those questions you asked me in 1-2 days when I have more time.

Coulda's, shoulda's, woulda's..almost..doesn't cut it! This war vet will now stand up in court on behalf of the abuse he saw towards a mentally ill individual..and his creds will go farther than that LE badge will. Respect is earned. I hope her attorney will also investigate the legitimacy into those past charges as well. Personally I don't feel all LE is bad and will agree there are some really good compassionate highly intelligent honest officers out there..but this guy wasn't one of them. And there are many more just like him. I will be keeping an eye on this story and how it is dealt with..it will be very interesting to see whether the state takes this seriously or not.

the good police stand behind the blue wall just like the bullies...so they get to be lumped in with the thugs in this video. Nothing will come of this except that the Dept will say all procedures and protocols have been followed. Of course, the person who recorded the incident will be harassed by local LE. Am I a cynic? yes. Is this what will happen? yes.
