Monica Hussing And William Robinson Sr., Ohio Parents Admit Denying Ailing Son Medical Care

THOMAS J. SHEERAN   01/11/12 05:36 PM ET   AP

CLEVELAND — The parents of an 8-year-old boy who died from Hodgkin lymphoma after suffering for months from undiagnosed swollen glands have pleaded guilty to denying him medical treatment.

Monica Hussing, 37, and William Robinson Sr., 40, both of Cleveland, face up to eight years in prison at sentencing. They pleaded guilty Monday to attempted involuntary manslaughter in a last-minute plea deal before their trial was about to begin.

Willie Robinson collapsed at his home on March 22, 2008. Prosecutors say he had begged his parents to take him to see a doctor but was rejected. Hodgkin lymphoma is a highly treatable cancer.

Hussing's attorney, John Luskin, said his client took responsibility in the case but, given her education and background, didn't realize the boy was seriously ill and was treating him with cold medication.

"She is a mother that just did not have the capability to recognize" cancer, Luskin said Wednesday.

Robinson's lawyer, Thomas Rein, called it a "sad, horrific case" that drew him inquiries from the White House as changes to federal health care law were being considered in 2009.

"Had he had regular health coverage, it possibly could have prevented this," Rein said of the boy's death.

Luskin and Rein said the parents had financial problems and tried to get checkups for their children but couldn't afford it.

"The kid had what appeared to be swollen glands," Luskin said. "This was not a tumor that was getting bigger. It would come and go. He would have his good days, he would have his bad days."

Hussing's daughter, Lillian Hussing, said the family didn't have money for medical care when they lived in Warren, tried repeatedly to get help from social services and visited a free clinic but left when told they would have to pay $180.

"We did not know it was cancer," she said. "We tried and tried to get help and were denied every time," said the daughter, who's 18.

The family soon moved to Cleveland and the boy died within weeks.

Prosecutors say that while the boy was suffering, the parents claimed financial hardship but paid $87 to have a pit bull treated for fleas. Luskin said the dog belonged to Hussing's parents and her parents paid for the treatment.

Trumbull County Children Services says it had worked with the family to provide Willie health care, getting involved after receiving a phone call in July 2007. Agency officials said a case worker visited the family at least monthly and pushed the parents to have a medical follow-up on his swollen neck but they didn't.

However, Rein said a social worker who visited the family in January 2008 "indicated the kids were healthy and happy." He said no one knew the boy had cancer until he died and an autopsy was performed.

And Lillian Hussing said a case worker had told the family the boy's lump looked like a swollen gland and to hold off until they could secure financial assistance before getting it checked.

About two weeks after they moved to Cleveland, she said, her brother came down with something. Her mother treated him with cold medicine and he died within three days.

She said the boy never complained about his neck.

"He played, he went outside, he wrestled, he played video games," the boy's sister said. "He was the happiest kid you could imagine. It never seemed like he was suffering."

The emotional aftermath from their son's death led the couple to split, according to Luskin.

The couple's four other children under 18 were placed in the custody of a family member. Luskin said the daughter, upon turning 18, decided to return to live with her mother.

Rein said Robinson agreed to plead guilty so his children could be spared any further grief and wouldn't have to suffer by testifying. Lillian Hussing said her mother took a plea bargain because of the uncertainty of a trial and fear she could be sent to prison for a long time.

As part of the deal, the prosecution agreed to drop four counts each against each parent, including child endangering. Prosecutors didn't agree to a sentence recommendation. Both Luskin and Rein said they hope the judge will consider probation.

"There's not a day my client ... starts without shedding a tear for his son," Rein said.

The coroner ruled that the boy was a victim of medical neglect and died from pneumonia due to Hodgkin lymphoma.

Hodgkin lymphoma is a highly treatable cancer, with as many as 95 percent of patients in early stages of the disease surviving for five years or more with treatment. It's one of the most common forms of cancers among children.

Dr. Stanton L. Gerson, director of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center at Case Western Reserve University, said parents should watch for glands that are swollen for more than two or three weeks, particularly if accompanied by weight loss and nighttime fevers.

This is ridiculous to prosecute these parents. Hodgkins lymphoma is *not* an obvious disease. I know. My dh came down with pneumonia which prompted a chest x-ray or he would have died. We found out he had stage IV Hodgkins lymphoma! He had had a complete physical, a scope of his kidney and bladder and a CT scan of his abdomen in the 5 months before being diagnosed and nothing had shown up! This is crazy.

Welcome to the American medical system. This is a tragedy that would not have happened in any other developed country. If you feel the need to place the ulitmate blame at anyones feet it should be at those that have done their best to prevent comprehensive care as a right of the citizens of the richest nation on the planet.

Actually, it very easily could have happened in a developing country. But the parents would not have been prosecuted. This is so wrong. This is a travesty.

Very sad, but I think the parents should not be prosecuted. The child did not seem very ill. It was March, so he had been in school since September. The teachers would have intervened if he seemed ill. Schools call parents to pick up children for the most minor of illnesses. Child Services was also involved, and they have the power to remove a sick child to obtain medical treatment. If no one else saw a need for immediate medical care, it is wrong to prosecute the parents.

I am horrified by this story!

In Canada, we have a medical system available to people at any level of income.

I am appalled that parents who tried to get medical treatment but could not pay for it are charged with criminal activity. This is twisted and wrong. The family has lost a precious child, even though they tried to get medical treatment, and now must continue to suffer from criminal prosecution.

Without means to pay for treatment, what other alternatives did the family have? Did they refuse available treatment that did not require a cash payment up front? No. Had free medical care been available to this family and they did not bother to seek it or refused to receive it, then government has the right to charge the family with negligence. However, these parents tried to get medical help. They are NOT idiots - they are just too poor to meet the profit demands of American medical business owners.

Your elected representatives legislate low taxes for rich individuals and corporations and then refuse to pay for medical services for poor and starving families because they are short of tax dollars. They are the real culprits, villains and criminals, and it is they who fairly should be charged with medical negligence, not parents who tried to get medical help for what they thought was a minor medical problem but had to leave because they did not have enough cash!

Read the article. They changed their story (they also said they thought he had a month-long cold), so they aren't exactly credible. Also, they claimed their parents paid for an $87 flea treatment for the dog. If that's the case, why (if they're innocent) would they not have asked the grandparents for help? I should also add that penalties for child neglect don't apply when the parents are willing but unable to provide care.

It was the grandparent dog and they paid for the flea treatment. It is easy to wonder why the grandparents had not been asked to help but maybe they are equally poor.

With that said, I agree with you that it is horrifying that we in the states lack universal healthcare.

Unfortunately, there will be more stories like this unless health care is affordable to everyone. If GOP gets in, it's going to be alot worse. Tea Party GOP would argue, " it's not lack of affordable health care that's the problem, it's a lack of good judgement".

How many people and children in the US have to die every day because they do not have health insurance. I didn't and I was sick. I only received help when they had to cut out half my colon and 22 lymph nodes. Keep believing no other country on this earth has as good of health care as we do. The high rate of Staph infection in US hospitals just happens. Right. I wasn't given a bed bath and the aides didn't change my pad when I urinated on it. That was at Stanford Hospital. The woman next to me had a stroke. I'm the one that had to help her to the bathroom because no one else would come when she kept calling for help. I remember the sobbing at night from other patients. I remember hearing code blue being called over and over at night and then hearing this code blue is no longer needed. One day you'll be in the hospital and I hope you enjoy every minute of it. And if you don't have health insurance God Bless You for then you will know first hand how hard it will be for you to get any help at all. Poverty is a crime in the USA punishable by imprisonment. The daughter said “We tried and tried to get help and were denied every time.” Yes I understand because I have been there FIRST HAND.

Also, Hussing and Robinson previously admitted in court they had not provided any of their SIX children with medical treatment for three years prior to Willie’s death.

The couple was first indicted in March of 2009. At that time, prosecutors said that while Willie was suffering from cancer, instead of paying for his treatment, his parents paid to have their pit bull treated for fleas.

So, they say couldn't afford $180 to take their seriously ill 8-year-old to the doctor, even after he begged them himself, BUT they had enough money to move house? I wonder if they also had enough money for things like cable TV, internet, cell phones, cigarettes, and the like.

As a mom, I just don't understand how you wouldn't beg, borrow, or even steal to get your young and obviously VERY sick child some sort of medical treatment before they died of freakin' CANCER!

I don't get it, a FREE clinic had a 180.00 fee? How is that a free clinic. And don't hospitals have funds for those who can not afford it? I know a hospital in the area less than an hour from our county that specializes in childrens care that has services and a fund to help people just like this ( I live in Trumbull co,) If they tried to get him help there, they would have been able to do so. I find it odd, the whole thing seems wrong.
04:27 PM on 01/11/2012
I agree about the hospital idea; hospitals cannot refuse treatment due to lack of money to pay-illegal Mexicans do it all the time. Why didn't they take this seriously? If he was sick for that long obviously it wasnt a cold-the length of time alone would signal to any mother that this was a serious problem. They are covering up their own shame and guilt-he could not have died from pnuemonia and cancer without suffering. do they really think people will swallow that crap and have sympathy for the parents? They dont deserve to hav esuch wonderful children if they are not going to care for them. It is appalling! Poor little guy-rest in peace son-your Father in heaven will take care of you now.

"She is a mother that just did not have the capability to recognize" cancer, Luskin said Wednesday.

The mother did not need the ability to recognize cancer. What she needed was to care enough about her child and her responsibility as a parent to take Willie to see doctors until he was properly diagnosed, and then follow up on the appropriate treatment of Willie.

Heck-not seeking treatment for your sick animal is against the law-it is child abuse to not treat a sick child. Shame on them-I feel no sympathy for the parents-they knew what they were donig-they can play dumb all they want. He was sick for three months-hello-wake up call!!
