Putting Feet Up On Subway Seats Is Costly In New York

Subway Seat

NEW YORK, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Lounging on the New York subway with feet up on the seats was costly to lazy riders fined by the city last year, police said on Tuesday.

More than 7,000 riders on New York City subways were ticketed last year for putting feet on the seats or otherwise taking up too much space, under a law that makes bad manners a crime.

The offenses, which ranged from putting a bag on a seat to blocking a door to stretching out for a nap, carry $50 fines, police said.

In all, 7,373 riders were issued tickets in 2011 for being unable to confine themselves to a single seat. The law making such behavior illegal was passed seven years ago.

While the crimes may seem benign, the New York Police Department said enforcement has made the subway safer.

It is not unusual for police to find someone they have stopped for poor subway etiquette has an outstanding arrest warrant, said police spokesman Paul Browne.

"One of the reasons that crime in the subways has plummeted from almost 50 felony crimes a day in 1990 to only seven now is because the NYPD enforces violations large and small," he said in an email.

Police often encounter "armed or wanted felons who were initially engaged in relatively minor offenses, like putting their feet up, smoking, walking or riding between cars, or fare beating," he said. (Reporting by Jonathan Allen; Editing by Ellen Wulfhorst and Greg McCune)

I support this one. Many of us are trying to keep our clothes clean, and just because a hooligan decide to put his/her paws up for no reason, now I have to be careful with the dirt. The bag thing is also a problem, people should never put their bags blocking a seat, we all pay the same fare and we all have the right to seat. Anyone who wants to use two seats should pay twice.

Can we do something about the crazy christians screaming at the top of their lungs at 7am about god coming? How about the homeless people defecating on the platform? Or the obese people that thinks they can really fit in that middle seat? Or the people picking their nose and then grabbing the poles? Or the people have a 5-course curry dinner during rush hour?

Please fine people who take up an entire pole on crowded trains by leaning on them instead of holding with their hand so that others can also hold on. I'm quick to just dig into a back and grab the pole. They get the hint.
08:20 AM on 01/12/2012
Don't touch the pole with your bare hands. That's my tip to you. Do you have any idea where previous pole-holder's hands have been? Use an elbow or a gloved hand in the winter.

Well said! For the most part they get the hint. Sometimes I have to say, "EXCUSE ME" - this is for holding, not leaning!

I always have a difficult time understanding how the NYPD works. They fine people for subway seats, yet murderers and rapists can just roam around. It seems the only thing the NYPD is good for fining people for ridiculous things.

Its really not that difficult to understand. Arresting actual criminals costs money. Fining the general public for bullshit is money in the bank. My friend got a ticket for being in a playground without a child. Apparently you cannot enter a playground in a public park unless you have a kid with you...

Maybe police should start foot patrols and seek out real criminals rather than making a cheap buck off of this... Want to curb bad manners?...how about ticketing themselves for initiating this kind of ticket blitz.

What about the big fat people who take up two seats?
03:00 PM on 01/11/2012
Ya know what, it's about god damn time. These people need to be ticketed. If they stationed cops on every train to go up and down ticketing, this country would be a better place financially. This is ridiculous and the discourteous behavior is contagious. People DO NOT give a $hit about anyone else on the train. This has become a very ME ME ME ME society. "MY bag gets a SEAT. I don't care if YOU need a seat." And between leaning on the pole, blocking the doors, eating fish/garlic/smelly food on the train...it's out of control; it's anarchy. I am PLEASED to see tickets being given out. In fact, I document EVERY TIME i see an act of this BS and post it to my blog, GoingWithEddie.com

Why not hand out slippers for all the taxes they charge in NYC.
03:18 PM on 01/11/2012
Slippers? Why? So people can put them on their feet before they put them up on the seat? Give me a break...YOU DON'T GET TWO SEATS. You're not better than anyone else. You're equal.

That's not what the law is about. It's about reprimanding those who abuse the privilege of riding on the MTA by purposely taking up more than one seat. As someone who rides the subway everyday, I see this all the time, people putting their bags and other items on the seat next to them so that nobody will sit next to them, or purposely speading their legs to take up two seats, or even lying down to take up 3-4 seats. I've lost count how many times I've witnessed arguments that stem from someone not wanting to give up an unoccupied seat.
02:57 PM on 01/11/2012
I am all for these fines, except when they happen at 4am on a Saturday. When I was fined for "occupying more than one seat" on the subway, I was on the F with ONE other person in the car. Come on! I was not bothering anyone. I was not causing anyone any kind of inconvenience. The officer said he was doing this "so that you don't get mugged". $50?!? I told him I had $12 in my pocket, mug me, please!

Also, there were SIX other officers in the subway station (Jay St) pulling people off the trains and writing tickets. At 4am. Give me a break. NEVER have I seen them fine people when the trains are actually busy.
03:22 PM on 01/11/2012
Well said Alex! It's ridiculous and only getting worse. People think they're more important than one another and they're not. We are all equal - that's what it boils down to. They need to take a lesson in common courtesy.

NYPD and MTA are money sucking vampires. Find more ridiculous reasons to put people on jail and fine them, but let the rapists and murderers roam free. golfclap.
