Violence In Syria: 400 Killed Over The Past 10 Days, U.N. Official Says

Monitors In Syria

By MICHAEL ASTOR   01/10/12 04:06 PM ET  AP

UNITED NATIONS -- An estimated 400 people have been killed in Syria since an Arab League mission arrived in the country to monitor the uprising against the government of President Bashar Assad, a top U.N. official said Tuesday.

United Nations political chief B. Lynn Pascoe provided the latest figures in a closed-door report to the 15-member Security Council on the Syrian uprising that has already claimed more than 5,000 lives since it began almost 10 months ago, diplomats said.

U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice said the rate of killings, an average of 40 a day, was even higher than before the monitors arrived.

"That is a clear indication that the government of Syria, rather than using the opportunity of its commitment to the Arab League to end the violence and fulfill all of its commitments under the protocol is instead stepping up the violence, despite the presence of monitors, and carrying out further acts of brutality against its population, even often in the presences of those monitors," Rice said, calling on Assad to step down and make way for a more democratic regime.

Syria's U.N. Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari blamed the killings on incitement by western powers.

"These victims are falling in Syria because of those who are still insisting on instigating and inciting violence. And I am sure you have heard a lot of these incitement calls from the same countries, from the same representatives who have just spoken to you," Ja'afari told reporters following comments by Rice and the ambassadors from Britain, France and Germany.

"Allow me to remind you that a couple of weeks ago, the spokesperson of the (U.S.) State Department advised the Syrian armed groups not to give up their weapons and not to engage in the nation dialogue," he added.

Western nations and the U.S. are demanding a resolution and threatening sanctions if the violence doesn't stop and condemning Assad's crackdown.

But Russia and China, which have closer ties to Assad's regime, believe extremist opponents of the government are equally responsible for the bloodshed and oppose any mention of sanctions.

On Tuesday, western diplomats accused Russia of stalling after introducing a draft resolution at the end of December that many here felt was insufficient.

"Unfortunately, after a bit of show last month of tabling a resolution, the Russians are inexplicably AWOL in terms of leading negotiations on the text of that resolution," Rice said.

Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin denied any stalling, saying his country was working on the draft resolution "all the time," but added "members of the council continue to remain rather far apart."

"One of the reasons we have not been throwing various texts around is that we have been following the progress of the Arab League monitoring mission and on the (January) 19th this is going to be another sort of milestone," Churkin said referring to the date the mission was due to issue its report. "But let me say, I think that patience may be the key word now."

Syria has ultimately become the divider of Mid-East among the Super Powers. Dividing Syria for the benefit of Israel is now a day dream.Syria may become Democratic but with more tough against Israel, so would Other Muslim Mid-East Countries against Israel. Would the West like to see The Mid-East slip in the hands of Russia and China. If not then hear for whom the bell tolls at the distance welcoming the Two Super Power only because of Israel and its demand.

The Arab League has, Chinese terms lost a lot of face, in their Syrian gambol. Its time to regroup and depart the scene and come up a new approach to the homicidal reign of Assad Jr.

Their best bet would be the Turks and their Nato affiliation to offer Assad a way out or provide him an offer he can't refuse.

War is the "Cash Cow" of political leaders and is now the biggest employer of the world. I can only say that I once read "A person can raise a few rats in a cage together as long as that cage is roomy, clean and there is enough food for all. The rats inside the cage will be happy and gentle. Allow those rats to over-breed to the point where their cage is filthy, and the food is scarce, then the rats become mean, nasty, diseased, afraid and will turn against one another and kill or maim". The same is true of any species and the human race has over-bred to the point that we are now mangling, warring and fearing one another. Limit the human population by some other method than killing please!

Until our leaders understand that "over population" will always result in WAR, poverty, despair, disease, hunger and mass production of humans who have no hope or future, then the human race will continue to wage war and people will continue to die. We can no longer continue to be a savage race of beings. As human beings, we must stand up and become what we were meant to be. Mass producing humans to over-run and over populate a planet that is shuddering on the brink of extinction is sheer madness.

Where is the pseudocourageous Barack Hussein Obama who was so adamantly concerned about violations of human rights in Egypt? Oh, thats right, the American wannabe "fearless" leader understands that the Syrians like the Iranians have very close ties with the Russians and the Chinese.

Thats what happens in Arab countries and perhaps they can fix that. but that does not mean that I am goiing to lay down and not scream when Obama uses things like this as the excuse for yet another war in the Middle East. Remember way back....oh five years ago when we were upset because President Bush, with the Dem Congress approval, went into Iraq...after six months of bipartisan discussion? That was seen as a horrible thing even though Saddam made threats against the US every day and did use nerve gas to kill 100,000 Kurds. Not enough. We went into Libya, spent $100 billion dollars, bombed a foreign country 24/7 for eight months without even mentioning to it Congress. Why? Well Moooomar might use his military (which Hillary gave him) to harm civilians. So we bombed them to smithereens to install a gov run by the Muslim Brotherhood, avowed to kill all Americans . Being a liberal must be like riding a rollercoaster, sometimes you are for things and sometimes you are violently against the same things.

Obama has threatened going into Syria? Hasn't the the GOP attacked Obama for not supporting the opposition in Syria and Iran? 5 years ago we went into Iraq? Actually it wasn't 6 months of bipartisan discussion, it was 6 months of preperation. Thgerer was little discussion as to going in in that even YOU pointed out dem supported. Gore, both Clintons and Kerry were on board from day 1. Without asking Congress on the bombing of Libya? 1) what did McCain and Graham say about Obama's right to do so? 2) by NEVER trying to pass a bill to stop any spending as to Libya, which the GOP House or Dem Senate could have done at any time Congress gave its approval. Remember that is how Vietnam basically ended, Congressional threat to Nixon that spending would be cut off which later was which put S Vietnam without it folded rightly or wrongly. NOT knowing history must be very hard. With reading and understanding YOU can overcome that issue.

To help Lebanon escape Hezbollah we have to get rid of Assad ... to have peace with Israel we have to get rid of Assad ...

to kick the Russians in the nuts (naval "base" in Syria) we have to get rid of Assad ...

to get rid of Iran's only helper in the region and supplier of a route for the weapons destined for Hezbollah we HAVE to get rid of Assad.

now... if we could push Turkey back over the Bosphorus to Asia-only since they have been jerks about letting NATO operate in the Black Sea ... and set up a base on the European side of the straight ... & set up a strong Kurdistan as an American "ally" in the region....

then this whole MESS might turn into something good

Nicely stated! As you detected from the insipid comments most of the commentators have little or no knowledge of that part of the world. Yet they rant about Obama's actions or inaction as they are somewhat conflicted.

yes, but hidden within the OBVIOUS stuff about Hezbollah was a much more "radical" and less discussed message :))

the Turkish restriction on NATO operations in the Black Sea - which has turned the Black Sea into a playground for the Russian fleet in Sevastopol (Crimea )...

This lack of defense of the Eastern flank of NATO's alliance allowed Russia to impose its will on Georgia with respects to Abkhazia - which, in turn threatens Georgian sovereignty.

And, Georgia is CRUCIAL to the supply of gas (Baku-Tbilisi) to Europe. This gives Russia a tremendous strategical position in dictating the flow of natural gas and can negotiate contracts 'at will' with the energy rich countries in the region.

The tragedy is that Turkey, though part of NATO, is (according to most surveys) MORE anti-USA than Iran or Saudi Arabia; additionally, due to its strategic position, it has been able to occupy another European country (Cyprus) and no one wants to force the issue.

The restrictions on the Bosphorus are putting NATO's eastern flank in a very weak strategic position.

Thus, we are

Please America for once mind our own business. No more of our children killed in wars that will never change things. As far as Syria goes let some other country go first and the same with Iran. We cannot be the police of the world.

Yes we did not police the world as to Osama and look what happened. Allowing Iran nukes would bring worse consequences. These are people that see us as infidels and devils wether we meddle in their business or not. That dying for Allah and 22 virgins is a believed philosphy by quite a few.

Just because the US has decided the country would benefit from a leader change does not mean they need to comply. Many countries have had their people *encouraged* to rebel by outsiders. Some governments fall and some don't.

Only one reason for the killing to increase while the monitors are there. The rebels are killing their own to make it appear that the government is doing it hoping that the monitors will act on their behalf. A strange new twist to "suicide" martyr's.

Right Assad has no history of killing and his father did none either. When the Arab league condemns somebody does it mean anything? The rebels are killing their own? Of course YOU sources for this? The Assad tanks and military are just shooting over the heads of the rebels?

Assad is killing them also but the rebels are making sure the monitors are going to see it happening. Assad is not going to be inclined to kill with the monitors there, he is going to portray it all as being overblown. I don't need sources as this comment area is for OPINIONS. If you do not like my opinion that is your right.
