The Best Tortilla Chips: How Do Tostitos Rate?

First Posted: 01/12/2012 2:38 pm   Updated: 08/31/2012 10:48 am

We often turn to tortilla chips as a vehicle to get dips from the bowl to our mouth. But have you ever stopped and wondered if the chips you choose are really the tastiest, the crunchiest, the most balanced in flavor? Guacamole is a prized creation, and so are fresh salsas; you certainly don't want to be muddying those crisp, bright flavors with a subpar chip.

Most of us turn to Tostitos for our tortilla chip needs, but we at Kitchen Daily needed to know: is that really the right choice? With the football playoffs in full swing it's time to get to the bottom of this chip query.

Our editors blind-tasted seven different brands of white corn tortilla chips. Some of them were spot on with a perfect balance of crispness and saltiness, and the others ... well, they were not quite as pleasant -- tasting of burnt popcorn, cardboard and even raw dough. So which tortilla chip should you turn to for your future dipping needs? Check out the slideshow to see which brands ranked the highest in our taste test.

How did your favorite tortilla chip rank? Let us know in the comments below.

As always, our taste tests are in no way influenced by or sponsored by the brands included.

If I were at a Mexican restaurant and served Tostitos chips and salsa, I would laugh and then leave. Now for parties, I get authentic chips from local markets, but then again, I live in Los Angeles, so I have more options for better quality food.

the best by far are the ones that begin with X and are sold at Whole foods also great are on the border thin tortilla chips. the rest taste like cardboard

Hog wash... None of those "Tortilla" chips are good... Those fake chips are nothing compared to REAL homemade chips. Tostitos? More like Grosstitos!

Santitas & Jaunitas- regional to the NW. Most regionally made chips will be better than national brands- and usually cost less.

Santitas makes the best chips, and they are about half the price of Tostitos.

Do you ever eat real Mexican food? On the Border is Stouffers-style restaurant food heated up in a microwave.

Don't any of you folks live in a community with real Mexicans? Our tostadas actually come from the local tortilla factory.

The best tortilla chips, like everything else are home made, Just get yourself a stone bowl, a stone pestle, some corn and wheat and go for it.

Mmmmm, genetically modified corn. It's been altered so that it produces its own insecticide. Your organs will hate you. Good luck with that!

Yep. Funny how non-GMO non-hydrogenated chips don't give you that queasy feeling after pigging out. (Unless they were consumed with a pound of velveeta and chili!)

It's true that Tostitos are good--very crispy and good taste. I recently tried Hanover as they were on sale--quite bland.
