South Carolina Primary: Next Stop, Foreclosureville

Foreclosures

First Posted: 01/12/12 12:01 AM ET Updated: 01/12/12 08:28 AM ET

The battle for the Republican presidential nomination has so far been waged in states relatively untouched by the Great Recession. Now it heads to three states with some of the country's highest rates of unemployment and foreclosures.

In South Carolina, where primary voters hit the polls on Jan. 21, unemployment's flying high at 9.9 percent. After that, elections will be in Florida, with a 10 percent unemployment rate, and Nevada, where it's 13 percent. The jobless rates in Iowa and New Hampshire are 5.7 percent and 5.2 percent, respectively.

Nevada leads the nation in both joblessness and foreclosures. One out of every 16 homes in the state was subject to some type of foreclosure filing in 2011, according to Irvine, Calif.-based RealtyTrac, an online marketplace and foreclosure data firm. It's the fifth consecutive year the Silver State has topped RealtyTrac's list. Florida's seventh, with filings on more than 2 percent of homes.

Frontrunner Mitt Romney hasn't pandered to struggling Nevada homeowners. He told the Las Vegas Review-Journal in October he supports the government stepping aside: "Don’t try to stop the foreclosure process. Let it run its course and hit the bottom."

It's not likely Romney will have much more to say on his next visit. The candidates didn't talk foreclosure policy in Iowa, even though the state attorney general is leading national foreclosure settlement negotiations with the country's biggest banks. Only Jon Huntsman, who didn't bother to campaign in the Iowa, has taken a position on the settlement.

While the candidates have spoken in broad terms about hard times and recovery, they've offered few specifics on unemployment policy.

Could that change in South Carolina? For the past year lawmakers there have pushed controversial reforms to the unemployment insurance system. State Republican lawmakers succeeded last year in reducing the duration of state-funded jobless aid from 26 to 20 weeks. Now they're pushing to require drug testing and to force the long-term jobless to perform part-time volunteer work.

The South Carolina state senators leading the effort said they don't expect the GOP primary to bring their cause extra national attention (though Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry have said in passing that they support drug testing the jobless, so maybe that proposal will get more scrutiny).

"The unemployment issues and that sort of thing haven't been anything anybody's talked about with any of the candidates that I'm aware of," state Sen. Kevin Bryant (R), a leading unemployment reformer, said in an interview. "I think for your average voter, that's probably too specific to campaign on."

The economy was already a top concern in New Hampshire, despite the state's relatively strong economy. Six out of 10 New Hampshire voters told exit pollsters the economy was their top concern, and 94 percent said they were worried about it.

I'm torn on this,  I'm all for the principle of trying to keep busy while your world is crumbling around you, And where the volunteer work involves directly helping others, rather than, say,  removing graffiti or painting sidewalks, I'm all for that too, because of the  Read More...

I think the GOP candidates are right about one thing: let states handle their own financial affairs. The red states would quickly be crushed, as they are the ones that get more back from the federal government than they put in--which actually proves that higher taxes create more wealth, because blue states are still doing better than places like South Carolina and Mississippi, with their "right-to-work" garbage. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/ezra-klein/2010/04/the_red_state_ripoff.html

Somebody could suggest to Mitt Romney to take up Arianna Huffington´s "Right-to-Rent" idea.
Would get him a load of votes. People should stick to good ideas....

This attempt by Republicans and the right wing to use this brand of stupidity and ignorance and ask this nation to go backwards, to repeat any lie that they can think of and repeat it as if it will become the truth, all of this racism, and insulting classes of people to depict them as less that they are and not worthy of consideration, This rhetoric and actions has their parallels is history, The racist days before civil rights, the Nazis in Germany, And the sentiments of people who after gaining power, tried to exterminate people out of existence. These people scare me, and I hope that they scare enough people that they never get into power,,

I don't know who you are, and don't know why you bring race in this economical problem. But I am sure you don't know anything about Hitler's Germany. You are just throwing words around very easily.
Government should stay out of banking and real estate business. The free market economy will take care of itself.

IF any. Well, like all the lefties, you are resentful of Mitt Romney; and you´ll never recognize that guys like Obama, and his crowd, once they gain power end up doing scary things like risking the 3rd WWar and printing trillions of increasingly worthless paper money, in order to save their buddies administrating such broke States, like California. Do a little datamining in the web and you´ll find proof enough, which your media pals are hiding.

Are there workers in South Carolina, Florida and Nevada who want to vote for Repubs? I say workers but I mean the middle class -- those who need to work to live and who can sometimes be unemployed. Because GOP despises them. Above all they want to remove the unemployment insurance system. Their reforms are a first step only. Then they'll put jobless out of society like pestiferous folks.
All these three states are leading by Repubs Gov. And have they suceed to resolve both problems we're talking about? Obviously not. Whereas Repubs lead since almost 15 years. So we can't say this is the fault of the economic crisis.

Why GOP candidates didn't speak about foreclosures and unemployment? Just because they don't care. That's it.

Vote for Ron Paul. He is the only honest politician and that is why both Republicans and Democrats don't like him. The main Street media also ignores him

It's Mitt. We know it already. The other candidates fear him, and the media is afraid to hold him accountable for lying and deflecting so many questions. Just at the last debate, he blatantly didn't answer a question only to talk about how great America is. Well, if Mitt wants to be the Cheerleader in Chief, join fox news buddy.

I like Ron Paul. I just don't get why he does not hold a major position in the GOP? I actually agree with many of the republican philosophies, but their actions don't speak for their values.

I would Rather have a 76 tr old who tells the truth any day!then what I have seen in D.C.

I care how my President will preserve my rights, my liberty, my Country my house hold!before he helps corporations.

I would rather my Country is in order and people don't look at me like a warmonger when i am traveling at business meetings abroad. I would like my dollar to be worth a dollar and not .40cents.
I want my country back from the status quo and corruption in D.C.

It's really easy to make sure Romney doesn't get the nomination. All a smart candidate has to do that is opposing him is do what Ted Kennedy did when Romney unsuccessfully challenged him for his Senate seat. Find the old employees he fired from Bain Capital and have them talk up a storm about Mr. "Nice Guy" :)

It makes perfect sense why Romney wants the middle class families homes foreclosed. That way he can buy up their properties, tear down their homes, and get a real nice scenic view of the Pacific for the millions he will spend on his vacation home.

Now I could get into Romney and the Republican Party's great design they have in all of this and the SEC.....Mitt Romney perennial Presidential Candidate and Con Artist! lol

The original move "Wall Street" should not have starred Michael Douglas. I should have starred Mitt Romney. He and his corporate demonstrated how to suck corporations dry for profit before they left them as empty shells laying on the ground waiting to die.

Now that he has practiced his corporate theft on companies he wants the opportunity to perfect it on the American people.

Not a chance.

If it starred Mitt Romney, no one would ever watch it. He is the stiffest, most condescending, socially arrogant yet clueless, knows better than you paranoid android.

Believe me, Bain capital will be scrutinized ans ripped to shreds and I find it interesting that Repubs are doing more to get Obama elected than Obama is.

When the real deal comes out about Bain it will be humiliating for Mitt. Then again with his arrogance as you've pointed out maybe not.

I for one appreciate all the GOP self-destructive efforts.

It's about time America stops looking at the GOP eyes wide shut.

Romney's career represents everything that is wrong about corporate America. Now he wants to sell a fantasy to voters hoping that they won't remember that he and corporate America raped and pillaged the middle class once. Now they want to do it again.

Shame on the corporate raiders for doing it before. Shame on America if we give Romney or any of the GOP the chance to do it again.
