George Stephanopoulos, Stephen Colbert Talk Republicans, Drink Whiskey (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/12/12 08:24 AM ET Updated: 01/12/12 11:51 AM ET

George Stephanopoulos stopped by "The Colbert Report" on Wednesday for a raucous session with Stephen Colbert.

Stephanopoulos came bearing a gift — Jack Daniel's whiskey. Before chatting, the two men each took a shot (Colbert took a bigger one).

Stephanopoulos recently returned as the moderator of "This Week," and Colbert grilled him about the choice. "Isn't that greedy?" he asked, noting that Stephanopoulos is still hosting "Good Morning America."

"Greedy or crazy," Stephanopoulos said, adding that he is signed up "at least for the election year."

Colbert turned to last Saturday's Republican debate, which Stephanopoulos moderated with Diane Sawyer. He asked Stephanopoulos why he spent so much time asking the candidates about their views on contraception, taking a swipe at Sawyer in the process.

"Don't get me wrong, any guy who sits next to Diane Sawyer for that long at least thinks about it," Colbert said. Stephanopoulos laughed but did not defend his co-host. He said the contraception questions had to do with getting the candidates' views on the right to privacy. He also said, seemingly jokingly, that Sawyer had bet him that he couldn't get Romney to say contraception is "working just fine."

NBC News instructed audience members to hold their applause during the first debate after Newt Gingrich's win in South Carolina. It was a decision that observers say benefited Mitt Romney, and Gingrich hit out at Brian Williams for making that call the next day.

It wasnt a diss at all......he was saying she is hot and sitting next to her would make you think about sex and that you may need some contraceptives.

yeah, i don't understand this diss headline. it is crass and immature and somewhat insensitive, but hey, that is colbert in a nutshell. it's his secret sauce, or schtick as one might call it. well the headline did get me to watch it, so it worked

I interpreted that comment as a compliment. As in "thinking about sleeping with her".

I meant 'your' assumptions....

Tour assumptions make no sense. Colbert was giving Diane a COMPLIMENT! He was not dissing her.

What I noticed in the debate was Diane Sawyers voice. Does she always talk in that voice that sounds like she is purring? Also, she talks so slooooooow. NBCs debate was much better IMHO.
