Weekly Jobless Claims Surge As Holiday Workers Are Let Go

Weekly Jobless Claims

CHRISTOPHER S. RUGABER   01/12/12 11:42 AM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — Applications for weekly unemployment benefits spiked last week, largely because companies let go of thousands of workers after the holiday season.

Weekly applications rose by 24,000 to a seasonally adjusted 399,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. That's the highest level in six weeks.

Economists said such a jump is typical in early January and downplayed the increase. It followed three months of steady declines that brought applications to their lowest level in more than three years. And weekly unemployment claims have been below 400,000 in nine of the past 10 weeks.

That's a "clear indication that the pace of layoffs has slowed," said Steven Wood, chief economist at Insight Economics.

Applications typically soar in the first two weeks of the year. That's because many companies lay off temporary workers who were brought on to help during the holidays. The department tries to adjust for those patterns. But the task is difficult because the data can be volatile.

"We would not read too much into the rebound in initial jobless claims," Paul Dales, an economist at Capital Economics, said in a note to clients. "There (are) always problems in seasonally adjusting the weekly data around the turn of the year. As it stands at the moment, the trend in claims remains downwards."

The four-week average, which attempts to smooth such fluctuations, also rose, to 381,750. It had fallen in the previous week to a three-and-a-half-year low.

When applications drop below 375,000 – consistently – that generally signals hiring is strong enough to reduce the unemployment rate. Prior to last week's spike, applications had been below 375,000 for three of the past four weeks.

The unemployment rate fell in December to 8.5 percent, a three-year low. Employers added 200,000 net jobs, double November's 100,000 gain.

More people are receiving benefits. The total unemployment benefit rolls increased to 7.3 million in the week ending Dec. 24, the latest data available. That is 111,000 higher than the previous week.

The economy gained 1.6 million jobs last year, up from 940,000 in 2010. Economists forecast roughly 1.9 million more jobs will be added this year, according to a survey by The Associated Press.

Still, the job market has a long way to go before it recovers from the damage inflicted by the Great Recession, which wiped out 8.7 million jobs. There are still more than 13 million unemployed people in the United States. And millions more who have given up looking and are no longer counted among those out of work.

The pickup in hiring reflects greater economic growth. The economy will likely expand by more than 3 percent at an annual rate in the final three months of last year, economists expect. Rising consumer spending will likely power much of the gain. That would be a sharp improvement over the 1.8 percent growth in the July-September quarter.

Even so, economists worry that growth could slow in the first half of 2012. Europe is almost certain to fall into recession because of its financial troubles.

And wages didn't keep pace with inflation last year. So without more jobs and higher pay, consumers may have to cut back on spending. That could drag on growth this year. Consumer spending accounts for 70 percent of economic activity.

A lot of noise in the week to week numbers. Lots of people here only want bad news to support their pre-existing end of the world/road to hell narratives.. All I know is that I'm seeing good growth, my company is hiring, I'm getting lots of recruiter calls, friends and family are experiencing the same. Things are getting better, regardless of how bad many of you want it to be.

Obamanomics at work. The December numbers were just a spit in the face of Americans who have been chronically unemployed and know better.
08:49 AM on 01/14/2012
Was anyone really encouraged by our drop in unemployment for the month of December?
What a bunch of garbage... things are going from bad to worse.

These are the numbers from ONE WEEK!!! They are essentially meaningless, ESPECIALLY since they are post Holiday season numbers. Simple facts: In the last year we have added 1.9 MILLION private sector jobs. Even after you subtract the 300,000 public sector/"government" jogs we STILL added 1.6 million net, private sector jobs, the most in FIVE YEARS. We've added MORE THAN 100,000 jobs EVERY MONTH for the last six months, the first time we've done that in SIX YEARS. We've added jobs to our manufacturing sector for TWO STRAIGHT YEARS. The last time we added jobs to manufacturing in even ONE year? 1997.

Come on people, look at the TRENDS, NOT at ONE WEEK'S numbers...

Hell Yeah! About time ... 200,000 temporary jobs axed. I just love the optimism that everyone though those December jobs were permanent. lols lols

It's so nice to see jobs being terminated. That's what I call real job recovery.

I guess we'll see in the weeks and months ahead who's correct, but I'm betting that your comment is premature based on on week's numbers.

In other news: Peter robbed him, then paid Paul what he owed him.

Which is it? good news in November when these folks were hired...or just so-so news in January when they file for unemployment. Man, I wished I'd seen the light bulb go "on" when I was about 20 when the word economist popped up. You never have to know anything, just make up a story to fit your perception of "how it is going out there" The profession i chose actually requires me to plan ahead and be correct with my projections and opinions. Who knew? maybe Hank Paulsen?

1.9 MILLION net, private sector jobs created in 2011, the most since 2006. Over 100.000 NET jobs created in each of the last six months, the first time we've done that since 2005. Get a clue you hater....

What is the surprise here? Didnt everyone understand how the numbers actually work? Its going to keep getting worse, as companies restock inventory and then lay off even more people.

I did like how the story was sure to point out, its not Obama's fault.

How many people are working AND what are the wages for those jobs?

I will wait a few months....to March or April....and see if there really are more jobs AND how many of those jobs pay a living wage.

For all the manipulating of numbers........in the REAL world I don't see things getting any better for the working class people around me here in west-central Florida.

Peanut, the recovery is very slow, if you spread it out over the country. Florida still has an unemployment rate up near 10.0%, but, of course, the Florida Repubs want to blame the unemployed for their situation. Florida has gained 100,000 jobs all over the state in the last year (to November... December's figures are not out yet).. but that's just a bit over 1% increase. Florida has gained in transportation, trade, and utilities (+36,000), business and professional services (+15,000), (private) education and health services (+33,000), and leisure and hospitality (+30,000).

Florida is one of the biggest states in job growth over the past year and 17th in job growth (as a percent) year to date. Remember that even 100,000 jobs over a big state like Florida with close to 8,000,000 workers doesn't amount to a very quick recovery. And a big part of the problem, as you mention, is the qualify of those jobs.

But let's keep drug testing those unemployed people!

Here's a link to the BLS report that show the breakdown of jobs by metro area:

You realize that this is the first recession since FDR that has taken so long to recover from, right?

In a recession, the recovery is usually so large, that the recovery far outpaces the recession quickly.

And what do the two slow recoveries have in common?

Progressives in the White House.

you want a living wage then get a living education. Guess you think if you show up for work at Home Depot you should make 25/hr right... how about 8-10/hr and like it

This is the problem - people don't want to chance. They're not raising their kids to study harder, eat better, exercise consistently, read books, etc, etc. Instead, they are still watching TV, playing video games, eating excessively, and having kids they can't afford.

No one wants to discuss the necessary behavior modification required to get that nice middle class job. They just want to believe that they can do what they were doing before, and that politicians are the culprits.

The game has changed, and the US has too many people who are playing it poorly.

The weekly initial claims numbers go up and down. The US gained 1,640,000 jobs in 2011, and the monthly job counts went up every month during the year. However, there were 25 (out of 52) weeks in which the weekly initial claims numbers went up in 2011.

Let's compare this year with last year: Initial claims, adjusted: 12/3/11 to 1/7/12: 385m, 368m, 366m, 387m, 375m, 399m.

Last year 12/4/10 to 1/8/11: 425m, 427m, 423m, 440m, 418m, 437m.

The unemployment rate has dropped sharply in the last few months, but because we've ADDED 622,000 JOBS since August, NOT because people have dropped out of the labor market. A quick look at BLS statistics would make that very clear. Yes, some people have dropped out of the job market, though we don't know why. The BLS also provides a count of how many are employed that is largely ignored for some reason. That count shows that, in the last four months, 1,036,000 MORE people are reporting themselves as employed.

Part 2...

Now 500,000 people who were in the labor force left the labor force for some reason in those four months, but the number of people who say they "want a job" (but haven't actively looked for work in the past month) has GONE DOWN by 100,000 in those four months. Can you count people as discouraged or unemployed if they say they don't want a job? And the "officially discouraged" (those who want a job and have actively looked for work in the past year but not the past month) has decreased from 977,000 to 945,000 over those same four months.

Weekly figures, while they should be regarded, are a very poor indicator of where the labor force is headed from one week to the next. Only a trend of a period of weeks is of concern.

Now note the work force participation rate and population increase.

A third grader can look at data and skew it to prove thier point. If we could actually get hard numbers that include the people who have exhausted their benefits, workers that have had their hours cut, and people that have just given up because they are over qualified for the positions they seek, then we might see the real number. I am sure it is much higher than these government bean counters are reporting. The sad part is I don't see one person running for POTUS that has a realistic solution to the problem.

You don't think O's job plan, which has been obstructed by the Repubs, would add a few jobs? What do you think is wrong with that plan?

Do you know that monthly unemployment rates have nothing to do with who is or who isn't receiving unemployment benefits? If people are still looking for work, they are counted?

First, I have no problem with O's jobs plan and agree the Repub/TP's would attempt to obstruct Christ's second coming if they thought the Dems were for it.

Second, the jobless claims are based on unemployment applications and exclude the groups I previously posted.

Love how even though the plan hasn't worked thus far, you still are able to blame Republicans.

I think the Repubs should just do nothing. Let Obama and the Dems have everything they want and see what happens. If things kept going the way they have the last 3 years, would anything be left to run? Partisan thinking is what got us here, maybe try to come out of your designated pasture and try to be part of the solution. Instead of a puppet for the problem.

B#sh was Prez for 96 months. There are fewer jobs now than there were in 56 out of his 96 months. And we now have finally climbed back out of the hole left to O and the Dems by B#sh, and it was a deep, deep hole, and it was hard to climb out of it. It's amazing that, considering the Repub obstruction, we have as many jobs as we have.
