Paula Deen Diabetes Rumors Say She Will Reveal Diagnosis, Drug Endorsement [Updated]

First Posted: 01/13/12 10:48 AM ET Updated: 01/13/12 09:20 PM ET

The Daily is reporting that Paula Deen, the large-living queen of heavy cooking, is about to come clean with what some say has long been her dirtiest secret: her diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes.

Rumors of Deen's diabetes first started to swirl in April, when The National Enquirer and The Daily Mail both reported that the TV chef was hiding her disease for fear that it would endanger her credibility as a chef.

There's no doubt that fans would be upset to learn that Deen had been keeping such a major disease, and a major consequence of heavy eating, from their knowledge. It would certainly cast an alarming pall over the reckless abandon with which she endorses delicacies like turducken. And it would lend support to rival Anthony Bourdain's much-ballyhooed critique of Deen's culinary style.

It's worth noting, though, that in the past nine months, Deen has diversified her activities away from her old monomaniacal focus on fatty foods. She's been selling flavored lip balms and announced plans for a clothing line. She wrote a best-selling cookbook and ink a contract for two more, at a new publisher. And her son Bobby recently debuted his Cooking Channel show "Not My Mama's Meals," which showcases healthy versions of Southern classics.

Deen has also been slowly moving toward greater candor in recent months: she admitted to smoking cigarettes on a recent episode of the Dr. Oz show. And Deen will soon be appearing, in her own home, on an episode of Oprah's new OWN show, Oprah's Next Chapter. Given the timing, the latter could even be a perfect venue for the diabetes confession.

But if Deen has successfully hidden her diabetes so far, why change tack now?

The Daily has a potentially convincing answer: she's in it for the money. According to the rumors the iPad publication has heard, Deen has signed a deal to endorse a diabetes medication from major pharmaceuticals company Novartis (see Update II below). Leave it up to Deen to turn what could have been a career-wrecking scandal into a financial windfall.

UPDATE: NBC just announced that Deen will speak exclusively with Al Roker on the TODAY Show next Tuesday "to discuss reports that she has type 2 diabetes." We doubt that Deen (who has not responded to repeated requests for comment from HuffPost Food) would have been so cryptic if Tuesday's appearance were going to be a simple denial.

UPDATE II: A representative from Novartis contacted the Huffington Post with the following statement from the drug manufacturer:

The rumors that Novartis has signed a multi-million dollar spokesperson deal with Paula Deen for a Diabetes treatment are not true. Novartis is not working with Ms. Deen.

I do not read this questionable publication. Just stumbled across it. I am now going to stumble back out of it. Waaay to many left-wing loons on it. Y'all are no fun at all. I don't believe I'd want to eat twigs at your house.

It has never been a secert that Paula smoked. If there is a person out there that reads a receipt with butter, whipping cream & sugar and does not know that the dish will be heavy & full of calories, that person shouldn't be allowed in a kitchen, much less around a stove or oven.
I am aware we are loosing our freedoms one by one, but the last time I checked, we as Americans can choose to eat what we want & when we want. As an adult, I am responisble for my actions & it's none of anyone else's business what I eat. COMMON SENSE PEOPLE!
Paula is a wonderful, typical Southern woman & we can march to our own drum as does most everyone else. I think we just might have bigger fish to "fry" considering the state of our country.

I totally agree with you! Every gadget has an on/off button if people dont like what they see or hear turn the durn thing off!! Come on people really??? Leave Paula alone!! so she smoked and cooks with a high fat content!! It may kill us one day but all you dang tree huggin joggers are probably closer to death than we are! Every time you jog You take a chance of getting hit by a bus!!! I agree with the fact also that if you look at a recipie aand you cant tell by looking at the ingredients that it is not low cal.. stay away from my kitchen! Go Paula!!

And of course now she immediately grabs a bottle of diabetes medicine and starts peddling. "Hay y'all....when my heart hurts and stopped up with butter and my foot is amputated 'cause that booger sore won't heal down there I reach for a bottle of Tradjenta."

I saw the update, deejohn. Thanks.

She probably contacted them and they are turning it down. Could also be her PR machine generating that buzz as a way to solicit interested drug companies indirectly.

It is all about persona responsibility. No-one is forcing people to put this crap in their mouths. It is obvious that it is bad for you. So why is everyone blaming Deen?

Well, i for one am SICK AND TIRED of paying high healthcare premiums because people don't eat healthy.

Diabetes is having disasterous financial impacts on this country. We are BY far the most obese country in the world. It has gotten so bad, the military has listed obesity as a threat to national security (because we couldn't field an army)

Personal responsibility - Basically means, as a country- we should do NOTHING. Let corporations and individuals work it out.

That is what we have done for 30 years. And, in case you missed it. It aint working.

We need to reduce obesity in this country. It is a national imperitive. If you have ideas on how to do it with the free markets, lets hear them. But if your idea is to just say "lets keep doing what we are doing." Then that is not a solution.

Yes! And Paula's main premise has been a wink-wink "Come'on ya'll we love this stuff. It's okay."
She's promoting my grandmother's cooking (and I'm Paula's age). It tastes so goooooood....
it'll give you a stoke and insulin dependence (and other complications) in your 60s or younger....but ain't it worth it ya'll?

Cool. So you support continued obesity, continued sky rocketing healthcare costs, a national military threat due to obesity, and one of the worst quality of life in the modern world.

"who cares"... Spoken just like a republican... Now lower my taxes damn it!!! And pass me the cheetos!

Paula Deen is an American who has paid her taxes with the money she has earned doing what she enjoys doing the most. You don't read articles telling us we shouldn't drive cars, rock climb, water / snow ski, play organized sports, be Police officers, or E.R nurses, become pregnant and give birth, become Fire Fighters, or nuclear physicists. All of these can have lasting and even fatal consequences, and all of these are the result of conscience choice. We don't need to told not to cook her recipes everyday. We are intelligent enough to know that if we do we will probably get diabetes or in the least be over weight with a few clogged arteries. I personally am pleased that a fellow American made a living doing what she enjoys most. Her diabetes is her business not mine or even yours. Her passion and name is making her millions of dollars... Obviously there are people out there that enjoy what she is selling...A lot of them...Hopefully the general public doesn't one day deem your passion (with in reason) harmful, unhealthy, unpleasing or otherwise. Honestly I hope Paula Deen continues to do what she has always done!

It isn't Novartis, it's Novo Nordisk with which she has a contract. Don't know how much it's for but I'm sure it ain't chicken feed.
10:05 AM on 01/20/2012
No contract. Go back and read it again. There has been an update.

As I see it, the real tragedy here is her complete reliance on medication. Diabetes 2, the adult onset version, can in many cases be improved with diet, exercise and weight loss. The woman is choosing to slowly kill herself in front of the camera.

Most importantly is educating people to make hard choices for themselves and their children and turn the tv's off to such shows that knowingly produce theses shows just for ratings... such as Paula Deen and even Rachael Ray. I've seen her at friends houses, my God..the amount of food she considers a "serving" is enough to kill a horse and she too loves her butter and cheese!! If it's white, processed or greasy it's not good for you! Stick to watching shows like the Doctor/Oz if you have to watch TV at ALL!! Read books!!

You sound like a very boring person.
10:01 AM on 01/18/2012
I have no problem with Paula Dean withholding her condition. I do Have a problem if she becomes a PAID spokesperson for a medication company...If she has proven that she will withhold info because it may have been a determinate to her show....I feel she may say anything this Pharmaceutical company wants her to say...SHAME on her if she takes money to endorse a drug. If it's such a beneficial product she should add it to a Diabetes awareness program...One she may well run...

Read the post at the end of the article. It was probably added on the update.

When have we become a nation of blame? For Goodness sakes she is just showing you recipes just like a thousand other chefs, cooks, cookbooks, magazines, etc. If you have diabetes or not (which is a personal choice wether she wants to disclose it or not) does that mean she forced YOU the watcher to eat her food and becasue she didn't tell you now you've been victimized by her deciet? COME ON...she doesn't make our food choices any more than Mc Donalds does or for that matter anyone but ourselves!!!
We have free will to choose what we want with the consequences right square on our shoulders!!!
She is trying to make a living like the rest of us...so what if she is paid well to do it!
Also to the judgemental comments on her, or other diabetics weight...know of what you speek before you open your mouth...your ignorance is showing( Plenty of obese people that do not have diabetes and plenty of thin people that do)
04:15 PM on 01/17/2012
She doesn't need to admit to the total population of Americans that she has type 2 diabetes because her obesity tells us that she's already sick with type 2 diabetes. I lost my grandfather of my dad's side of the family from type 2 diabetes. And my aunt currently suffers from onset of type 2 diabetes from obesity. Note: Type 2 diabetes is in no relations to type 1 diabetes. As far for her promoting the medicine to help treat the disease itself, its plain and simple that the medication will not help treat diabetes when simple logic is already applied: lose the unwanted weight and keep it off. If you regain the weight, you will also return to being type 2 diabetic.

I love the comments by all of you people...Everyone thinks Paula Deen's food is terrible and gross and yet I'll bet most of you are over weight, lazy, don't exercise, and don't eat as healthy as all of you profess. I'm sorry to hear of your problem Paula...I too am a Diabetic, steroid induced, from my Heart Transplant. I'm sure that some of the people complaining on here about Ms. Deen are part of the 30.6 % of the Americans that are overweight and at risk. Not all of you blow hards are skinny and not part of that percentage. Take your own advice.
11:42 AM on 01/18/2012
I don't agree with you choice of words...I am not overweight and do not consume processed/junk food...I do not watch Paula Deen due to knowing what she serves/cooks...my choice. However, not everyone is educated and when you have American's darling who is cooking these meals with a annoying accent and smiling to American's while KNOWING she could be creating more diseased people like herself...to me that's unconscionable... and then to go to the other evil (Drug Co) to be hired to push their drugs, knowing she will no longer be the respected Southern Bell Chef...that to is just as unconscionable! All about her pocket not about human health!

Exactly what I said....A BIG LIBERAL BLOW HARD THAT DOESN'T TAKE HER OWN ADVICE. You don't like a Southern Accent...well I bet a lot of the people in the south don't like your biggoted comments either. I don't know when Ms. Deen became "America's Darling" nor do I know when she became a "Southern Bell Chef" but if you don't like what she cooks don't watch. But I reeally think that people like you, that complain WAY too much, need to take a look in the mirror...you are hardly the BELLE OF THE BALL you want us all to think you are.
07:50 AM on 01/20/2012
I, nor is anyone else responsible for what the rest of the world eats. Hopefully, ADULTS, educated or not, knows that the heavy ingredents are to be eaten sparingly. If not, they have more problems than any one person can cure. We are supposed to have "free will". Make no mistake, Paula is now & will always be a Southern Belle COOK, she is not a chef & has never said otherwise. If you don't agree or like her, turn the channel or turn off your TV.
01:07 PM on 01/17/2012
Shame on Paula Deen and anyone else who acts like Type 2 Diabetes is no big deal....My Dad died from Type 2 diabetes and its eventual complications...It is a death sentence. The drugs they use to control it have side effects...That solution is diet and exercise...not a cool new drug program...Now I know why her son is advocating a less harmful way to cook...and eat...
