Iran Claims CIA Behind Nuclear Scientist, Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan's Death

Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan

By NASSER KARIMI   01/14/12 09:42 AM ET   AP

TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran said Saturday it has evidence that the United States was behind the assassination of an Iranian nuclear scientist this week in Tehran, state media reported.

Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan was killed in a brazen daylight assassination Wednesday when two assailants on a motorcycle attached a magnetic bomb to his car in the Iranian capital. The killing bore a strong resemblance to earlier killings of scientists working on the Iranian nuclear program, and has prompted calls in Iran for retaliation against those deemed responsible.

The IRNA state news agency said Saturday that Iran's Foreign Ministry has sent a diplomatic letter to the U.S. saying that it has "evidence and reliable information" that the CIA provided "guidance, support and planning" to assassins "directly involved" in Roshan's killing.

The U.S. has denied any role in the assassination.

Iran delivered the letter to the Swiss Embassy in Tehran, which looks after U.S. interests in the country. Iran and the U.S. have had no diplomatic relations since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

IRNA also reported that Iran delivered a letter to Britain accusing London of having an "obvious role" in the killing. It said that a series of assassinations began after British intelligence chief John Sawers hinted in 2010 at intelligence operations against the Islamic Republic.

British media have quoted Sawers as saying that intelligence-led operations were needed to make it more difficult for countries like Iran to develop nuclear weapons.

Britain's Foreign Office has condemned the killing of civilians. Israeli officials, in contrast, have hinted at covert campaigns against Iran without directly admitting involvement.

The killing has sparked outrage in Iran, and state TV broadcast footage Saturday of hundreds of students marching in Tehran to condemn Roshan's death and calling for the continuation of the country's disputed nuclear program.

The U.S. and its allies fear Iran's program aims to develop nuclear weapons. Iran denies the charges, and says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

In the clearest sign yet that Iran is preparing to strike back for Roshan's killing, Gen. Masoud Jazayeri, the spokesman for Iran's Joint Armed Forces Staff, was quoted by the semiofficial ISNA news agency Saturday as saying that Tehran was "reviewing the punishment" of "behind-the-scene elements" involved in the assassination.

"Iran's response will be a tormenting one for supporters of state terrorism," he said, without elaborating. "The enemies of the Iranian nation, especially the United States, Britain and the Zionist regime, or Israel, have to be held responsible for their activities."

Jazayeri also accused the International Atomic Energy Agency of being partially to blame, saying that the U.N. nuclear watchdog made public a list of Iranian nuclear scientists and officials that "has provided the possibility of their identification and targeting by spy networks."

If the US are behind the killings of th scientist so what? They want to kill us so why not kill people that could make that happen.

USreal is careful to leave minimal fingerprints. But it wants everyone who opposes its policies everywhere to live in fear and total uncritical obedience to its eminence (in its own mind).

Thus we have the hypocrisy that leads to wars, wars and more wars.

of course...its almost obvious. When the U.S. cant, upfront, bring down an enemy, they will resort to stuff like this. They tried it on Cuba for decades.

Blowback is serious stuff. We in the US maintain an unquestioned claim that no borders other thaqn our own have any basis to be honored. To us, Empire America is the rightful owner and controller of the world. We love peace through constant war. Israel as our COO assures that this insanity will continue until we are in WW III, WW IV, etc.

Obama made it clear in the State of the Union address that the U.S. will not permit a nuclear Iran and rather forcefully. The U.S. Britain and Israel have adopted "unofficially" this type of tactic. So is very plausible that either or a combination thereof executed the assasination. Obama seems to favor this "surgical attacks" rather than ultimatums or an all-out- war and he and his allies are tightening the noose around the Iranian regime. However Russia and China are not onboard and prefer to keep Iran as a trump card in dealing with the U.S. The same can be said of N. Korea as a leverage card for the Chinese. Neither regime would survive without Chinese or Russian support. They will only perish if they crumble from within, which is what the Obama Administration is betting on.

So targeted assassinations of US citizens by foreigners is OK, too? Or is it just another one way street?

Newton: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

If it's not terrorism there, and if the US and Israel are not state-sponsors of terrorism, then it's not terrorism when it happens here.

Although I was ot making a moral judgement in comment, the short answer is no, it's not OK. The killing of any human being is not ok. War is a shame on Humanity. But I do blame the Iran ian regime and their pursuit of nuclear weapons hich will bring their own destruction and much suffering to the noble Persian people.

Always ranting about Israel being stolen land. What about Iran? Do you know the word Iran translates to Land Of The Aryans? The rulers of Iran dont look Aryan do they? Hmm, I wonder why! Oh yeah, the Arabs invaded, destroyed the civilization and forced Islam on all the people! What a surprise, lol. Afghanistan, east and southeast Iran, Tajikistan and northwestern Pakistan used to be called Ariane by the Greeks wich was a word based off the old Iranian word Aryana wich was the name of the original homeland of the Aryans. Unfortunately whenever anyone hears the word Aryan today they think of nazis but those people were around a very long time before nazi ideology and the Aryan king of Persia Cyrus The Great freed the Jews from slavery and allowed them to return to their homeland. Can we have Aryana back from the Arabs? Didn't think so, you cant have Israel back from the Jews either.

We are not behind this attack. This is NOT President Obama's style of leadership. He is a Nobel Peace Prize recipient. Iran needs to assure the world that safety measures are in place for the safeguard of nuclear anything you produce. World leaders are afraid of radical extremists getting their hands on them. Iran's current leadership needs to explain how to safeguard.

I am saddened by your naive understanding of things. The Nobel family were inventors of weapons of war and an oil barons who robbed and plundered their way through Europe and Central Asia. Obama has authorized the assassinations of US citizens and the draconian arrest measures by US military on US soil. Gitmo will be full again. He is making the US the evil banana republics that they crusade against. Wake up and smell the coffee..

U.S. Rambo behavior enforced by our politicians including assassinations of civilians has become acceptable foreign policy. Reading some of these threads here in support of the killing of this Iranian civilian engineer may answer why the Iranians have fingered us. The “Good German” and “Good American” are becoming synonymous to many in the world.

What did you say when Iran was caught trying to assassinate a foreign ambassador in the United States: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-15266992

And Godwin's Law by the way, for a totally unjustifiable nod to the Nazis. Assassinations are not limited to, not in any way intertwined with fascist ideologies.

War on Iran: It’s Not A Matter of “If”
by ALEXANDER COCKBURN
As with sanctions and covert military onslaughts on Iraq in the run up to 2003, the first point to underline is that the US is waging war on Iran. But well aware of the US public’s aversion to yet another war in the Middle East, the onslaught is an undeclared one.

Sad to see the comments on here but not unexpected. I guess a lot of US Citizens who haven't got out of rambo mode/cowboy mode yet.

There are a lot of good people in Iran as there are in many other supressed countries. I don't like Iran but as a UK Citizen born and bred to a long line of British citizens, I find it just as hard to find the good in the USA and its superior stance. One of your ex-ambassadors to the UK possed the question after the dreadful 7/11 attack "why do some many people hate the US". No body has tackled that one especially in the states. Many of your allies citizens don't like you either.

Whoever was responsible for this, one family lost somebody to an assassin. While I don't subscribe to the theory that killing never solves anything, I belive that killing should be a last resort and even then the aftermath is sometimes not worth it.

Well of course, "why do they hate us" is the party line that is primarily for American Consumption. And while a few people have brought this point up here it will never get
much air time and is usually dismissed by the media minders.

GOOD! It's not terrorism when WE do it right? WE'RE the good guys people! Just think about all our good accomplishments. Keeping prisoners locked up in Guantanamo for 10+ years with no trial and no access to their families? We're just fighting terrorism. Starting a war with Iraq which lead to the deaths of over 100,000 people? We're just spreading democracy. "Kill teams" murdering innocents in Afghanistan and keeping their fingers as trophies? That's just misplaced enthusiasm. Killing 23 Pakistani soldiers (our allies) with a drone stike? Just an accident, oops. Urinating on dead soldiers? Our soldiers just couldn't contain that stream of patriotism. Murdering a 32 year old civilian scientist on his way to work? He was incinerated by freedom. How come no one in the Middle East likes our country? How could you not like the US?

A civilian scientist working on weapons technology is a legitimate target. You can argue about whether he was or was not working on weapons, but spare me the "civilian" excuse for scientists involved in the military-industrial complex of their nation.

I guarantee if this were an American weapons scientist killed by Islamists or the far left, you would not be here screaming about "terrorism".
