Clippers Beat Lakers 102-94: Chris Paul, Blake Griffin Outshine Kobe (VIDEO)

By BETH HARRIS   01/15/12 01:26 AM ET   AP

LOS ANGELES -- Chris Paul scored 33 points, Blake Griffin had 22 points and 14 rebounds, and the Los Angeles Clippers led all the way in beating the Lakers 102-94 on Saturday night despite 42 points by Kobe Bryant.

Chauncey Billups added 19 points, former Laker Caron Butler had 13 points and DeAndre Jordan had 10 rebounds in the Clippers' second win in four days over one of the NBA's elite teams.

The Clippers beat Miami 95-89 in overtime on Wednesday and have won five of their last six. Paul limped off after hitting a jumper in the final minutes.

Bryant notched his fourth straight game of 40 or more points but the Lakers had their five-game winning streak snapped by their Staples Center co-tenants, who beat them twice in the preseason.

The Lakers got no closer than five points early in the fourth quarter as the visiting team. Bryant broke out for 21 points in the third, but he was limited to 10 in the fourth against the Clippers' double teams.

Billups and Paul hit consecutive 3-pointers to help the Clippers extend their lead to 67-53 midway through the third.

Bryant took over from there, scoring 17 of the Lakers' final 19 points of the quarter to close to 76-72. He began and ended the spurt with 3-pointers and in between hit 7 of 8 free throws while the Clippers were held to nine points over the final 5 minutes.

The Clippers' biggest first-half lead was 55-42 at the break. They outshot and outrebounded the Lakers, who were better in the paint.

The Lakers twice closed within three points in the second quarter, but the Clippers outscored them 16-6 to end the period, with Billups, Paul and Griffin combining for 14 points.

The Clippers opened the game on a 13-4 run, then outscored the Lakers 13-9 to lead after the first quarter. Things got chippy in the final 12 seconds when Darius Morris went up for a basket after Paul was whistled for a foul and Griffin pushed off him with both hands as Morris came down.

Lakers coach Mike Brown got incensed and was called for a technical, while nothing was called on Griffin. Morris had the last word, though, when he sank a jumper from before the half-court line at the buzzer as Paul tried to cut him off. Metta World Peace and Grififin also had technicals.

Notes: Clippers F Brian Cook left midway through the second quarter with a sprained left ankle. ... The Clippers improved to 5-1 at home and 6-0 this season when taking a lead into the fourth. ... The Clippers have sold out all six of their home games. ... The Lakers were playing their fifth game of the week and their 14th of the season, tying Chicago for most games played. ... The Clippers have played just nine games, fewest in the league. ... Clippers backup G Mo Williams missed the game because of an injured right foot that he hurt on Tuesday at Portland. ... Lakers G Jason Kapono is adjusting to sleepless nights after his wife gave birth to premature twin girls named Campbell and Isla earlier in the week. "Thirty minutes is like three hours. It's all been a blur," he said.

Kobe, Chris Paul did what they always do win or lose they always shine, I am a lakers fan, but was deeply dissapointed with the Lakers offensive rebounding (miss odom in this department), that is where the game was lost. Bynum is a good one on one player but can't seem to figure out what to do in a double team. It appears the league has realized this and is always double teaming him. Lakers should have realized this and should have Kapono pass him the ball on the post and when he is double teamed dish back out for 3 pointer.

While Chris Paul played an outstanding game, he did not 'outshine' Kobe, who scared almost fifty percent of the Lakers total points. And while I love Blake Griffin, the number of twenty footers he bricked was rather alarming. Work on those in practice, Blake. This was a league game, not a scrimmage.

Chris Paul is the real deal.
We miss him badly in New Orleans!

Lakers played with pretty much no zeal and the Clippers were clearly motivated.

Case in point: Clippers are one of the worst rebounding teams, yet they had 17 offensive rebounds.

I'm always a Laker fan first, but I am thrilled that the Clips are finally a force to reckon with. It makes living in (well, near) LA that much more fun.

Independent and proud
I am not a Laker or a Clipper fan, But it is cool to see there are still Loyal Fans that back their team win or lose. Unlike alot of LA Fans.
Keep up your Loyality

I'm happy for the Clips, they deserve a good year.

The Lakers have the biggest and perhaps the best front court in the NBA. In the fourth quarter Kobe and the point guards forgot about Gasol and Bynum (who each had six inch advantages over their defenders). Kobe's scoring looks great on ESPN but this guy cannot win the game by himself. He'd better pass the ball to his bigs if he wants to compete for a championship this year.

Glad to see a regular season game has made the haters happy. Because when it comes down to the Finals, you will see the Heat and the Lakers.

Its funny, because instead of saying it was a good game, all I hear are lakers fans hating and claiming all sorts of irrelevant stuff. How are clippers fans haters for being glad their team won the game?
Oh, and no team from LA will be in the NBA finals this year.

Because I seriously doubt any of these people are Clipper fans.

And yes, the Lakers will be there.

Great game. Unbelievable to see the Lakers guarded by my other favorite players.

Celts? Hopefully, we won't see them in the Finals for another 22 years, like last time.

See ya.

Is that possible that Chris Paul doesn't wear any tattoos? He looks strange surrounded by all those carnival looking bodies.

Those few extra home games the Lakers have been getting the last several years aren't so beneficial this year.

Chris Paul was just awesome in this game, and so was Blake Griffin. Chauncy hit some huge shots as well. Hope Chris Paul wasn't too badly hurt.

Be on the lookout for Portland in the West. They are good. Very good. Still, with that said, my Celtics are struggling at the moment, but I'm not giving up on them. I expect them to get their acts together, and start winning these games they really should be winning.

That Kendrick Perkins trade is what unraveled the whole mess. The Celtics lost both Robinson and Greene this year.

Little bit of chilly weather here in San Jose, today. High in the 50s. Expecting some rain on Wednesday. Haven't had much of it this year so far.
