Giants Beat Packers: New York To Face San Francisco 49ers In NFC Championship Game (VIDEO)

CHRIS JENKINS   01/15/12 09:18 PM ET   AP

GREEN BAY, Wis. — For Eli Manning and the New York Giants, Lambeau Field has become a familiar launching pad. After beating the Green Bay Packers at home for the second time in four years, they only hope this trip ends the same way – at the Super Bowl.

Manning threw three touchdown passes and the Giants shocked the Packers 37-20 in an NFC divisional playoff game Sunday. Manning threw for 330 yards, sending the Giants to San Francisco for the NFC championship game next Sunday night.

The Packers (15-2) might have been the reigning Super Bowl champs, but the Giants (11-7) might be the hottest team in the NFL.

"I think we're a dangerous team," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "I like where we are and how we're playing."

The Giants stunned the Packers with a touchdown off a long heave from Manning to Hakeem Nicks just before halftime, then knocked them out with a late touchdown off a turnover. Lambeau Field fell silent as the Giants swarmed the field in celebration, with a handful of New York fans chanting, "Let's go, Giants!"

The Giants have been on a roll ever since beating the rival Jets on Dec. 24, beating the Dallas Cowboys to get in the playoffs and then blowing out Atlanta in the wild card round last week.

The win came four years after the Giants beat a Brett Favre-led Packers team in the NFC title game. It wasn't nearly as frigid this time around, and the Packers' vulnerable defense seemed to be waiting to get sliced up.

"This team knows how to win on the road," defensive end Justin Tuck said. "It seems like right now it's our time."

Manning found six different receivers against a porous Packers defense. But Manning did the most damage with his throws to Nicks, who caught seven passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns.

Nicks' biggest play was a 66-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter. His score at the end of the half came on a 37-yard pass into the end zone with defenders all around.

"It was a big momentum play for them, but we were not deflated as a football team," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said.

Nicks said he wasn't even sure he'd landed in the end zone.

"All I said was, I've got to go up and get it," Nicks said. "Honestly, I (didn't) know where I landed. When I saw where I was, it was exciting."

The Giants' defense also was able to defuse the big-play abilities of Aaron Rodgers and the Packers' offense.

Rodgers was 26 of 46 for 264 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception. He also was the Packers' leading rusher with 66 yards on seven carries.

Meanwhile, the Packers' past problems with dropped balls by their talented group of wide receivers returned at the worst time imaginable.

And while the Packers' defense has been vulnerable all season, giving up far too many yards and big plays, they've typically made up for it by forcing turnovers.

This time, the Packers were the ones giving the ball away.

Green Bay lost three fumbles, including one on a rare giveaway by Rodgers. The Giants also sacked Rodgers four times.

With the Packers trailing 20-10 at halftime but finally beginning to look like themselves on offense to start the second half, Osi Umenyiora swatted the ball away from Rodgers, and Deon Grant recovered the fumble at the Green Bay 37.

"With a 10-point lead, we're going to get after you," Umenyiora said. "And that's what we did."

But the mistake didn't cost the Packers points, and Green Bay cut the lead to seven points on a 35-yard field goal by Mason Crosby late in the third quarter.

The Packers put together another drive early in the fourth quarter, but Michael Boley and Umenyiora combined to sack Rodgers on fourth-and-5 in Giants territory.

After carving up the Packers in the first half, the Giants' offense hit a lull in the second half. But they broke out of it to drive for a 35-yard field goal by Lawrence Tynes to take a 23-13 lead with 7:48 left to play.

Packers running back Ryan Grant then fumbled after catching a pass and the Giants recovered, taking the ball back deep into Green Bay territory.

Manning then threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Mario Manningham and the Giants took a 30-13 lead. Rodgers rallied the Packers for a 16-yard touchdown pass to Donald Driver, cutting the lead to 30-20 with 4:46 left.

The Packers then tried on onside kick, but the Giants' Victor Cruz recovered.

New York's Brandon Jacobs scored on a 14-yard run with 2:36 left to put the game away.

It was an emotional day for the Packers, who welcomed back offensive coordinator Joe Philbin for Sunday's game – two days after the funeral service for Philbin's 21-year-old son, Michael.

Joe Philbin had been away from the team all week after Michael Philbin's body was recovered from an icy river in Oshkosh, Wis. on Monday. A preliminary autopsy showed that he drowned.

"I think deep down, a lot of us wanted to kind of get this one for him," Rodgers said.

All the pundits are claiming NYG to be the "hottest" team in the final four. Wasn't last week's hottest team the Saints? And they lost to SF? Wow, zero respect. Watch SF win this week and still head into the SB as the underdog–Whatever! GO 9ERS!!!

Look at what has transpired with the G-Men the last 7 weeks. And remember they didn't lose to the Cardinals near the end of the season. Their regular season schedule speaks for itself. Not the team you want to play a 2nd time around. Let's see if you come in here Monday.

Haha, I'll be in here Monday (win or lose), because I don't let sports control my life. It has its proper place as an enjoyable source of entertainment.

The 'last 7 weeks of the G-Men?' Maybe YOU should look at the schedule. Remember the beatdown by the Redskins AT HOME? At that time, it was a game they thought they really needed for the playoffs because of the lurking Cowboys. SF wrapped up playoffs by week 13. The game at the Cards in week 14 was very competitive (only losing by 2). Look at the Cards at home toward the end of the season–They were playing great.

This is going to be a great game and I'm really looking forward to it. I grew up 9ers, so that's my team, but I really like Manning for his character. He's kinda like Alex Smith in that they had all kinds of SH*T talked about them, but they just kept their heads down and did their thing. IF NYG beats 9ers, I'll definitely be rooting for the G-Men.

The Niners should've won. Manning had good stats, but they couldn't do anything against SF defense. I know...should'ves, could'ves...whatevers...If you seriously do not understand Kyle Williams gave NY 10 points (and the win), you don't know football. For what it's worth, I'm pulling for the G-Men against Pats.

The three words that best describe the Packers' performance yesterday are, and I quote STINK, STANK, STUNK!!! And yes, I DID steal it from "How The Grinch Stole Christmas"--but ya gotta admit it's got the ring of truth! And yes, this Packer fan is trying to laugh to keep from crying. They could not have played a more gawd-awful game if they had tried--and I think they all knew it, too. How the hell this bunch could have gone 15 and 1 is a mystery to me! The way they played, they deserved what they got at the hands of the Giants--that is simply the truth, period.

There is a fine line in Football between "rest" and "rust" and the Packers were not sharing the same page on plays - exhibit A was all of the dropped passes - to much rest will give you the rust..
10:05 PM on 01/16/2012
Wow. I had no idea there were so many hysterical packer haters out there. Maybe you need to take a double dose of your meds today to calm down.
09:20 PM on 01/16/2012
no surprise here. last year the packers were hungry. working hard, trying hard. this year they got full of themselves. lazy and complacent. in the last few weeks of the season they were sleep walking. they thought they only had to show up. they had wake up calls and hit snooze and slept right through them. aaron rodgers became more concerned with his "touchdown move". he had a good year for sure. but all of them got fat and lazy. and that is why a not so great giants team will go see the 49ers.

When the media was hyping Tebow mania, the Pats must have heard Tbone mania because they feasted on him all game long.

Tebow is learning and he will win a super bowl someday because he is a winner!

Your Giants gave the Pack just what they deserved--believe me!

YES Coughlin is smart; the Giants coach made an excellant call on first down and goal with a play action fake and pass for TD.
Manning is great! giants have excellant running backs and receivers; they will beat SF and Pats will defeat Ravens.
Then we will have a super bowl that is well matched and too close to call!

In all the hue and cry of various upsets and other winners/losers, let's not forget about the San Francisco 49ers! A year ago, absolutely no one could or would have foreseen or even thought that they would be where they are today. It is simply amazing that this storied franchise may be rising from the mists. Kudos go to the owners (for finally doing something right since taking over ownership 10 years ago after Eddie DeBartolo had to give up his ownership in the team), for hearing a very good general manager, and for hiring simply an outstanding astonishing head coach. Kudos to the 49ers and Coach Harbaugh. It's been an amazing season; I hope you've enjoyed every moment. I know I have.

What will the packers do after this letdown. Last time something this traumatic happened to the fan base half of them followed Favre to MN and became Vikings fans. Anyone remember the first year Favre came to lambeau to face the almighty pack? It was a home game for the Vikings. There were more Vikings fans than packers fans. It was pretty awesome. Actually the loudest I ever heard lambeau was that day. Every other game it's like a drunk retirement community in there.

Even as a Bears fan I picked the Packers to repeat this year. You've got to hand it to the Giant's defense. When they're playing as a unit, they're hard to beat.

Have I insulted Jerry Jones today? I don't think so. So here goes: Jerry, the cowbums are so bad they need some of your botox to make them improve. In your case, however, the botox hasn't done much at all.
