Jon Huntsman Conceding 2012 Presidential Race Ahead Of South Carolina Primary

First Posted: 01/15/12 09:28 PM ET Updated: 01/15/12 11:36 PM ET

Jon Huntsman is dropping out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination, according to campaign officials.

An aide to Huntsman confirmed the news to The Huffington Post and said the former governor of Utah would endorse Mitt Romney on Monday. The aide added that Huntsman "didn't want to stand in the way of the candidate most prepared to beat Obama and turn around the economy."

Huntsman will deliver a speech on his decision on Monday at 11 a.m. ET in Myrtle Beach, S.C., according to the aide. Romney will not stand alongside the Utah Republican as he delivers his remarks.

Huntsman placed third in New Hampshire's primary election last week after investing significant time and resources in the Granite State. Following the contest, he said, "Third place is a ticket to ride, ladies and gentlemen."

Huntsman would have faced an uphill battle to deliver a strong performance in South Carolina's primary election, which will take place next Saturday. Recent polls have shown Huntsman trailing rival contenders competing for the GOP nomination by a wide margin in the conservative state.

Once discussed as the candidate that the Obama reelection team found most challenging to face, Huntsman stumbled under the Klieg lights of the presidential campaign. One close adviser acknowledged, during the final days of the New Hampshire primary, that he found the transition from the world of international diplomacy to electoral politics "difficult to execute." Complicating matters was fundraising, which failed to pick up after Huntsman's initial entrance into the race.

There were green shoots along the way. Huntsman won the backing of several prominent editorial boards, including The State, South Carolina's largest newspaper, which endorsed him less than 24 hours before his campaign announced he was leaving the race. During the final days of the New Hampshire primary, aides sincerely believed he was hitting his stride, with a sharp Sunday morning debate performance and a well-received final speech in Exeter, New Hampshire.

A second place finish would have made it much easier to keep the campaign going through South Carolina and into Florida. But Huntsman couldn't break through. His final percentage of the vote (17) was more than top aides expected as recently as two days before New Hampshire held its primary. But it still came off as a disappointment.

"Jon Huntsman is proud of the race he ran and his message of restoring trust in Washington," emailed one aide. "He did not want to stand in the way of the candidate best prepared to beat Barack Obama."

No one wants this candidate except the media. Probably China was funding him. As well as his daddy. And maybe the CIA. Our first media candidate...ever read "Idori" by William Gibson? Maybe our next elections will start to feature manufactured candidates, animated figures, people with ideas and feelings are so messy.

Greetings Friends:

Jon Huntsman is dropping out of the 2012 primaries???? He was never in it. He underestimated his father and his father's prudent use of his wealth. He automatically assumed that "daddy would buy him another position"of power in government.

Silver spoon children do have unrealistic expectations.

I'm sorry to read, (LOL as I pick myself up off the floor) that Jon Huntsman is dropping out of the race. The other candidates will concede in the following order very soon; Paul, Perry, Gingrich, then Santorum. I may "flip-flop" on the last two. It's Romney vs Obama, and guess who will win!

Just think. If romney becomes pres, he could define marriage as between a man and some women.

Romney. We'll get another puppet president. Until we change the way Washington operates, we will only get pass through puppets controlled by one group of power elites or another. Bush was big oil, Obama is Wall Street, all are Pentagon controlled.

Michael Steaphens: You couldn't have been referring to the current President, home slice,The GOP got to Huntsman and broke his back with a deal. That's why he endorsed. A deal was made. A voice was silenced, and Romney is the Vulture. We'd be better off with 30 years of Obama than this greedy Bird-Bain.

The fact that Huntsman ran in the 1st place shows just how out of touch he is. He NEVER had the support of rank & file conservatives.

He could hve at least waited for the vote in SC before dropping out. I still think he was the most likely GOPer to win the presidency.

Not at that any of them will win. BTW... if anyone wants to take bets on that.... I'll gladly take yer money.

What bothers me is how quickly he jumped in line endorsing Romney. Seems fishy to me, he could have at least waited until SC was over. Or simply said he will stand behind the nominee. Bachmann and Cain both dropped out and have yet to endorse.

Fishy like.... what, he's a pinch hitter for Romney? He had to endorse somebody, and I guess he endorsed the Repubnican he thought would most likely win. Because his colleagues didn't endorse anyone yet doesn't mean there's a rule that says he can't either. It's a personal decision when and if to endorse another candidate. The question is, given that Colbert is more popular than Huntsman... I don't think his endorsement adds up to a whole hill o' beans.

Now only if all of them could go away.. so Mr. Obama, can continue doing the Great Job, he's been doing, saving the Banks, Car companies, and offering "Health Care", too those that want it!

Thanks, for ending two wars, and bring home the troops, finding and killing Bin Laden, and the other two killers of Americans! Keep up the great job! I know our Country, is in good hands with you at the helm! I am sure those parents with children under twenty six, are grateful, for now being able to keep them on their health care, even with per-conditions!

Now go get the Evil Doers none as the Republicans! Working only for the Rich People called the Koch Brothers, and Governor Walker! and Florida's Rick Scott! Another big idiot!

Please learn how to post a coherent response. Proper grammar makes it easier to understand your point of view. My response may well be based on a misunderstanding of what you intended.

So let me ask, who is the richest senator? Out of the top ten congressional members which party do seven of them belong to? Also, just who is George Soros and what is his connection to Mr. Obama? Would care to address these questions?

Am I to understand from your response that you'd like to see Republicans and conservatives, particularly if they're wealth, sent to gulags, psikhushkas, or killing fields? Is that what you'd consider an example of true American patriotism?

As for parents being grateful for being REQUIRED to keep adult children, even with preconditions, non-residency with the parents, or ability to pay for their own policies, on the parents' healthcare plans until the age of 26, have you forgotten that they must also bear the cost of doing so? This provision is just one more attempt by the Obama administration to drive private insurance companies out of our increasingly socialist/fascist market.

What's wrong with Ron Paul? Is it that he's not a Republican, conservative, or Libertarian, but rather an anarchist? I know that sounds harsh but in a debate when all of the GOP candidates were asked what they though a fair TOTAL tax from ALL sources would be, the rest said between 15 to 30%. Ron Paul emphatically said ZERO!

To reach that we'd have to completely dismantle government. That's anarchy. I really think he doesn't feel comfortable even with the Constitution but would desire to back to the Articles of Confederation.

In addition, I honestly don't buy his explanations from his newsletters that were racist. I also believe he harbors a deep seated animus towards Israel and the Jews and would stand by while Iran developed AND used nuclear weapons against Israel.

As far as Mr. Obama is concerned, he's a Fabian socialist applying the Coward and Pivens plan to collapse the USA in order to build a USSA.

Huntsman wasn't going to win in the first Place, you don't do wrong and expect to be Rewarded for wrong, President Obama thought enough to add him to his Adminstration and at the same time Huntsman Plan was to Rape the Obama Administration, for what he could, it Backfired on him.

While Huntsman was Praising the President, what deals was he making with China, on Monday, we saw the real Huntsman, there is no different between him and Romney excpt names, Huntsman FLIP-FLOP YESTERDAY AND HE SHOWED HOW MUCH A HYPOCRITES HE REALLY IS.

Please back up your insinuations that Ambassador Huntsman engaged in illegal or unethical business deals behind Mr. Obama's back, Also please state which subject he flip flopped on. Or are you just a partisan demagogue trying to sow doubt as to alleged improprieties where there are none?

This is really too bad. He could actually make a difference as a leader. Romney...he will probably get the nomination and ask Hunstman to run with him. Unless Romney actually gets a vision and puts a plan on the table to fix the economy that can be discussed, he will lose. Huntsman had a plan, and never got to explain it in detail in the debates.

The GOP just let the one guy who CAN lead drop out of the race. The GOP is doomed as they wander in the weeds this year. I also think its funny you describe Romney as the unqualified, dangerous community organizer.

The GOP will lose in November to our dear community organizer leader and commander-in-chief of the American people this November and in 2016. The GOP will not accept mavericks like Jindal, Rubio, or Christie.

Huntsman needs to grow a spine.....he got punked out by the top Repubs to bow out....He doesn't believe in Romney or his ideas....instead he was told by the powers of the party to drop out and support Romney because he is the most electable Republican candidate that can beat Obama. Look at the ads and debates and things he said about Romney that are very true....then watch him bow his head tuck the tail between his legs and read the script..."now is the time to put my differences aside and get behind Mitt Romney...bla bla"......It was actually hard to watch and that is the line all true conservatives will use to say why they like Romney now...who cares about his policies or his ideas it's all about beating Obama.......What a sad group of people

Greatly disappointed.Huntsman was the best among the Republican nomination seekers ! His dropping out from the race will only ensure re-election of a week person for another term.

I think there must have been a deal made behind closed doors. Sure seems a little funny that they're both mormons and Huntsman is endorsing Romney after the things he had to say about him. I guess they are circling the wagons hoping to defeat Obama. Trouble is, Romney is not the man to defeat Obama. Romney has a history of flip flops and he is moderate. I don't know that plays well in the South....

Your claims about flip flops is absurd. Romney had to be a Republican in a socialist state. Here in Mass. that is a fine line to walk. He is moderate and conservative in his thinking. A very capable man, and a fine man. He is the polar opposite of the corrupt BO. What happened to the the men who took down Wall St.? Franklin Raines 240 million in his pocket, Jim Johnson 20 million in his golden parachute, and Tim Howard 20 million. Where are they now? Financial officers in Obama's election office. Corruption America.
02:27 AM on 01/17/2012
Have you looked at whose funding Romney? Same Wall St. giants are are behind Obama. Obama just hides it a bit better than Mitt does.
07:32 AM on 01/17/2012
Where did the guys who run Wall Street get their power. Surprise, it was from Rebumblicans. The guys who want deregulation.
