Newt Gingrich 2012 Campaign Plagued By Embarrassing Mistakes

Gingrich

By JULIE PACE   01/15/12 10:09 AM ET   AP

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich was greeted with a standing ovation when he was announced at a barbecue.

Too bad the former House speaker wasn't around to see it.

He was inexplicably missing, and his absence forced the event's moderator to ask awkwardly, "Can we check and see where the speaker is?"

It was just one in a string of clumsy, head-scratching events staged by the Gingrich campaign since the Republican primary moved to South Carolina, a state that the candidate says he must win if he wants a shot at the nomination.

The chain of slip-ups raises questions about the campaign's staffing and organizational skills, issues that have haunted Gingrich during the 2012 race.

Gingrich's campaign manager and other senior advisers resigned en masse in June after disagreeing with the candidate about the direction of the campaign. In a bureaucratic blunder, the campaign failed to meet the requirements to get Gingrich on the ballot in Virginia, where Gingrich lives.

If Gingrich's campaign survives next Saturday's South Carolina contest, the organizational challenges will only grow.

Florida, the next state on the primary calendar, is a complex, expensive and often unwieldy battleground. That vote is Jan. 31.

In at least one instance in South Carolina, Gingrich's campaign missteps have given his opponents a chance to take advantage.

With Gingrich running late to Friday's barbecue in Duncan, the only other candidate at the event stepped up and stepped in.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum worked the room with his wife, Karen, scoring valuable one-on-one time with the conservative and evangelical voters that both he and Gingrich are courting.

Gingrich also was running late to two events Thursday in Columbia, where he was being introduced by a former ally in the U.S. House, ex-Oklahoma Rep. J.C. Watts. Both times, Watts had to stall. At one point, Watts told the crowd that he only had three minutes of material prepared, but was going to need to talk far longer.

"I think I see the speaker's bus!" he finally exclaimed, a hint of relief in his voice.

Gingrich's choice of venue has also seemed off-base at times given the voting bloc he needs to win South Carolina.

One of the events where he kept Watts waiting was a home-ownership rally that appeared to be dominated by Democratic speakers and attendees.

On Saturday, Gingrich attended a question-and-answer session at a black church. Yet blacks made up just 2 percent of voters in the 2008 South Carolina GOP primary, according to exit polls.

Oh, and it looked like nobody checked to make sure the microphones were working at the church forum.

The first questioner, E.T. Williams, tried two different hand-held microphones, but neither worked. As staff scrambled to fix the problem, Williams, a Democrat and supporter of President Barack Obama – joked that someone must not have wanted him to ask what turned out be critical questions of Gingrich.

Technical problems have plagued the Gingrich campaign during their telephone conferences with voters in other parts of the country.

A call scheduled for Saturday morning never took place. The dial-in number was invalid.

The campaign set up a new number for a Saturday night call with Florida voters. This time the number worked, and Gingrich was able to field questions from several voters.

But the call wasn't incident-free.

There was nothing but silence on the other end of the line when the moderator introduced the first two questioners. The issue was resolved, but not before Gingrich himself raised an important question.

"I wonder if we're having a technical problem," Gingrich said.

Not a fan of Newt but I think they ALL have made massive blunders.

Heaven help us if Newt were to win and surround himself with these people. If they can't run a campaign successfully, how in the world could they possibly run the country?

The only mistake was choosing to forget History when it come's to Newt. Really what were they thinking. I know Newt started off with the whole Presidental bid to promote his Books and DvD's. But some in the Party really think he is a Presidental hopeful. When a freind at work who is Repulican and went through the whole GOP field flavor of the month starting with Trump, Perry, Cain, then he said Newt's my man I busted out laughing. When he asked why I was laughing I told him I wasn't going to say anything because I didn't want to spoil it for him. Since I'm 51 and still remember Newt and all his games.

If only the Republicans could have married the speaking skills of Newt Gingrich with Mitt Romney's money then they would have had: an unethical, untrustworthy, unelectable, cold-hearted, candidate with a lot of money that could speak well.

Its not the "campaign" but the campaign's candidate that is the embarrassment.

I mean really a candidate who resigned as Speaker of the House under threat of over 80 ethics violations!?!?!? The charges weren't brought by just Democrats either there was a vote of 395-28 in the House against this freak of ethics.

The only thing that is more of an embarrassment to the GOP than Newt is the people who are supporting his campaign, really what are these people thinking.

YOUR People voted in the CRAP that sits in the Oval Office. Newt is the best experienced person to run this country. Unlike Obama who is simply running it into the ground!

That makes about as much sense as saying a bank robber has the best experience to run a bank.

So you want to tout Newt’s ‘experience’ with the Reagan administration for orchestrating the dramatic deregulation banks, Wall Street and other financial institutions that laid the foundation for ‘Great Recession of 2007’ as the reason Newt should be president??? Or maybe we should all stand in admiration of Newt’s fine work in helping the Reagan administration usher in the largest growth in the number of federal employees since the end of WWII a record that stood until Bush came along and grew the number of federal employees at a greater rate than Reagan and that’s if you don’t even count the establishment of the DHS or count the multitude of “private contractors†hired at outrageous prices.

For the record the number of federal employees under the current administration has been reduced by 500,000 since Obama took office.

Why would his campaign be any different than the rest of the republicans? Their only interest in text books is in rewriting them to paper over their failings.

" and another one bites the dust.....and another one.....and another one....." The clown car on the GOP Circus Train to Tampa 2012 is slowly becoming less crowded. This might be apparent good news for Romulus, but, then, with the focus off of the more comic contenders, he will be under increased media scrutiny, charged with having to explain away some rather embarrassing policy positions and shifts.

The Gingrich 2012 campaign is plagued by an embarrassing candidate. This guy has always lived under the delusion that people were impressed with him as a person. He is just one of many toll booth attendants on the American influence peddling turnpike.

Gingrich was only in the race to promote his book. He never planned to still be in the race this long. That's why there are so many screwups--he didn't think a long range plan was necessary.

3 wives and anyone is surprised about campaign mistakes? Newt is in the race to beef up Newt Inc and sell books and go on the speaking tour! I wonder when Palin will get upset with the competition for money.

Palin's waiting to be drafted by the convention when it's clear no-one really likes any of these guys. The Repubs would run Palin and Rubio, assuming -- in their strange alternative universe -- that they've got the female and Hispanic vote all locked up.
06:25 PM on 01/22/2012
Which they so obviously do not. I wouldn't vote for Palin even if I were paid millions to do so.
