-- Notable quotes from the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards, announced Sunday in Beverly Hills, Calif.:

___

"Golden Globes are just like the Oscars without all that esteem. The Golden Globes are to the Oscars like Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton, bit louder, bit drunker, bit trashier, and more easily bought. Allegedly. Nothing's been proved." – Host Ricky Gervais, as he opens the show.

___

"I'd like to thank Michael Fassbender for taking over the frontal nude responsibility I had." – George Clooney, accepting best actor, motion picture drama, for "The Descendants," referring to the actor who plays a sex addict in "Shame."

___

"I was talking to my mother in Jersey before I came out, and she said, "Have fun, but have you seen `Mildred Pierce'? Guy Pearce is so good. He's going to win.' So I haven't seen `Mildred Pierce,' but I'm sure it's really good, and I just love our moms because they keep us humble" – Peter Dinklage, on accepting best supporting actor, TV miniseries, drama, for "Games of Thrones," referring to Pearce, one of his competitors for the award.

___

"I first won this award when I was 15 for `My So-Called Life,' and I was utterly stunned and overwhelmed as one is. And the first thing I did when I left the stage was burst into tears because I realized that I had forgotten to thank my parents. I brought my mom with me tonight, Carla." – Clare Danes, on accepting best actress in TV series, drama.

___

"I would like to thank two studios that really proved the adage that Peter and I could make the telephone book if we wanted to." – Steven Spielberg, who won best animated feature for "The Adventures of Tin Tin," referring to his producing partner Peter Jackson.

___

"I'm just trembling here. Oh my God, I'm going to fall off these high heeled shoes." – Octavia Spencer, accepting best supporting actress/motion picture, who played a maid in "The Help."

___

"Why don't you make a film our daughter can see for once?'" – Martin Scorsese, accepting best director for "Hugo," referring to how his wife, Helen, urged him to make a children's movie.

___

"I'm currently trying to conceal a massive erection." – Seth Rogen, standing next to co-presenter Kate Beckinsale.

___

"Oh boy, he's so much fun." – Johnny Depp, referring to show host Ricky Gervais who took digs at Depp's box-office dud "The Tourist," and referred to "recreational drug use" by Depp.

___

"The only thing worse than not hearing your name as a nominee is hearing it from the host." – Gerard Butler, as he presents first award of night, referring to host Ricky Gervais' sharp digs at various stars.

___

"If I'm still a virgin, Ricky, why don't you come over here and do something about it. I haven't kissed a girl in a few years ... on TV." – Madonna, as she presents best foreign language film after being introduced by Ricky Gervais, who referred to her hit song title "Just Like a Virgin" with a loud cough.

___

"I thank HBO for being absent when we needed you to be and for being present when we needed a little bit more shooting time." – Kate Winslett, winning best actress/TV miniseries for the lead role in "Mildred Pierce," aired on HBO.

___

"Right now, if I were to write a song, it would be a tap dance number." – composer Ludovic Bource, as he accepts the award for best original score for "The Artist."

CORRECTION: In an earlier version of this article, actor Michael Fassbender was described as the actor who plays a sex addict in "Shameless." He was actually in the film "Shame." We regret the error.

Sorry, Madonna anecdote about how someone annoyed her during the filming of her new movie and how it eventually lead to her genius inspiration when writing this song was flat, egotistical and you could feel the room just staring back at her dumbfounded. I think she felt a little out of place with that great bunch of film people and needed to tell everyone how justified her winning that award was. I almost felt sorry for her.

Any truth to the rumors that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is actually a cover for CIA black ops or the favorite drop off spot for DOJ's Witness Protection Program? I mean does anyone actually know these people? The head is supposedly the chief correspondent for the Pennysaver in Lagos, NIgeria and makes most of his money selling maps to the homes of the stars.

Madonna: .....I grew up watching movies like most people in this room," she said. "The movies that allowed my imagination to run wild, that made me believe that I can dream and think outside the box were foreign films made by the likes of [directors] Fellini, Visconti, Truffaut, Godard, just to name a few.......................Madonna, don't wait for Hollywood to call

Ah, the Golden Globes ! Possibly the event which may influence Oscar voters but does anyone remember the Pia Zadora incident/fiasco of many moons ago? And then the GG were essentially banished to the bowels of cable TV only to eventually re-emerge (Phoenix like) to become a MUST attend for Hollywood stars. And how many people are members of the HFPA who vote - go look it up. And how MANY awards shows do these "stars" need to be at to constantly have their egos stroked and their bellies fed? Maybe the Rebublicans have taken a cue from all this lathering (but a different one for certain) to have a zillion debates. ARGH ! ! !

Her quip was funny and well played. Most stars back away from comedians in this type of forum because the comedians make come backs for a living. Madonna more then held her own.

I didn't think it was funny at all. It was like most everything else she does which was in poor taste.

I love how this story is about a whole list of memorable quotes, yet the Madonna haters are using it to bash her. I guess she's still relevant, or all of you wouldn't waste your time commenting on her.

Pompous Madonna: Foreign movies are so much better than American movies, or words to that effect.

Ok, just a few observations.

Angelina, have a meal for the love of dog.
Sophia, same for you.
Ricky, it's not nearly as funny when we're expecting it.
E!, these people aren't really that significant.
Claire, good job.
Is The Artist a silent film?
Morgan, good job.
HFPA, if you feed long enough off the thing you love, you will destroy it.

I'm so glad she's not using her British accent anymore.

She was sliding into it. I get it, though. She's been living there for quite some time. Some of it, I suspect is affect; some of it, I suspect, is osmosis. Think about where you live, where your family and friends live. Everyone has a little bit of the patois of their hometown, adopted or otherwise.
03:15 PM on 01/16/2012
She started using the accent the minute she moved in. That's much different than being there for quite some time.

Actually I'm not sure if many of you know. Madonna was up against Elton John for the best original song award. And if you've watched the Youtube videos of the red carpet walk where Elton John DISSED Madonna, and Madonna took that diss in her stride, AND not gloating at Elton after she beat him to the award, you'll realise she's actually very gracious and a class act.

Yes, she was very gracious about it. She could have said something to him and didn't. A class act, indeed, in spite of what all the haters will say on this thread about it.
