Obamas Observe Martin Luther King Day With Volunteer Service

Obama Volunteer

JULIE PACE   01/16/12 07:34 PM ET  AP

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama evoked Martin Luther King Jr.'s own words about public service Monday as Obama and his family celebrated the life of the late civil rights leader with a volunteer project.

The president, along with wife Michelle Obama and daughter Malia, joined other volunteers at Browne Education Center in Washington.

During brief remarks, the president said there was no better way to honor King than to do something on behalf of others. He also acknowledged the controversy surrounding a quote on the new MLK memorial in Washington, which is being changed amid criticism that it did not accurately reflect King's words.

"What he really said was all of us can be a drum major for service, all of us can be a drum major for justice," Obama said. "There is nobody who can't serve, nobody who can't help somebody else."

The inscription on the King memorial, located on the National Mall, currently reads: "I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness." The phrase is modified from a sermon known as the "Drum Major Instinct", which King delivered just two months before he was assassinated in 1968.

In the speech, King's words seem more modest than the paraphrased inscription: "Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter."

After meeting with volunteers, the Obamas headed to the school library to help build bookshelves and a reading corner for students. The president and first lady were then put to work painting two King quotes on the library walls.

The president stood on a chair and carefully used blue paint to write the phrase "The time is always right to do what is right." Mrs. Obama painted the words "I have a dream."

In the evening, Obama and his wife attended a "Let Freedom Ring" tribute to King's legacy held by Georgetown University and the Kennedy Center.

The Kennedy Center program included selections from musician Bobby McFerrin and the Let Freedom Ring Celebration Choir comprising Georgetown University students and local area church members.

The university presented an award in honor of King to Clarence B. Jones, a former speech writer for the civil rights leader.

Music Director Rev. Nolan Williams Jr. told the story of the Freedom Riders who were often injured and jailed as they worked to integrate public buses in the South. He said their message was still true today, which he jokingly offered to Obama as a new campaign slogan: "You can lock us up, you can shut down government, but buses are still coming."

Odd, most left-handed people (me being one) wear their watch on their right wrist. Pres. Obama doesn't.

Dear Mr. Obama, your endorsement of Martin Luther King Holiday as nothing but a cheap and petty “day of service” labor, is another example of you following in flawed conservative political tradition rather than making progressive change and charting a new direction.

We only have word of mouth accounts of Jesus Christ, but millions around the world were eye wittiness to Martin Luther King martyrdom and ultimate sacrifice. No Pope, Priest, or clergy in modern history is more worthy of holy and righteous praise than Martin Luther King. However, there has been a collective attempt by many politicians and president like Clinton, Bush, and this Obama administration, to conspire to social engineer, lessen, and steer Dr Martin Luther King’s holiday, to nothing more than an average blue-collar service day of labor, instead of the hallow day of grief, bereavement, rest, reflection, and resolve for which it should be celebrated.

Respectful African Americans and others should be still and respectful on Martin Luther King’s holiday, and perform this so-call “service work” on President Day or some other trivial holiday.

I I respect your opinion but I fail to see this as an agenda of our president. Why not introduce a broader view of what Dr. Martin Luther King's wishes may have entailed? He fought so hard for equality and freedom for all mankind. What better way to utilize such liberties if not to include serving all mankind. President Obama speaks in a way to empower all people of all socio-economic backgrounds. It takes great spiritual affinity to give of yourself and treat others as you'd want to be treated. Each one teach one and each one serve one another in unity. Our president is not merely suggesting that you throw away your memories of the struggle, he just wants us to move forward and take advantage of a changing society. We should have grown much more than we have by now however, we have made some major strides in the right direction. Please continue to educate those who don't fully understand the struggle, but at the same time assemble yourself and claim your blessing

The part that you missed is where I stated that Mr Obama is following in the tradition of others.

For over four hundred years African Americans labored in vain, then after we thought we were free, our honorable leader was assassinated while seeking our rights and freedoms. If there were ever a day, event, or tragedy that calls for a day of rest, grief, and reflection it is Martin Luther King Holiday. Why would any grieving child, mother, father, or other want to engage in recreation on the anniversary of such a loss?

There are 365 days -- why a day of service / labor on this day of our greatest loss? We can rest, morn, march, or fight, but Dr King’s assassination is not a day for deflective community service / labor!

I wonder if the federal government can be run by volunteers. It will be more efficient and it will cost a lot less.

Mr. King's words continue to give me frissons, as they did the first time he spoke them. Truth cannot be silenced, though attempts to do so come in waves through the years.

"The time is always right to do what is right." Funny the great president who signed the NDAA into law and puts death warrants on American citizens and put the death blow to our economy in support of the big banks should write such a phrase... probably with a smile on his face.

It is just shocking to me that in this United States of Duh there are still dolts saying this kind of garbage. Please do some research about who was President when the economy was falling apart, who started the bank bailouts and who was still a candidate for President during this time.
I'll give you a clue. Bush was President still in 2008. President Obama was a candidate.

I love my President, First Lady and family. They have very strong family values and just like the Clintons have raised Chelsey, The Obama's are raising their children to know how to be humble and a servant to others.
I certainly can't say that about the Bush daughters.
