'2 Broke Girls' Casting Call For A 'Hot Asian Guy'

2 Broke Girls Hot Asian Guy

"2 Broke Girls" seek a "hot asian guy" -- and no, this isn't a casting call for an adult film.

Courtesy of Angry Asian Man, CBS's "2 Broke Girls" casting call reads:

2 BROKE GIRLS, Episode #118, "And the Full Disclosure" Episodic 1/2 hour multi-camera CBS / Bonanza Productions AFTRA

[EDWIN] 22-32. A hot Asian guy, he is the web designer for the girls' cupcake site. Clearly, he and Caroline have a thing for each other, and after hours at the restaurant, things quickly heat up between the two... GUEST STAR/CO STAR

Perhaps the new character "EDWIN" is an attempt to defend the show against accusations of racism over the series' single Asian character, Han Lee. Played by Matthew Moy, the character is a short, emasculated nerd with no chance in hell of being taken seriously. Also, the fact that he speaks English with an accent seems to be a joke in and of itself. The Hollywood Reporter doesn't mince words about the Han Lee character: "... what CBS is doing every Monday night is trotting out one of the most regressive and stunning racist devices a network has produced in five or more seasons."

Watch Han trying to orchestrate a flash mob, years after it was cool:

The show's producer, Michael Patrick King, was dinged for Han Lee's character recently at a Television Critics Assn. press event in Los Angeles. While sitting next to Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs, the stars of "2 Broke Girls," King defended the ethnic humor and called the show an "equal-opportunity offender" while praising New York (the setting of the show) as a melting pot of all different nationalities and backgrounds. King also offered up his own sexuality as proof that "2 Broke Girls" isn't socially destructive. "I'm gay. I'm putting in gay stereotypes every week," he said to the crowd.

Other journalists didn't relent on the subject, and one challenged King on his point about sexuality: "Does being a part of one traditionally disenfranchised group make it then carte blanche to make fun of other traditionally disenfranchised groups?"

The Los Angeles Times described King's demeanor as "combative," and said that he cast a "sour note" on the panel discussion. Read the entire transcript at The Wrap and let us know what you think about "2 Broke Girls" in the comments below. And if anyone knows any hot asian guys trying to make it in the industry, be sure to pass along this casting call.

It's a comedy, they make racist jokes about everyone. Get over yourselves. The actor is asian, and obviously doesn't find it offensive.

so what if the guy is asian? his character is still a racist caricature. get over yourself.

Good comeback by repeating what I said. haha. Wow. Continue to be offended by everything on tv and not having a sense of humor, lighten up.

"Does being a part of one traditionally disenfranchised group make it then carte blanche to make fun of other traditionally disenfranchised groups?". This show isn't any good and to have an Asian character like Han on there is like a smack in the face. Beyond offensive.

the character's offensive. Hope this show ends so fans can go watch other humorless steaming piles of crap and that the actor playing Han wises up to his choice of roles. I agree with the above challenge at naming 10 current asian male actors. can't be done
03:04 PM on 01/20/2012
See how many asian male actors you can name from memory and then try to justify having this actor be representative of that population let alone. The character is offensive and it's not surprising if that's lost on the type of idiot who thinks that show is funny

Dear, Mr. King,

The difference between you injecting your gay stereotypes is that it is yours to mock. Just because you feel comfortable with your own identity doesn't give you the okay to humorize another.

What you are missing is context. Chinese Americans were the first to be legislatively and institutionally banned from American soil. Hate crimes have actually resulted in fatalities over the years. Asian american are not represented in the media; the few they do have are de-masculinized. What you don't get is that it's not just about putting Asian Americans in there. It's HOW you portray them. If your goal is to broaden diversity in the media, congratulations, you just committed an epic fail.

I don't think any of that is worth the humor. Oh yes, and besides the offensiveness the show sucks. Script is predictable and acting is sub-par. Once you get off the sex/race bent you might actually be more creative without your humor rather than using "ethnic humor" to support the show.

how very "hp" to pose the article this way. there is nothing wrong with a casting call calling for a good looking asian. in fact it is great that a REAL asian may find a part in such a hit show. it is just so much of hp's babble when they try to be provocative or create a story out of nothing. it is becoming tiresome. and greatly detracts from hp's credibility. but then i guess i am getting what i pay for here.

"...web designer for the girls' cupcake site"? Someone should tell the writers that cupcakes are about as "hip" as flash mobs. And Williamsburg, for that matter.

Leave it alone. This show is great! Nice to relax to a comedy at the end of a day. I don't feel their picking on any one. Mess with the show, and you'll ruin it. Leave Han alone, I'm sure he enjoys his pay check:)

might I suggest "hot asian guy" from GLEE?

Well, I understand the racial sensitivity, but... He is their boss.
08:03 AM on 01/18/2012
Get over it already... so sick of hearing the whole race card all the time. Not every decision is going to be looked at as" how can I not offend someone." If we did that then we would never do anything cause every decision we make could possibly offend someone!! 2 broke girls is one of the funniest new shows on right now, and they make fun of everyone. If you don't like it then turn the damn show off!!

Well put Debra, and Thank You. I love that show. It needs to be left alone.
12:35 PM on 01/18/2012
Your post is interesting. Did you read this article? It would be easy to retort "If you're sick of hearing the whole race card all the time, stop reading the article!"

I think the show is great as it is, and does not need to be changed, but I also don't feel the need to belittle and repress the voice of a minority group expressing genuine concern. Think about how many Asian American actors you can name that play or have played a leading/positive role in a film or show. You would be hard-pressed to find 10 names.

Best new comedy of the year. And they do, in fact, joke about everyone, hipsters and rich people get it more than anyone else, though... ;)

My wife thinks Ming Tsai is hot, but this is from a known foodie.
