Newt Gingrich Suggests Rick Santorum And Rick Perry Should Drop Out

Newt Gingrich

FLORENCE, S.C. -- Newt Gingrich said Tuesday that he is the only Republican candidate capable of beating out Mitt Romney for the party's nomination, and suggested that the other candidates drop out so conservatives can unite behind him.

"If we win on Saturday, I think I will be the nominee," Gingrich said during a town hall meeting with voters here. "I'm the only conservative who realistically has a chance to be the nominee."

"So any vote for [Rick] Santorum or [Rick] Perry, in effect, is a vote to allow Romney to become the nominee, because we've got to bring conservatives together in order to stop him," Gingrich said.

The GOP's conservative base is currently split largely between Gingrich, the former House Speaker from Georgia, and Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator. Texas Gov. Perry is lagging but still receiving some support from the same pool of voters.

Gingrich's comments were driven by a recognition that with only a few days to go before the Palmetto State votes in its primary Saturday, a conservative splintering will likely allow Romney to win, which would make him very hard to beat from that point on.

"The challenge to me is to convince conservatives to come home and have a single candidate on Saturday, and I'm going to work very hard over the next four days to do that," Gingrich said.

Talking to reporters after the town hall meeting ended, Gingrich made a more detailed case for why he, and not Santorum, is the better conservative alternative to Romney, the former Massachusetts governor.

"Rick is a very good friend of mine and he's a nice man," Gingrich said. "He lost his state for reelection by the largest margin in the history of Pennylvania. There is no evidence that he could put together a national majority."

"I helped Reagan in '80, I helped Reagan in '84. I helped in '88 when Bush was down 19 points in May and we won by 6 in November ... I helped design the '94 campaign which had the largest one-party increase in an off year in American history."

"You could make a pretty good case I actually know how to design a national campaign," Gingrich said. "I don't think Santorum can win. It's not because he's not a nice guy, but he doesn't have any of the knowledge of how to do something like this."

A reporter asked Gingrich if Santorum should drop out. Gingrich did not explicitly say that he should, but suggested that that would be the best choice for the good of the "conservative movement."

"I'm respectful that Rick has every right to run as long as he feels that's what he should do," Gingrich said. "But from the standpoint of the conservative movement, consolidating into a Gingrich candidacy would in fact virtually guarantee victory on Saturday, and I'd be delighted if either Perry or Santorum would do that. They have to make that decision."

UPDATE: 5:10 p.m. --

LEXINGTON, S.C. -- Rick Santorum decried Newt Gingrich Tuesday afternoon for having the "arrogance" to call on him and Rick Perry to drop out of the Republican primary before South Carolina's primary vote this Saturday.

"It's an enormous amount of hubris for someone who lost their first two races, who thinks enough of themselves –- because a couple of polls have him at this moment in time ahead of me –- that everybody should step aside and let him, who hasn't defeated me in two of the elections so far, to let him have a wide berth," said Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator.

Santorum came in a close second in Iowa, and possibly first, depending on a certification of the vote. But in New Hampshire, Santorum came at in under 100 votes behind Gingrich, finishing fifth.

The latest poll of South Carolina voters Tuesday, by Monmouth University, showed former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 33 percent, Gingrich at 22 percent, and Santorum at 14 percent.

Gingrich's suggestion that Santorum and Perry, the governor of Texas, should get behind his candidacy reflects the urgency that Gingrich feels about preventing Romney from winning the Palmetto state Saturday after his victories in Iowa and New Hampshire.

"We've got to bring conservatives together in order to stop him," Gingrich said at a town hall in Florence.

But Santorum said Gingrich's comments earlier in the day here in the state represented a "character issue."

"I wouldn't be so arrogant as to suggest that anybody gets out of this race," Santorum said.

He described Gingrich as erratic, saying he has been "for the business community one day and railing against it the next day" and "for global warming one day and railing against it the next day."

"We need someone who has that stability, someone who has that sense of understanding and humility, that can be a leader of our country," Santorum said.

At least the Romney supporters and Gingrich supporters are right about one thing: The Romney supporters are saying that Newt can't beat Obama and the Gingrich supporters are saying that Mitt can't beat Obama.

I agree and my vote will make it so.

Foolish bravado. Gingrich has tons of baggage, but he is a brilliant debater and unless the economy improves significantly by Election Day, Obama will have a tough time selling his ideas to those of us who are not drinking the Kool-Aid, namely Independents.

Newt is running a strong 2nd in So. Carolina and after his terrific debate performance on Mon., he is the logical choice for conservatives to rally around. He was ahead in Iowa by about 20 points when Romney started the negative attack ads. Santorum did well there but he spent virtually all his time there, visiting every one of the 99 precincts. Perry did much better in the last debate, but he is trailing the pack and it would be wise for him to drop out and endorse Newt.

Obama is afraid of one man in the debates, Newt. That is who has to be the one to challenge Obama. And for those of you that think the race is over, Romney has far fewer than 20 delegates and you need over 1100 to win. If he won in Iowa, he won by 8 votes. The only other state he won was N.H., his second home state. So, let's not crown him yet.

Newt, time to pack it in, divorce your "looks like first lady material" wife and marry your current mistress. And don't worry, you'll be forgiven, 'cause your a Catholic now.

Newt is riding high after last night , but let's see how long it last. Romney will be the nominee simply because Newt cannot beat President Obama. And his comments from last night did have racial tones and even though the crowd in So. Carolina loved it, I so glad that mainstream America wil not go for this kind of rhetoric.

As Newt said, sometimes facts get in the way of being politically correct. And thanks to Obama, we do have the highest poverty and food stamp rates. His policies have failed and all Obama can do is blame everyone else. His first 2 years he had Super Majorities in Congress and passed the failed stimulus bill ($278,000 per part time job) laden with pork and the number one jobs killing bill, Obamacare, another disaster.

I'm with ya there … but where are we ever going to get a non-corporate big money candidate and how will anyone get to know them without the press allowing them to show up without mudslinging?

Since Newt wants at least 2 of the Candidates to step down, I hope he IS one of them.

Newt's verbal statements have a tendency to divide this Country along racial lines, especially against African Americans. I wonder if it has something to do with the first Black President. He has thrown one racist comments out at every stop he makes, be it African Americans, the Hispanics, and Muslims. It looks as though he has no other way to win except to SCARE White People with racist Rhetoric in the South especially.

He wants the Republican Party to give him a chance to stand on stage and put a Fist in the President's face by calling him a Nazi, Socialist, and Food Stamp President, poor minority children should be Janitors, as NASTY as he can say it with "dog whistling" all the way for his Red Meat Crowd on National TV.

If the Republican Party want to claim they are a BIG TENT, Newt just BURNED that Big Tent DOWN! Newt is one of the most DESPICABLE persons in the Race for President. The Country does not need anyone like a Newt to be even more of a DIVISIVE TO THE COUNTRY.

I hope there enough of us who have a memory on Newts tenure in the House and how he personally set the Political discourse in the Country on the NASTY TRACT it is ON TODAY. Women, especially, should turn away from him in disgust.

Newt's own daughter at 13 was a 'janitor' at her church. I started working when I was 11 and it taught me a very good work ethic. Too bad you can't see the forest for the trees and see everything thru a racial prism. Newt would help the poor help themselves. Obama, the king of entitlements is not the answer.

I love the false bravado of this man. Before Iowa, he was proclaiming that it was hard not to see him as the party's nominee only to come in 4th in Iowa and New Hampshire. Now with his monumental 4th place finish, he wants others to drop out. What a hoot.

Gingrich I'm asking you now to get out of the race, you have a past that isn't good, Obama would eat you alive! We need a true conservative, Rick Santorum. ... Newt you may be witty and well read but you aren't right for the White House!

Let's see...fidelity issues, somewhere around 84 ethics violations, $300K in fines...not presidential material... Add onto that his sorry attempt to go after the ra cist vote - which most people saw quite clearly - and I'd say that it's Newt who needs to drop out.

Mr. Gingrich said I have come to a very tough decision historically speaking. After much consultation with my campaign staff and supporters, and endless hours of prayer I have come to a very painful but needed decision. Regarding the Presidential campaign I have finally realized that Mr. Santorum and Mr. Perry must withdraw. Because I don't want them to leave empty handed I will give them each a copy of my latest book!
