Paula Deen Diabetes: Star Confirms Diagnosis, Drug Endorsement

Paula Deen Diabetes

AP/The Huffington Post   First Posted: 01/17/2012 9:17 am Updated: 01/18/2012 11:25 am

On Friday, HuffPost Food covered rumors (first reported by The Daily) that Paula Deen would soon come clean with her diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes. But now it's official -- the celebrity chef made the media rounds Tuesday morning. Here's the Associated Press on Deen's announcement:

Celebrity chef and Food Network star Paula Deen is teaming with drugmaker Novo Nordisk to launch a program that aims to help people live with Type 2 diabetes and promote a Novo diabetes drug.

Deen has Type 2 diabetes and takes Victoza, a once-daily noninsulin injection. The website links to promotional materials for the drug.

Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes. In Type 2 diabetes, the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not use it efficiently, allowing excess sugar, or glucose, to accumulate in the blood.

The earliest reports -- including ours -- had identified the Deen's pharmaceutical partner as Swiss company Novartis -- but instead, the real company is the similar-sounding, much smaller Novo Nordisk. The latter, which is based in Denmark, manufactures the Type 2 Diabetes drug Victoza, which Deen told USA Today she injects daily.

In that same USA Today interview, Deen said that, although she had initially thought, when she got her diagnosis in 2008, that she would be forced to change her entire life and diet. But she soon figured out how to rectify her passion, food, with her new status. It's all about moderation, she says. "You don't want to make a steady diet of just lettuce," she told the newspaper. "You don't want to make a steady diet of fried chicken."

Deen also dismissed rumors that she was covering up her diabetes to protect her reputation. "That was not why. My knowledge about the disease was very limited," she told USA Today. "But now I'm coming with good information, something that can help and bring hope to other people. It may sound cliché, but it's the God-honest truth."

Deen also appeared on the Today Show Tuesday morning to speak with Al Roker about her disease. Check back here shortly for video of her appearance, but here's Deen's key announcement:

"I was diagnosed three years ago during a regular physical exam with my doctor, that I had type 2 diabetes. I am here today to let the world know that it is not a death sentence. I am working with a very reputable pharmaceutical company. I'm working on a new program called 'Diabetes in a New Light.' You can go to our website. I'm going to be there for you and help you manage every day of your life with this, because it can be done."

So that's it, folks: it's official. And that means that we also have an answer for Paula Deen critic Anthony Bourdain, who asked Eater, incredulously, how long Deen had known about her diabetes in an interview from the Cayman Islands on Monday.

UPDATE: Here's the clip from Paula's appearance on the "Today Show" this morning:

If you're not already a Paula fan and want to get an idea of what her food is like, here's a slideshow we put together on seven of the heaviest dishes in the history of her cooking show:

This recipe starts, as all good Paula recipes do, "with a lil' butter," which translates, naturally, into an entire saucepan full.

And BTW Pawler -- you are free now to apologize to Tony Bourdain for what you called his assassination of your "character."

She could have focused on healthy eating and prevention, if she really wanted to educate the public not push another drug for big pharma.

If she endorses it, it must be a ham flavored drug.

In all fairness, it isn't her Velveeta fudge recipe. And yes, it sounds disgusting, but it's actually pretty good. I make it at Christmas and give it away.

I love how the gluttonous woman doesn't try to help inform people of the dangers of diabetes and warn people not to make the same mistakes she has. Now that she has it she is trying to teach people how to live with the disease and is trying to get drugs made to help people just deal with it. Typical. This way she can still plough through the food and just drug herself up after instead of actually living a healthy lifestyle.

I can feel my arteries clogging just LOOKING at some of the stuff she makes. Being a talented chef means that you have a wide variety of dishes in your repertoire, and you can cook for the needs of many people. Anyone can put a stick of butter in mashed potatoes to make them taste good. It takes real talent to make them taste good and be healthy at the same time.

Hmmm..wonder if all that fattening stuff she loves to cook and eat had anything to do with it?! HA! YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT!

While this is unfortunate, given Ms. Dean's love for high fat foods, it's not unexpected. I do hope that as a celebrity/personality, she will see this as an opportunity to educate and give back. We have become a culture of excess - maybe she can be a role model for some that need motivation to change.

It is not her love of high fat foods that did this to her...you being a nurse should know that. It's her love of carbs combined with high fat foods.

While I believe "food porn" is a real thing that truly does affect the eating habits of certain people, nobody's making the viewing audience eat "rib casserole" at gunpoint. A little self restraint goes a long way and a littler personal responsibility is a refreshing idea these days.

Look, Paula's recipes are rich, fattening and delicious. We all recognize or should recognize that food eaten in moderation is never the problem. One of her desserts for instance, would a special treat, occasionally -- not every meal fare. With a few adjustments the recipes can be made more healthy, but again, an occasional indulgence doesn't have to be fatal. To Paula I say, work to control your diabetes and live life to the fullest!

Let's be realistic here, does anyone here watch her show and think they can eat like that every day?? I don't, I watch for entertainment value and sometimes I learn something. Health nuts develop diabetes, this is not some moral failing on her part. Sheesh.

I agree that anyone watching her show should realize that these dishes are not meant for daily intake. Many are acting like Paula personally force-feed her calorie laden food to the masses.

Diet is not strictly the cause of diabetes. Many other factors seem to be at play!

Good grief diabetes is nothing new. Shes just making it fashionable .
