Queen Margrethe II Of Denmark Feted By Bejeweled Princesses, Queens (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 01/17/2012 5:28 pm   Updated: 01/18/2012 6:18 am

They don't call them "crown princesses" for nothing. Yesterday while we were curing our Golden Globes fashion hangover stateside, European royals were freshening up for their own fashion parade.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, Princess Mary of Denmark, Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, Queen Silvia of Sweden, Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece, Queen Sonja of Norway and a slew of other royals got together at Copenhagen's Christiansborg Palace Chapel to fete Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, who is marking 40 years on the throne this year.

The princesses, princes, kings and queens were in their finest regal attire. The men swapped two-button suits for military gear, but it was the women who really got to have fun: in place of their typical shift dresses and skirt suits, the ladies wore gowns of velvet, lace and satin... and gleaming bejeweled tiaras upon their heads.

There were so many diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds crowning the royal women, it was hard to know whose to look at first.

So we'll just brighten the end of your day by giving you all of them and letting you decide: who's got the best bling in the land?

Clockwise, from the top left: Princess Mary of Denmark, Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece, Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, Queen Sonja of Norway, Queen Anne-Marie of Greece & Queen Silvia of Sweden.

Bumper stickers never give enough detail

The caption misidentifies the pictures of the Queen of Sweden and the Queen of Norway. Queen Silvia of Sweden is the fourth picture. Queen Sonja of Norway is the sixth. Not the other way around.

Amazing jewelry with amazing histories. For instance, the pearls (not shown here) that Queen Elizabeth wears are part of a much more elaborate set of pearls (the largest one being in one of the royal crowns, now) that Queen Elizabeth I 'received' from Mary, Queen of Scots, who got them from her mother-in-law, Catherine de Medici, Queen Regnant of France in the late 15th and 16th centuries. Who gave them to her, who can say given her family was the wealthiest in Europe at the time, from Florence, Italy. All the jewels have histories and are hauled out for occasions only such as this and truly royal occasions. You don't see QEII in her royal jewels that often, except state affairs and opening of parliament. Even then, though, she does not break out the 'big stuff'.......! Just amazing, for me, more the history of the jewels and the families...ie when Norway was a part of the Kingdom of Sweden, which is was up to the last century, I believe, Sweden wanted some new blood in their royal family, so they elected one of Bonaparte's generals, to be King of Sweden and Norway. His wife, Desiree, had been a fiancé` to Napoleon but he set her aside for Josephine. The son of Queen Desiree married one of Josephine's daughters...which rumor says the dad was Napoleon making Napoleon's blood still alive and well in all royal families in Scandinavia. Just FYI.

is the woman in the bottom right wearing elizabeth taylors jewels? it looks like it

Nope, that emerald parure has been in the Norwegian (and before that, the Swedish) Royal family for years.

Something else interesting is that four of the six were born commoners.

Whoops: five of the six. The only "born royal" is Anne-Marie of Greece, who was born a princess of Denmark.

Guess there is no such thing as "less is more" in Fairytale Land?

They all pale in comparison to Queen Elizabeth during her trip to Ireland.

I like the round stones in Queen Anne-Marie's tiara, but why are they wearing the exact matching necklace, earring, and I assume bracelet? Very distracting. Wow that's a lot of stones in one place.

I believe it's called a parure: a matching set of necklace, earrings, and either brooch, bracelet or ring.
09:36 PM on 01/18/2012
And they trot them out for all of the big family occasions. Lots of history in that bling.

All the jewels in the world won't make some of these horses look like women.

Careful. With the kind of $$ that bling represents, they could buy you and sink you in the nearest ocean.

Nothing like jewels to make you look older. BTW, Meryl Streep could play Queen Silvia if the latter had an interesting story.

200-odd years? Compared to over a thousand in some of those countries?

That must be so much freakin fun!! They don't really get to wear those types of things very often. Maybe a few royal balls here and there. Must be nice!

Is it just me or does Queen Sonja (bottom right) look like Coach Beast in Glee? Just in the face. Minus the curly perm, of course
