Scott Walker Recall: Organizers Collect 1 Million Signatures, Far Exceeding Number Required

First Posted: 01/17/2012 1:50 pm Updated: 02/22/2012 12:33 pm

WASHINGTON -- Democrats needed to collect 540,208 signatures to trigger a gubernatorial recall election against Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R). On Tuesday, they announced they had far exceeded that number, collecting more than one million signatures.

Tuesday was the deadline for recall organizers, led by the group United Wisconsin, to turn in their petitions. The number collected is 185 percent of the signatures required to force a recall election. Organizers also collected enough to trigger recalls of the lieutenant governor and four Republican state senators.

The total went far beyond Walker's expectations.

"From what they say, they're probably going to turn in 720,000 today," Walker said in an interview with right-wing radio host Rush Limbaugh Tuesday afternoon. "That's a lot of signatures, but they've been planning this since late last spring. They've got tons of money from the big government unions in Washington and around the country."

A Walker recall is the next step in a campaign to oust state Republicans who pushed forward controversial budget legislation stripping state employees of their collective bargaining rights. In August, Democrats successfully recalled two Republican state senators from office, but they fell short of the three needed to take control of the chamber.

Republicans plan to challenge the signatures collected by Democrats, and the state Government Accountability Board must certify that of the signatures that were turned in, there are indeed 540,208 valid ones. Democrats had hoped to collect a significantly higher amount in order to buffer against any signatures that may get disqualified. The verification process will take months, and GAB plans to ask a court for more than the allotted 60 days to complete its review process. A recall election -- if it happens -- may not occur until at least June.

There have been only two successful gubernatorial recall elections in history, one against California Gov. Gray Davis in 2003 and one against North Dakota Gov. Lynn Frazier in 1921.

No Democrat has stepped forward yet to announce a challenge to Walker in a potential recall race. Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate said the party won't put a candidate forward until early 2012 so the recall is viewed as a referendum on Walker and the focus remains on his record.

"The burden is on him here," Tate told the Associated Press.

While Democrats were announcing the results of their efforts in Wisconsin, Walker was on the East Coast. He has a New York City fundraiser scheduled that costs at least $2,500 per person to attend.

Details from the Wisconsin Democratic Party:

Walker supporters claim he will win the election. They (and Walker) are claiming that this is just big government unions committing some sort of scam.

Clearly, they  are ignoring the realities:

Walker's job  approval ratings have vacillated between between 38-43%

People who slam unions ,never seems to come up with any thing ,but the same talking points, they only give union money to dems. HELLO, thats because dems ,fight for workers rights and benefits ,the greedy selfish ceo are not going to give one dime more then they feel they have to.this is part of the trickle down mentality that the right, have swallowed ,the unions are the standard bearers ,between the rich ,who never ever have enough wealth , and the average american who wants a good wage and a few benefits for a good days work.

Walker supporter? If you see his policies as something good you call it as you see it. I'll let his record speak for itself and his backers ( read money) are no friend of working people anywhere. He's a liar and a hired hack. A million Wisconsonites agree with me. 3000 came to support him yesterday. Did you send him a card?

The "progressive" cult of today, tools of Big Union, politicians, their cronies, no thought to their self-interest, the taxpayer and the citizen, WHICH IS WHO THEY ARE!!

Unbelievable, a governor working to get power back from union monopolies, to the taxpayer and their representatives, who would object to that??

Except for Big Union and their political cronies, the Democratic National party, the party of group-think instead of individual rights and responsibilities.

This is nothing more than raw political power play by the Democratic Party and their cronies.

Don't you think it's worth listen to when 1 million ordinary people rise their voices?. That's nearly 1/3 of the registered electorate, and they are simply fed up.

In my book, that's democracy - not raw political power play.

Was the last election NOT Democracy??

Why are you lying about Walkers Record and pushing FEAR?? Nobody got laid off, the Unions gave only Minor concessions, and Walker's almost balanced the budget. Seems the bigger threat to Wisconsin's future was billion dollar deficits .. not Scott Walker.

This Recall is meant to benefit just a small % of the people of WI .. GREEDY Public Union Workers who could give a rip about the rest of the people in the State as long as they can retire at age 52 making nearly double the average family of 4 in WI ..

This election is about Raw Political Power .. not Democracy ..

On the other hand, big money, corporate takeover of america, jobs sent overseas, low pay, no benefits, ridiculous CEO salaries, Wall Street run amok and look what has happened to America!

It only took republicans 8 short years to gut this country! "Bust it out" as the Mafia would say

You need to stop reading so much Huff Po ... Our government is the root cause of the problem .. ridiculous Trade Agreements going back decades along with thriving economies overseas trying to catch up with the USA which need the help of US Corporations.

American Corporations built up America, now they are building up the World. Do you deny how every place the Free Market takes hold, we have riding incomes and a rising standard of living?? The US has become increasingly difficult for business thanks to restrictive Government Policies.
02:33 PM on 01/22/2012
Ever hear of compete, or fail?? YOU run a company, how you gonna survive, as the world catches up to the US and we face more competition? I'm assuming, of course, that you have NO PROTECTION FROM YOUR POLITICAL PALS AND THEIR CRONIES, like FNMA and FHLMC had with Barney Frank and pals, so they could buy up despicable Subprime and NO Cash Down mortgages, knowing the borrowers couldn't pay off the mortgages when due, but with political cover no problem, our taxpayer credit card there to bail 'em out!

Got a problem with "corporate takeovers"? Got a problem with survival of the best companies, as chosen by WE THE CONSUMER?? Prefer the self-anointed wisdom of your politicos and their bureaucrats? Prefer Greece, or Cuba, to the US? Please explain. Otherwise, you make no sense.

"They've got tons of money from the big government unions in Washington and around the country."

I had no idea that Washington(DC) was such a hotbed of big government unions . Is this guy ever going to make sence ? And why mention only the union money being used in the effort . Corporations also have tons (and tons and tons) of money and they can use it as well . Are they not also rushing money into an effort to keep their pro-business Gov ? If not , could it be that big business senses that the money would be completely wasted ?
03:40 PM on 01/20/2012
Over 90% of union contributions, which amounted to well over $400 million in 2008, goes to the Democratic National Party and/or its candidates. Corporations are about even.

Why is that?

Then why should we take what the Democratic Party has forced, and continues to force, on us: TRILLIONS in new spending; legislation and regulators running amok in health care, finance, energy, politicizing EVERYTHING and cutting their cronies in for the take.

Why can't you people use REAL progressive heroes, like Steve Jobs, John Mackey, BRuce Springsteen, Norman Borlaug, those that CREATE; rather than Fidel, Che, Hugo, Kim il Sung, those that GRAB POWER FROM THE GREAT UNWASHED, SET THEMSELVES UP AS ELITES, AND REPLACE CONSUMER CHOICE WITH HAND-OUTS CONTROLLED BY THEM??

I am constantly baffled by the new "progressive", ready, willing and able to hand over their family keys to politicians and their cronies; in this case, the Democratic Party and its union masters.

Unbelievable.

The point is that when Scott Walker and several other GOP governors ran for office, they all ran on jobs and job creation. That is why people gave them their precious vote. Because they needed jobs. No where ever once did they run on destroying what few good jobs were left. Had they told the truth they never would have been elected. They knew that. So they ran on the ever popular job creation thing knowing all along that this was NOT the real plan. We know this by the dizzying speed in which they shifted gears into their real ideas. It wouldn't fly before they got elected and Wisconsin has shown them that it won't fly now either. All states beware. There are forces at work behind the scenes that want to take away everything you thought that you had. The won't be happy until they have EVERYTHING.

It is strange that Walker would be stating that there is big money involved in this recall effort, while being not in Wisconsin when the signatures are delivered, but in NYC (home of the Koch brothers) attending a $2500 a plate fundraiser for his recall campaign.
It seems that if Walker was truly trying to prove that he is his own man, and that these acts he committed were truly, by his thoughts, needed, then he would have shyed away from such events and money.
It seems that this is nothing but the extreme conservatives paying Walker for his attempts at destroying the traditional Democratic party base.

In Wisconsin it did - Wisconsin (was) what is called a compulsory Public Union state as established in 1959 - meaning if you worked for government you were forced to pay dues to the public unions.

The sickening part (as if that isn't enough) is that the public unions didn't have to represent workers - they would simply recieve a check from the State based on headcount and dues were deducted from a worker's paycheck......tax free of course.

Now, a public union must have a certification vote (gasp! I know!) And not suprisingly, most public unions were decertified by their own members last fall.

In some cases - the public union bosses had to call local government to find out the names and addresses of the people they supposedly represented - they never knew they existed........

Well, most of what you are stating is personal opinion based on a small amount of facts. From the Wisconsin State Journal..".All six state employee unions seeking official status under Gov. Scott Walker's restrictive new labor law won recertification elections Wednesday, according to the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission…".
It appears that being represented by a union is what they want.

Not one person was ever forced to join a public sector union in Wisconsin . . . ever. Many were required to pay their "fair share" of the costs of representing them. They got the raises we negotiated, they got the fringe benefits, they had the job protection. What they paid for that was always less than what members paid in dues.

And guess what . . . not one of those "fair share" folks . . . or employees who paid NOTHING in locals without "fair share", ever turned down a pay raise negotiated and paid for by their fellow employees. I wonder why.

A teacher from Wisconsin put it best:

"As a compulsory union state, where teachers are required to pay union dues as a condition of employment, the most I could hope for was a "fair share" membership, where the union refunded me a small portion of the money that was taken from my paycheck that lawyers have deemed "un-chargeable."

Every September, after lengthy, bureaucratic and unadvertised hurdles, I would file my certified letter to try to withdraw my union membership. Then, the union would proceed to drag its feet in issuing my small refund. I often wondered why this kind of burden would be put on an individual teacher like me. Shouldn't it be up to the organization to convince people and to sell its benefits to potential members afresh each year?

Why should I have to move mountains each fall to break ties with this group that I don't want to be a part of in the first place? Something seemed dreadfully wrong with that picture"
