Eli Manning Misses Giants Practice With Stomach Illness

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning missed part of Wednesday's practice session with an illness that coach Tom Coughlin called "a stomach bug, hopefully a 24-hour deal."

Manning was placed on the Giants' injury report for the first time this season as a limited participant in practice, though he missed the majority of it. The team is preparing to play the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday for the NFC championship.

"If there is one guy who can miss a practice Wednesday mentally, it's No. 10," guard Chris Snee said of Manning, who has had his best pro season. "He was probably in here on Monday and Tuesday looking at film."

Tight end Jake Ballard figured Manning headed right home to recuperate – and watch film.

"He's probably going to spend the rest of the day doing that," Ballard said.

Also limited Wednesday were defensive ends Justin Tuck (shoulder) and Osi Umenyiora (ankle, knee), cornerback Corey Webster (hamstring) and rookie linebacker Mark Herzlich (ankle).

Missing practice completely was running back Ahmad Bradshaw with a foot problem. Bradshaw frequently has sat out practices or been limited in recent weeks.

Ballard said it was apparent immediately Wednesday morning that Manning wasn't feeling well.

"You could tell he was hurting bad," Ballard said. "He usually toughs things out like that. You could tell he was dragging, and you don't like to see your Pro Bowl quarterback throwing up or feeling like that. Hopefully he's better tomorrow."

Snee wants to make sure of that, so he offered some help.

"I'm actually going to bring him some soup tomorrow," Snee said. "I'll do whatever it takes to make sure he is at full strength."

Some home cooking?

"Southern gumbo," Snee joked. "Or whatever they have in the cafeteria."

I'm a lifelong 49er fan and this is VERY bad news. The Giants are a classy organization who got to this point by playing smart and being tenacious. I do not want to win a game because their ship's captain is not feeling well. The best team deserves to win, period. Get better, Eli.

This is actually very bad news for the Giants and their fans.
If by tomorrow at this time the word out of Giants camp is that Eli is fine, then it doesn't amount to much and everyone can forget I said anything.
But if he's still sick all of tomorrow and misses another full day of practice, you can pretty much stick a fork in the Giants.
In fact if he's out tomorrow it might be better for New York if he doesn't even dress for the game on Sunday. How much can 49er fans brag about beating 2nd string QB Carr at home? Okay, they'll probably brag plenty, but who will take them seriously?
The worst case scenario for NY (yes, i realize we're still a long way from this): Mr Manning doesn't practice at all tomorrow followed by vague accounts that he's still not 100% the next day, followed by him starting Sunday and playing like the Eli of 2010, followed by David Carr mopping up the second half of an ugly game for the Giants.
Let's all pray for a New England victory in the early game Sunday. Can anyone stomach a battle of the Harbaugh brothers Super Bowl? If that happens and it's Baltimore vs San Fran I think all football fans will feel on Feb 5th like Eli Manning did today.

I think you are making a big deal out of a minor stomach ailment, Eli will be playing Sunday, no way he will miss the game, even if he misses practice again, there's no way they would consider starting Carr just yet, that's a decision that if had to make wouldn't happen probably until gameday. They play the late game Sunday, the last game of the weekend, he's got plenty of time to recuperate. Don't be screaming "FIRE" just yet.

Fire as in flames in the theater, or Fire as in coaching staff changes that will lead to a half decade of "rebuilding"?

Just to be clear about what I stated: I didn't say Mr Carr was likely to play at all only that it would be better for Giants fans if he did start rather than if the Eli Manning of 2010 (that's at least two turnovers) shows up.
No Giant fan will feel that badly if Carr plays the whole game and they lose. But if Eli plays and plays very badly it will be frustrating.
