Katy Perry 'The One That Got Away' Acoustic Version Released (LISTEN)

Posted: 01/18/12 08:16 AM ET

It seemed ironic when Katy Perry announced her divorce from Russell Brand so soon after releasing her new single, "The One That Got Away." Now, her re-release of the song seems anything but accidental.

Perry has released an acoustic version of the single, which drips with emotion that seems clearly more than just theatrics. Anguished, unfiltered and at times gasping, her vocals are set against the soft strumming of acoustic guitar and light percussion that keeps time but takes a back seat to what is perhaps her most raw track yet.

Meanwhile, Brand is pressing along with his new TV talk show, telling an audience of critics over the weekend that he was doing quite well these days.

"Are you asking because of recent events?," he asked a questioner inquiring about his emotional health. "You are making the mistake of seeing time as linear. The brilliant American author Kurt Vonnegut, he'll tell you that if you imagine reality as experienced simultaneously, events become redundant."

Are you afraid to tell me what YOUR favorite current pop musicians are so I can criticize them? Kinda whoosing out there aren't ya pal? You must be very embarrassed to say what pop musicians you like. They must be some weird underground group that nobody will ever hear on the radio or anywhere.

You need to relax...have a cookie...read a book...meditate.......I would like to continue this pointless exercise, but a wise person once told me that to argue with someone like yourself is to educate them....don't have the time....class dismissed....

Are you a professional PAID music critic? If not, then why would anyone care what YOU say? You're just some idiot bigmouth on the internet like everyone else, right?

If you dislike Katy's music so much, why are you spending YOUR time and effort typing up YOUR idiotic opinions on this Katy Perry thread? Shouldn't you be posting something about your favorite musicians on some other thread? What's your agenda, pal? Take a vacation from the Katy criticism. Nobody cares what you think about Katy or anyone else. Get a life.

This thread was intended for Katy Perry FANS, don't you think? Are you some sort of bitter failed pop musician who likes to criticize successful musicians because your band failed? That's kind of creepy and weird isn't it?

Wow ... all these ReallyNastyComments. I just had my first grandchild but I can remember as clear as day my first heartbreak and I was much older than she is ... my heart goes out to her ... she will heal and she will find love again but, right now, she doesn't realize that.

Lighten up people ... in the grand scheme of things she is still just a person who has feelings.

OH, I was married for, like, thirty minutes, and then divorced. It crushed me. My life is so full of pain and misery, and I need for people to understand my unique pain....

Good grief.

She is awful...it's like hearing a barking dog without the traffic noise to deaden the sound.

So who in the pop music genre do you think DOES have a good singing voice? Lady Gaga? Who?

Honestly, none come to mind right away. At least not how we're defining pop music.

Katy's sad songs like this one and "Thinking of You" kinda makes you want to help her out, don't they? Help her get over her past relationships and find her a new boyfriend or hubby as quickly as possible before she falls apart.

If I could, I'd like to tell Katy ... "there's "more fish in the sea" out there if you get out there and mingle! Just about everyone has been in relationships that went bad in the end. One of the fish you caught just jumped out of the boat so now you need to get a worm on a hook and reel in a new one. Just listen to Chrissie Hynde on this Pretenders song and get back out there in the dating game. Find someone a lot better this time."

Katy Perry ... wearing mom jeans and mom hair? You serious?

I think Katy is just smokin hot and cool looking in this video in her black mini-skirt, red leather outfit and sunglasses.

I like when Katy wears those 80s and 90s "euro pop" type outfits like Shirley Manson and other top female singers used to wear. In this video, Kylie Minogue wore cool looking clothes and was just ultra hot.

I like how Katy holds that long note in this acoustic version of the song at the 3:33 mark. Katy has some good pipes! I don't understand why some people say that Katy doesn't have as good of a singing voice as some other artists... like Lady Gaga.

Her voice gets messed up a little from overuse when she's on tour but that's normal for singers on long tours. Axl Rose could barely sing at all by the end of his old "Guns and Roses" tours. Same things happens to all the other rock singers like Kurt Cobain that sang in ways that were harmful to their vocal cords.

Katy probably needs to see a vocal cord ENT doctor on a regular basis and do all the drills she's supposed to do to keep her voice in optimal condition (as much as possible). Maybe a singing voice coach too. Those pipes that Katy has are way more valuable than her ta tas ... which just about everyone agrees are quite lovely. :)

Anyway, I hope Katy continues to make improvements with her singing voice and take care of those vocal cords so she sounds good 20+ years from now when she's Madonna's age and going on long tours. She needs to drink a lot of water everyday, eat good food and use those singer's throat sprays and non-drying pectin lozenges. She should stock up on them before she goes out of the country on tour.

really nice comment and I agree with you...the quality of Katy's voice is so very lovely. Head and shoulders above many singers of her day. Sometimes hard to pinpoint what it is that makes the sound captivating...in her case, (to me) it's that ineffable something, of heart and soul.

She hasn't become a sensation in the last two months, but its been a relatively fast ride to the top. Very tough to keep a voice in prime condition under those circumstances. Broadway singers experience a similar strain when performing long runs. It's a marathon on the vocal chords. That MTV Unplugged was just beautiful.

You said it before too, something about her being a ball of energy in the music industry. Yeah, a dynamo. A wonderful performer.

I just ran across this 22 year old singer about a week ago named Renee Olstead. THIS girl has a world class singing voice. No doubt.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WA-4iawLy9I

This girl is super hot looking like Katy is too ... always an plus for new musicians trying to make it big.

http://www.hollywoodpix.net/pictures/renee-olstead/renee-olstead-2011-golden-globes-party-/1086112409/77085

I tell you want, if she switched from singing jazzy, easy listening songs to pop music she might give Katy Perry and Lady Gaga some serious competition. Maybe she's a really good song writer like Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga and she could pull it off.

Renee could probably sing some of that "soft pop/rock" if she doesn't like that high energy techno sounding pop music like Katy and Gaga make. My parents have some old "Carpenters" CDs. I bet if Renee made some songs like those, she could become a huge star. That type of music is still somewhat popular. I bet my parents would like Renee's songs. They love that Vegas type music.

Anyway ... I think the world will know who Renee Olstead is before long.

I hate Gaga and all of them for that matter (they all sing the same song right) but logistically, there is no way she is more popular or successful that gaga. According to Forbes that Gaga cacophony made 64 mil #4 Katy did not crack the top 100 (in 2010, 2011 is not out yet). 64 million in single to Katy's 40 Mil. So no she is not more popular or more successful.
11:17 PM on 01/18/2012
You shouldn't h@te anyone...but going by dollars amount does not equal popularity. Katy had 5 #1's in a row from the same album. Her album, over a year and a half after its release, is selling as much as Gaga's 1/2 year old album though Gaga is slightly ahead ( due to selling it for .99 cents). Gaga had 4 flop singles in a row. Nobody cares about Gaga anymore. People adore Katy and she, as a result, is far far more popular than Gaga.
