General Motors Reclaims Title Of World's Top-Selling Automaker

DETROIT — General Motors Co. has retaken the title of world's top-selling automaker, selling just over 9 million cars and trucks across the globe.

The company said Thursday that it sold 9.03 million vehicles worldwide last year, up 7.6 percent from 2010. That's more than 1 million better than Japan's Toyota Motor Corp., which took the title away from GM in 2008.

GM had held the global sales crown for more than seven decades before losing it to Toyota, as GM's sales tanked while it headed toward financial ruin. In 2009, GM filed for bankruptcy protection, needing a U.S. government bailout to survive.

Now GM is profitable again and its vehicles are selling well across the globe. The company reported net income of $7.1 billion for the first three quarters of last year, and it is expected to add to that number when it reports fourth-quarter and full-year results in February.

In 2011, Germany's fast-growing Volkswagen AG took second place behind GM with record global sales of 8.16 million, up 14 percent from the year before. The French-Japanese alliance of Renault and Nissan was third, selling 8.03 million vehicles.

Toyota ended up finishing fourth in 2011 with 7.9 million vehicles sold. Its sales were hurt last year because the March earthquake in Japan slowed its factories, and dealers ran short of cars to sell. Toyota is aiming for a comeback and has forecast that it will sell 8.48 million vehicles in 2012.

Auto industry analysts predict a tight race this year between GM, Volkswagen, Toyota and the Nissan-Renault joint venture.

Some analysts have said that VW is the world's biggest automaker because GM's figures include vehicles made by its Wuling joint venture in China. Many don't count Wuling because GM doesn't have controlling interest in the company, but GM includes it in global sales figures.

Excluding Wuling, GM would have been topped by Volkswagen.

Being the world's top-selling automaker doesn't mean much for the bottom line. But GM retaking the title is an example of how far the company has come since its 2009 bankruptcy.

GM CEO Dan Akerson said last week that the company isn't that concerned about posting large sales numbers and is focused more on making money so it can reinvest in products and generate returns for shareholders. But he says strong sales can bring strong finances.

"You're not going to achieve the financial goals we want to achieve and have declining market share or declining numbers of units sold," he said. "So it's one indicator among many."

GM said its sales were up in all four of its regions: North America, Europe, South America and International Operations, which includes Asia. The Chevrolet brand led the way, selling a record 4.76 million vehicles across the world.

GM sold 640,000 more cars and trucks last year than it did in 2010, when it sold 8.39 million.

in fact if obama would not have given the banks cart blanch to come back and attack the home owners we would already be out of this and it would all be old news. Instead it just a reason to revisit during election time.

you can bet it wasnt obamas idea to save them it was his way to pay the unions back for funding his election, sure didn't see the gov. worrying about the small businesses that truly drive and put back money in the economy.

Listen to this. I don't know whether it's worthy of embarrassment or pride. My brother bought his daughter a brand new Pontiac for a graduation present. He's not a rich man, but he does want his daughter to feel that she commands as much family focus as the son. It was a real deal -- a genuine bargain -- because this is the last of Pontiac, ever, and if GM survives, GM promises to support it from a parts and maintenance standpoint. It was basically in honor of our father -- her beloved grandfather -- who extracted a lot from several Pontiac's in his lifetime. My niece is thrilled. I don't hold it against them, in fact, I'm sort of tickled, and I like to imagine that her Pontiac will hold its value as a collector's item. It might be a good investment from more than one angle.

Liberals hate seeing corporations getting subsidize but yet when GM took billions from the taxpayer they hail the idea a great move. This administration likes to continue to demonize the successful but don't mind subsidizing failure.

Honestly does that BS work for you?

Your side wanted to let GM die and unemploy all their workers and the workers who supply them.

Now they are coming back strong and you see that as a failure of this administration.

You people are too much. Do you have kids? Do you tell them these kinds of lies as well??

This is a good thing, it is not a good reason to try to beat on president Obama.

Sour grapes much

You remind me of when American automakers insisted that Americans only want large gas guzzling vehicles. They didn't ask me. You haven't the vaguest idea who I am, or our President, either. That's sad.

If Romney and the GOP had their way, GM wouldn't exist.

Kudos to the Prez. This would not have happened without his leadership. It would have been left to fail.

Yeah good luck with that one, maybe they could pay some money to the companys they put out of biz when the government took over in 09
05:01 PM on 01/19/2012
They've already been paying the US and Canada back starting nearly a year ago with a payment of $8.1 billion.

Of course facts need never intrude into the the right wing extremists' Foxland.

Please do some reading to determine where that money came from.
03:53 PM on 01/19/2012
But wait, Romney said that we needed to let GM fail - that this was the only right and sensible thing to do.

Ergo, just as clearly, if Romney had been President, this headline would never have happened.

One more win for Obama.

GM is doing well. If they continue to do well the stock price will increase, the gov't. will get back its investment and the overall US economy will improve a bit. Obamaphobes can't stand the prospect.

They'll simply claim that it was due to Reagan.

And Mitt wanted to do what he and his cronies do best; Strip the company like a chop shop and make money off of the parts, while everyone else got the shaft.
02:48 PM on 01/19/2012
what about all the stock holders etc who got the shaft? will they get paid back now?
03:55 PM on 01/19/2012
Nope - that's what a bankruptcy reorganization does - wipe out shareholder equity.

You gamble on a company, sometimes you win, sometimes you loose. No matter if GM had been bailed out or not, the shareholders were going to come away with $0. That's how capitalism works.

what about the suppliers they put out of business?

Not a chance or the suppliers who they put out of biz when they had the feds take over in 09

It's all Obamas fault, just like the extra $1000 in working poor peoples paychecks, health care for children, extended unemployment benefits to name a few.
The republicans managed to keep taxes low for the rich and name some post offices.

Built a few Reagan statues and started a couple of wars and let 1800 or so people die in New Orleans after Katrina and many more - don't sell the Gophers short on their many amazing accomplishments.
