When the news broke on Thursday morning that Rick Perry is dropping out of the race for the GOP presidential nomination prior to the South Carolina primary on Saturday, many on Twitter reacted with the same spirit that the Texas governor famously once said to a reporter: "Adios, mofo."
Going from the top of the Republican heap to dead last in the polls, behind even Stephen Colbert, Rick Perry has had a candidacy remarkable in its apparent lack of discipline. Entering the race by threatening violence against a government official? Check: Ben Barnake still probably doesn't want to set foot in Texas. Charges of outright bigotry? Check: See the controversial "Strong" ad. Displaying one of the most monstrous gaffes in debate history? ChecK: Perry either forgot his notes, didn't have a clear understanding of the issues, or... shoot, some third thing.
All in all, Rick Perry was less the GOP savior many hoped for and ended up being a laughingstock of a candidate. And when he announced that he's quitting (for real this time, not an Iowa false alarm), Twitter reacted accordingly.
Adios, Governor. Unless you live in Texas -- then have at him.
