South Carolina Polls Show Newt Gingrich Surging To Tie Mitt Romney

First Posted: 01/19/2012 12:35 pm Updated: 01/19/2012 2:26 pm

WASHINGTON -- Six new polls released on Thursday reveal a stunning surge of support for Newt Gingrich in South Carolina's Republican primary, following pundit accolades of his Monday night debate performance and a near-endorsement on Tuesday from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

The current polling snapshot now shows Gingrich and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney running essentially even among likely Republican primary voters, although polls differed on which candidate might be ahead. With events continuing to swirl, the ultimate outcome of Saturday's primary is now impossible to predict.

Some of the new data releases might be questionable if examined alone, but the consistency of the trend across all polls is undeniable. Since Monday, former House Speaker Gingrich has surged and eliminated what had been a double-digit Romney lead almost overnight. The six new polls -- all conducted since Monday -- all showed Romney and Gingrich leading the field and running within single digits of each other. The margins varied from a six-percentage-point Gingrich lead reported by Democrat-affiliated Public Policy Polling (PPP), to a two-point Romney edge found by the Politico poll conducted by The Tarrance Group, a Republican polling firm.

Previously, eight telephone telephone polls conducted all or in part between the New Hampshire primary and Monday night had shown Romney leading by margins ranging from 2 to 14 percentage points, with the lead appearing to increase as the week went on. The HuffPost Pollster chart estimate, based on all of these surveys, gave Romney a thirteen percentage point lead (34.4 percent to 21.2 percent).

Now, however, the new polls show the trend lines have converged. They show a virtual tie, 31.1 percent for Gingrich and 31.0 percent for Romney, with Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) running a distant third at 15.3 percent.

The trends would appear to favor Gingrich, given that support for conservative alternatives to Romney -- former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum (11.3 percent) and Texas Gov. Rick Perry (3.5 percent) -- was already fading.

Of course, these new polls do not yet reflect reactions to two big stories that broke on Thursday morning: Perry dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed Gingrich, and ABC News broadcast a "bombshell" interview with Marianne Gingrich, in which the ex-wife of the former speaker discusses details of their divorce. And Friday's political news will likely be dominated by yet another nationally televised debate among the remaining four candidates on Thursday night on CNN.

Polls conducted before primary elections are far more prone to error, even under ordinary circumstances, but the events now playing out in South Carolina are extraordinary. The combination of the recent volatility in voter preferences and the swirl of ongoing events means the current snapshot in time is likely to be just that. Voter preferences in South Carolina are still very much subject to change.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly called the Politico poll the "Politico/GWU Battleground poll." The poll was conducted not with GWU, but by The Tarrance Group.

Choices, choices:
So who do the South Carolinians go with?
There’s Newt, the only speaker of the house to be forced out through ethics violations, fined $300.000 and most of the charges levied on him were from his own party.
He has made all of the right dog whistle noises to appeal to the base, rich in racial animus and vilifying and dehumanizing the poor. (Always a popular  Read More...

The Republican establishment will SELECT who they want, NOT who GOP voters ELECT.

Why else did Ron Paul win the Iowa entrance AND exit polls, but managed to come in THIRD? In a race full of weird counting problems, late results, entire missing counties, changed results and an unsure outcome?

It has ever been thus.

If the GOP voters won't fall in line and just follow orders, the GOP establishment will CHANGE the votes, which is what a lot of observers think happened to Reagan when he challenged incumbent Ford.

Not too late. Get out and vote you Paul supporters!

It's Ron Paul who needs to get out- and got Third Party!

The GOP establishment will NEVER let him win.

Fox News constantly undermines Ron Paul, like slamming him all the time and selectively editing video tape to take away his applause. MSNBC and CNN treat Ron Paul MUCH better than GOP Fox News.

And the proof is that the Iowa ENTRANCE polls were won by... Ron Paul.

The IOWA EXIT polls were won by... Ron Paul.

What happened in between?

Where are the missing Iowa counties?

Why did it take weeks for the GOP to find a result?

Why did they say they don't really know who won?

Was it because Ron Paul won?

It is over. Romney has been chosen by the GOP establishment. Newt may win SC but he is not the chosen one. The baggers just are not enough to defeat the chosen one.

All these posts concerning a candidates worth, huh? We aren't judging a contest here, we're voting how to take our nation forth and where we want to be in the near future. Don't we all agree our civil liberties, personal freedoms and privacy are most pressing? Jokes are easy, they're fun and easy to read. We can haggle over trivial personal offenses on each and every candidate, it won't win over any voters. Sticking to the issues that are important, in the long haul, will address what many readers inadvertently desire. In summary, grow up and vote Ron Paul!

These polls are pathetic. All they have to do is call people on Rush Limbaugh's mailing list to get these results.

Who Cares if Mitt releases his Tax Returns. People just want to know how much he makes and wish they had his money. It is a shame that people try an put down people that are successful and work hard. Why would you not want someone that is successful to turn this country around.
He is a loving husband, father, grandfather and a faithful christian. If everyone in the country was like him, this world would be a completely better place.

Maybe average, ordinary wage earners want to be able to trust that Mr. Romney understands their financial plight and don't give a rat's rear-end that he can procreate and looks outside his own person to some metaphysical deity for moral guidance. The thing about working hard to get that much money........well, that's just it. He doesn't work hard for a large portion of his income, not to mention that it is not taxed at all, or if it is, it is taxed at a much lower rate than what you or I have to pay. I don't know about you, but my current inner self would feel a heck of a lot of guilt if I destroyed jobs and earned income by doing nothing. Better place? Really?

The WH must be celebrating. Either Newt or Mitt will get Obama re-elected. Both Newt & Mitt are unelectable losers.

I fear Romney much more.

He just might win, especially if world events turn bad (Straits of Hormuz closure by Iran, anyone?).

Newt? Not so much.......

Iran should be a winner for him. He listens to his military advisers - the Iranian "navy" goes to the bottom of the sea - no additional land troops deployed - end of story. It probably won't come to that anyhow as Iran is actually controllable. World events should not ding him.

The one thing that Obama will do is use military strength to keep the straits open. Why do we give credence to security with the GOP? Roosevelt and Truman during WW2, Kennedy during the Cuban Crisis, Johnson during Vietnam, Obama with Bin Ladin, getting us out of Iraq. Now the Republicans: Reagan in Grenada and Iran Contra, Bush in Panama, Bush 2 in Iraq forgetting Afghanistan; Bush 2 with lies and deceit to get us into Iraq, and ignoring information about the possibility provided to him by the CIA that an air attack with planes into buildings possibility. So who is better in national security? Hint, it isn't the Republicans.

Lets see how the NEXT POLLS go - I betcha Romney takes back the lead
(might not be a big lead but will be in the lead back in first - thanks to Newt's Ex-wife story
there's also rumors that his ex-wife has been telling CNN MORE issues on Newt Gingrich corrupted marrige with her - so the more she tells the more Newt will go down- even with Romney's Tax return issue - Romney will take back the lead)

The Republican Party does not want either one of them to become the nominee, how sad is that.
