Tom Brady, Patriots Offense Look To Continue Scoring Assault Against Ravens

Patriots

First Posted: 01/19/12 04:31 PM ET Updated: 01/19/12 04:37 PM ET

After beating Houston 20-13 in the Divisional round, Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed proclaimed that "we're coming and they know it," in reference to the AFC Championship game Sunday at New England. Without question, Reed and his teammates will take solace in the fact that just two years ago, they went into Foxborough and destroyed the Patriots 33-14. In that game, Tom Brady threw for 154 yards, had a passer rating of 49.1 and the Ravens ran for 234 yards. "Their era is not over," Ray Rice said afterwards. "We'll always remember this win."

While the 2012 Ravens still feature many of the same players that pulled off that upset, the Patriots' personnel is rather different.

In that game, Brady didn't have the two-headed tight end monster of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez (who combined for 19 touches for 261 yards and four TDs versus Denver) in his arsenal. He instead threw seam routes to the vertically challenged Ben Watson and Chris Baker. With Wes Welker injured, the only other Patriots to catch a pass that day were Randy Moss, Sammy Morris, Julian Edelman (who plays more defense than offense now), Sam Aiken and Kevin Faulk.

Perhaps no player has been through more with the New England franchise than Faulk. Drafted out of LSU in 1999, the running back has spent his entire career as a Patriot. He has been both a starter and deep reserve. He has also won three Super Bowls and while two years may not seem like a long time, it feels light years away to him.

"There is a lot of turnover on our roster from 2010," Faulk told The Huffington Post.

"We have the resilience and will to keep playing no matter what goes on through the course of the game, but you can't judge this team based on what we've done so far."

Just as it did in 2010 when it sacked Brady three times, Baltimore will desperately try to apply pressure.

But is such a game plan realistic? With slower team speed, this Ravens defense has issues matching up against spread offenses. And, with Brady playing at an MVP-type level, New England is averaging over 40 points over its past four games.

The key for the Patriots -- beyond protecting Brady -- is to exploit the slower Raven linebackers in space. The Ravens will be forced to go man because he is the most accurate quarterback in the league right now. In that man coverage, we will see linebackers matched up against the two tight ends. And, while the record-breaking Gronkowski gets most of the ink, it is Hernandez who in some ways represents even more of a matchup nightmare.

Second-year man Hernandez has receiver-like quickness, great run-after-catch ability and -- as witnessed in the Denver game (five carries for 61 yards) -- is now a threat running the ball out of the backfield as well.

"He is a very diverse player and can do a lot of different things," Faulk says. "That was something that we have worked on for a couple weeks."

The question becomes: Can Joe Flacco -- who hasn't thrown for more than 176 yards in four games -- and the Baltimore offense keep pace?

Rice is their best player and Anquan Boldin is the durable possession receiver that most great teams have, but the wildcard and potential X-factor is rookie wideout Torrey Smith.

A pure downfield burner, Smith is the classic boom-or-bust playmaker that must play big for the Ravens. The challenge he will face come Sunday is more scheme than individual talent. With second-year cornerback Devin McCourty mired in a season-long sophomore slump, Bill Belichick will once again rely on zone defense across the field to try and prevent the deep strike to Smith.

The season-ending injury and loss of defensive end Andre Carter was a big blow for New England, but Mark Anderson has been very productive, registering two sacks as the starter against Denver last week. Flacco has the big arm that Tim Tebow lacks, but he is not a mobile guy in the pocket nor does he throw particularly well on the move.

Against the soft zone, there will be holes for Flacco to deliver the ball, leaving a big burden on Anderson to create havoc. Flacco will have to deliver accurate short and intermediate throws early on with the hope that doing so will open up the deep shots to Smith. Just as important will be the play of Pro Bowl nose tackle Vince Wilfork, whose sole mission is to limit the running room of Rice, something New England failed to do in 2010 when the diminutive back broke the first play from scrimmage for 83 yards and torched them for 60 minutes.

And so, it is Rice who it all comes back to. If he struggles to find his rhythm -- as he did in the Houston game just last week -- than so will Flacco, the play-action game and the entire Baltimore offense.

Perhaps only then would Rice's clear memory of 2010 likely fade just a bit.

The Ravens defense is not what it used to be. That being said, they're still a good team with good defense. However, I think NE's offense is strong enough to overcome BAL's defense. On top of that, Flacco just isn't that good. If the Pats can stop Ray Rice, it'll be a long day for the Ravens. That being said, the Ravens are good enough to beat the Pats. The game should be close either way.

Brady's on a roll and the Pats defense is healthier than they've been all season. Pats will take this one tomorrow!

If I'm not mistaken, the Patriots have only beaten one team who had a winning record at the time that they played the Patriots. That one team? The Broncos. All the other teams that they beat had losing records. The Ravens on the other hand? Strangely, all of their losses have come against teams with losing records. So far this year, they've beaten every team they've played that had a winning record at the time that they played them. I think this game may be a lot more interesting than pundits and Patriots fans are anticipating. We'll just have to wait and see.

Like most fans who watched both team's games last week (okay most of them) my first reaction was that the Pats would make quick work of the Ravens.
But on further reflection I can see some scenarios where the Ravens will make this a very tight game. For one, it's quite possible that New England asctually had too easy a time of it last week against Denver and even down the stretch of the regular season. The Baltimore defense, who are motivated for the dislike of the Pats in the first place, are the best D the Patriots have seen in several weeks.

As a Ravens fan, the biggest thing that I'm worried about is the Ravens making the mistake of playing prevent defense against the Pats, like they did against the Chargers. The Ravens are at their best when they're aggressive, and allowing short passes to prevent the long ball is a really bad game plan. It will likely be apparent in the first few plays how the game is going to turn out.

Prevent or aggressive, Brady will pick it apart if he knows what's coming. The Ravens know this and will likely come out with some very creatively masked defensive packages. The pass rush is often cited as the way to beat Brady, but I tend to think that the sacks you see when Brady is off his game are because the defense has him confused or fooled.

The Pats, for their part, are likely to be as creative on offense (players like Gronk and Hernandez give you them a lot of freedom) as the Ravens are on D. The no-huddle limits how dynamic a defense can be and Brady will spend ever second of the play-clock trying to get the Ravens to declare what defense they're in. It's going to be a chess math before every snap and a lot of fun to watch.

Many people seem to believe that because the Giants beat the Packers they're a lock to win the Superbowl. Not necessarily.
The Giants, Niners & Ravens are all good teams. But they're 2nd tier teams with 2nd tier QB's.

The Patriots are the only 1st tier elite team left. An elite team has to have an elite QB, like Brady, Brees or Rogers. Plus be able to go on a run of victories. NE has won their last 9 in a row, despite what many people say is a weak defence. They're playing their best football of the year right now. They're healthy. They've got the most experienced team, including coaching. And they play at home on Sunday.

Needless to say I like NE to win it all. And both home teams to win and cover on Sunday.

Give me a break, lol. It's obvious that you don't know much about football. An "elite" quarterback doesn't make for a "1st tier elite team", it takes an entire team to do that . The Giants, 49ers and Ravens are all better teams than the Patriots, and the best quarterbacks in the league have already been knocked out of the playoffs. Only someone who doesn't know much about football thinks that the quarterback carries as much weight as you do (and none of these guys are as good as Peyton Manning, and it's because Manning knows the game so unbelievably well. which is why he's able to instantly diagnose defensive schemes the way that he does). And, the Patriots have only beaten two teams with a winning record this entire season. The Ravens haven't lost yet this entire season to a team with a winning record. The Patriots' TEAM has been playing better as of late, so it could go either way, but my guess is that we're going to see the Ravens and the 49ers in the Super Bowl.

Why do you need to insult people who don't share your point of view? Do you think that discrediting someone personally will invalidate their opinion? I know a lot of conservatives think that way.

I didn`t say the Patriots were an elite team because of Brady. I said elite teams have 1st tier QB's. And the Patriots are both. The Packers and Saints were elite teams that got beaten. I don't expect that to happen again this year.
But I guess we`ll see.

I've always liked Eli more than Peyton. Eli's had to fight harder to get what comes naturally to Peyton. And it's made Eli a winner.
12:24 AM on 01/22/2012
I have to agree. He'll never be a top-3 QB, but as much as I hate to admit it he has proven us doubters wrong. He is an elite QB.

To be honest, as an EXTREME Pats fan, I am as nervous as a tart in church. I want to see the Pats roll over the Ravens and into the Superbowl in Indiana where they will face the Giants in a rematch. I want Tom & team to beat the bejesus out of the Giants. But first things first......let the Ravens fall foul victim to the Pats...

Brady can be rattled I believe
Although if our Ravens can't contain those two tight ends, and Rice can't get started, it will be a long cold day
Go Ravens!!!

I'm looking for Ray Rice to have a breakout game.... it will keep the ball out of Brady's hands, get him out of rhythm, and make him press too hard when he's on the field. Brady can get frustrated and he can lose it if things don't go his way. Rice won't be denied... plus he didn't play well against the Texans... he's due for a big game.

Ravens pass rush has been surpisingly poor. But this is the last shot at a super bowl realistically for aging defensive HOF'ers Ed Reed and the best MLB ever Ray Lewis. But the real question should be: Can mediocre Joe Flacco and the boring, sometimes impotent Ravens offense generate points and sufficient ball control to keep close in this game?
10:23 PM on 01/20/2012
The answer is "NO."
