Afghanistan Helicopter Crash: Marines Reportedly Killed

JENNIFER SINCO KELLEHER   01/20/12 08:06 PM ET   AP

HONOLULU — All six Marines killed in the crash of a U.S. helicopter in Afghanistan were based in Hawaii, a Hawaii congresswoman said Friday.

The CH-53D helicopter crashed Thursday in Afghanistan's southern province of Helmand.

U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said Friday she's saddened to hear of the deaths. Her spokeswoman, Ashley Nagaoka Boylan, said the congresswoman was notified Thursday evening that all six Marines were Hawaii-based.

"All who have called Hawaii home are part of our island ohana, and every loss like this touches us deeply," Hanabusa said in a statement, using the Hawaiian word for family.

The military hasn't identified those killed. But John Riddick, of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, said his son was among them.

Master Sgt. Travis Riddick, 40, grew up in Iowa and joined the Marines after graduating from Centerville High School in 1990. John Riddick said his son served three tours in Iraq and two in Afghanistan. This was to be his last tour.

The Vietnam War-era CH-53D is the same model as a helicopter that crashed and killed a Marine in a bay off Hawaii on March 29. An investigation later revealed mechanical failure caused that accident.

Thursday's crash was the deadliest in Afghanistan since August, when 30 American troops died after a Chinook helicopter was apparently shot down in Wardak province in the center of the country.

The cause of the latest crash is still being investigated, but a statement issued by the NATO international military coalition said there was no enemy activity in the area when it happened.

German Brig. Gen. Carsten Jacobson, a spokesman for the NATO coalition in Kabul, said officials were looking at a "technical fault" as the possible culprit.

"The helicopter is one of the safest forms of transport," Jacobson said. He said not only does it protect troops the danger of roadside bombs on the ground, but it is well-tested, well-proven way to travel.

"The loss of the six U.S. Marines in yesterday's helicopter crash in Afghanistan comes as tragic news for our island community and our nation," U.S. Rep. Mazie K. Hirono, of Hawaii, said in a statement. "We owe them and all of our brave servicemen and women a debt of gratitude for their dedication to our country."

In 2005, the same base lost 27 Marines when a CH-53E Super Stallion deployed to Iraq crashed during a desert sandstorm. Altogether, 30 Marines and a Navy medic were killed in that crash.

CH-53D Sea Stallion helicopters were first used in the 1960s, and the Marine Corps flew them in the Vietnam War.

All Sea Stallions still used operationally are stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay. The military plans to replace them with the MV-22 Osprey.

What we are seeing is the immorality, utter stupidity and futility of "preemptive war". Just for a moment, imagine your outrage if your son, brother, father, uncle was killed by their neighbor claiming an act of "preemptive self defense". Would you buy it?

"When people speak to you about a preventive war, you tell them to go and fight it. After my experience, I have come to hate war. War settles nothing."~Dwight D. Eisenhower

Second, to have a war, to invade another country, to kill thousands of innocents and convince the American public that we can do this while giving the public a TAX BREAK sickens me.

The public is not involved because they have been asked to sacrifice nothing! They are detached - they do not see the body bags, hear nightly of the battles, the losses, the hardships - no the public is busy complaining about how they've been "Taxed Enough Already". Give me a break!

Want to have a war? PAY FOR IT! Raise EVERYONE'S taxes. Have all Americans shoulder the burden! Pass a law that ALL wars must be financed by increased taxes, specifically called a WAR TAX! Include full benefits for returning veterans in all financing! Then, see how quickly we give up fighting unnecessary wars of choice!

My heart goes out to the families who have lost a brave and precious part of their family. I am a vet and I can say this for sure, not all who are in or were in the military were trained to kill for our country, but we all were trained to die for our country. My heart breaks every time I hear of an American who gave his life, whether I agree with the war or not. Politics be damned at this point.

I love how they're spinning it that it could have been mechanical failure, and not the result of combat. We're all supposed to be OK with deaths as long as its not during combat? Please. What a senseless, tragic way to go.

SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF WORLD WAR III

Our sons and daughters serve in harm’s way
To defend our way of life.
Some are students, some grandparents
Many a husband or wife.

They face great odds without complaint
Gambling life and limb for little pay.
So far away from all they love
Fight our soldiers for whom we pray.

The plotters and planners of America's doom
Pledge to murder and maim all they can.
From early childhood they are taught
To kill is to become a man.

They exploit their young as weapons of choice
Teaching in heaven, virgins will await.
Destroying lives along with their own
To learn of their falsehoods too late.

The fearful cry we must submit
And find a way to soothe them.
Where defenders worry if we stand down
The future for America is grim.

Now's not the time to fight one another
Or kiss our enemy's cheek.
All through history it remains the same
The strong enslave the weak.

May God continue to bless America
Refusing evil, the upper hand.
It's up to us to stay resolute
Defending the liberty of Man.

Good Gawd, Listen my friend, I want you to go over and spend some time being a man on the other side for one year, then come back and write your poetry my dear. Otherwise the sound of your words is not much better than a few big black birds. Gag Me before I have to hear another one, Tombo.

I don't believe a mechanical failure caused this helicopter to go down; just like I didn't believe the excuse for Tillman's death. Much is going on in this war that is hidden from public view. If you want an end to the lies, the secrecy, the drone wars, this war and you want to prevent a disastrous war with Iran....VOTE RON PAUL, for God's sakes, don't risk any more lives!

It's a shame anyone has to die in Afghanistan. How much do contractors and arms dealers make on this useless war? How much do politicians in Congress make in kickbacks?

God bless the good men who tragically lost their lives in this crash. They were there to do a job to rid Afghanistan of people intent on destroying our way of life and the lives of the peaceful people of Afghanistan, the vast majority of whom just want peace and to get on with their lives.
05:40 PM on 01/20/2012
The best way to help the people of Afghanistan is to stop occupying their country. No one is trying to destroy our way of life. You must be listening to Military Industrial Complex propaganda.

The "Surge" in Afghanistan (2/3rds of the servicemen/women that have died in Afghanistan have died since the 2009 "Surge") is to keep the Taliban out of the Logar Province and to protect the Chinese investment in the largest untapped mineral deposits in the world. The Soviets discovered these deposits of copper., zinc and lithium (that's why they invaded in '79). The Soviets sold the Chinese the mineral reports and the Chinese bought the rights from Karzai and "friends" for $30 million. Russia gets 20% of the expected 1 trillion in copper, zinc and lithium. The first investment was a Hesco Barrier arround the etire perimeter. Hesco once US now HQed in Dubai, Singapore and China makes millions in Net profits from their Hesco Barriers and Razor wire. From the air the Hesco Barrier looks like the Great Wall of China. Someday the citizenry of the US will wake up and realize.
"Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no legitimate allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people."
----Theodore Roosevelt
The invisible government is dividing the US citizenry in the simple gambit of divide and conquer. Lincoln said it best "A house divided can not stand."

So true...so much is clouded by those that really pull the strings...Koch brothers, Sorros, Buffet, T Boone Pickens. Keystone pipeline DOA since 2009 when Warren Buffet's Birkshire Hathaway bought BNSF railroad the transporter of Canadian oil (US #1 supplier). Who profits with the death of Keystone? Not the environmentalists, the oil still comes along with gasoline and hazardous materials on mile long freight trains through major cities that run on a 2nd world rail systems. Freight train derailments are a monthly occurrence. Check out Birkshire Hathaway's stock over the last month. Also Buffet's I don't pay enough taxes...his company Birkshire Hathaway owes $1 Billion in back taxes since 2002. Bing, Michael Taylor former vice president of Monsanto, now Food Safety Czar at the FDA, on his appointment, Sorros increased his hedge fund position in Monsanto by 30% and bought 900,000 shares of Monsanto. Monsanto's GMO products have been fast tracked by the FDA until their GMO corn was found to cause organ failure and is banned everwhere except the US. The invisble government controls our politicians as politician's wealth grows 3 fold while the US citizens declines. Their strategy is that of magicians...keep our attention on dividing the country while they take over.
Machiavelli would be proud.

Your comment..."insanity, and I have always grown a garden...last year all heirloom....thankyou for your service....my cousin died in Viet Nam in `68 and that is when my great grand dad told me we would be drilling for oil there and buying things from them soon enough...he was heart broken at `92 to lose my cousin...he swore all wars were for the bankers."
Unfortunately your great grandad was right. My dad Scots-Irish US Army '39-'60 OSS my mom...French Jew born in Saigon, they met in '45 fighting with Ho Chi Minh against the French&Japanese. My dad kept me out of Việt Nam but he and my mom approved of me, a Ranger Pathfinder, being delivered out of Udorn, Thailand RTAFB for US asset (downed pilots) extraction in Laos. I would tell the pilots about my parents while leading them to safety. As they entered Thailand I would vanish back into the jungle and say "go home to your family I may not come get you again."
