Heat Beat Lakers, 98-87: LeBron James Overcomes Illness And Kobe Bryant (VIDEO)

By TIM REYNOLDS   01/19/12 10:49 PM ET   AP

MIAMI -- LeBron James shook off flu-like symptoms to score 31 points, Chris Bosh scored 15 and the Miami Heat won their second straight, topping the Los Angeles Lakers 98-87 on Thursday night.

Shane Battier scored 11 and Mario Chalmers finished with 10 for Miami. James was sent home from the team's shootaround practice earlier in the day to rest, and finished with eight rebounds and eight assists to go with 12 for 27 shooting.

Pau Gasol scored a season-high 26 for the Lakers, Kobe Bryant scored 24 and Andrew Bynum finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Miami moved to 5-0 this season without Dwyane Wade, who missed his second straight game with a sprained right ankle. He missed three games earlier this season with left foot soreness.

Bryant put together a great late run to attempt a comeback, banking in a 3-pointer and following that seconds later with a steal and transition dunk that got the Lakers within 94-84 with 2 minutes left. But Derek Fisher's 3-point try on the next Los Angeles possession hit the front of the rim, Udonis Haslem controlled the rebound and James made a 15-foot runner to seal the outcome.

It was the first time James had gone against his former coach in Cleveland, Lakers' boss Mike Brown. At the Lakers' shootaround practice Thursday afternoon Brown said he and James had not spoken in advance of this game and didn't know if they would – but James made sure they did, running over to the Los Angeles bench and grabbing his former coach for a long embrace and a few words.

Brown was asked before the game if going against James would bring out sentimental memories of their time in Cleveland together.

"I had a great time coaching LeBron," Brown said. "I wouldn't be in this suit if it wasn't for him."

James showed no signs of illness. In fact, he apparently felt good enough to take on two teams – the Lakers ... and the Miami Marlins. James' momentum carried him over the sideline across from the Lakers' bench in the first half, nearly knocking over none other than Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, who escaped the collision with the 265-pound two-time MVP unscathed.

Loria spent most of the next few minutes laughing.

Meanwhile, the Lakers had very little to laugh about.

They shot 31 percent in the first half, their lowest output for any half this season. Bryant had as many field goals in the opening 24 minutes (one, on eight shots) as Heat forward Eddy Curry (1 for 1), who got his first NBA action since December 2009 when he checked in late in the first quarter for a 2 1/2-minute stint in which he made a basket, grabbed a rebound, was charged with a turnover and got a pair of loud ovations from a sellout crowd.

Curry returned for another stretch to start the fourth quarter, finishing his night with six points and three rebounds in six minutes. Curry said earlier Thursday that he lost about 65 pounds to get ready for his comeback, more than half of that since the start of Heat training camp in December.

"He gave us good minutes, good energy," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said during a televised in-game interview. "He's done a lot to get to this point. We're all very proud of him."

Miami's lead was 52-37 at the half, buoyed by eight 3-pointers – more than the Heat attempted in two December games – and a sizzling defensive start where the Lakers were forced into missing 18 of their first 24 shots. Over a 51-minute stretch going back to late in the first half of Tuesday's game against San Antonio, the Heat had outscored the Spurs and Lakers by a whopping 137-83 margin.

There was no second-half let-up, either. James scored nine points and Bosh was 4 for 4 from the floor in the third quarter, and even with the Lakers shooting 56 percent in the period Miami pushed its lead out to 77-56 entering the fourth.

NOTES: Bryant passed Bill Russell (40,726) for 21st on the league's all-time minutes played list. Next up: Michael Jordan (41,011). At his current pace, Bryant should become No. 5 on the NBA's career lists in points (passing Shaquille O'Neal) and free throws made (passing Jerry West) before the All-Star break. ... Ludacris was among the celebrities in the crowd. ... The Heat wore new all-black alternate uniforms, giving the Lakers the chance to wear their home gold on the road. ... Magic Johnson sat with Heat president Pat Riley for the second straight game. ... Gasol's previous season-best was 22. He hadn't scored 20 in any of his last nine games.

Impressive win, especially w/o D-Wade in the line up.

Congrats to the Heat for winning a regular season game. Too bad they won't be able to do it when it really counts.

As for my Lakers, we'll be back. We always are, unlike the rest of you who root for teams who win a championship once every century (if that.)

Ooh, you choose teams that win, good for you!

You had zero to do with any of those championships.

Excuse me, I need to run away from this mob of Laker "fans" running away from their team now that they're mediocre again.

Your comment receives the "dumbest comment" of the day. Of course nobody on here plays for the team but don't mean we still don't consider them "ours."

Don't just run away from Laker fans... I wish you would run away period. SMH

Kobe's wrist injury is not real. It is only a distraction to his divorce in which he will loose millions and be criticized by the media..once again.

Keeping his divorce out of focus not only continues to maintain his repaired image intact (after raping a woman) but it also keeps his ex wife and children safe from those fans who will blame the divorce (his wife) for Kobe's lack of play and may attempt to retaliate against her. They can instead blame it on a bad wrist, and leave his ex wife and kids alone.

Nontheless, Lakers are done.

I think its real. When you shoot as much as he does your wrist is bound to hurt.

Somebody needs to come and wipe up that purple and gold poop off the court we got another home game on Sat. Unlike the Lakers these guys (PHI) will be worthy opponents.

I watch games like this and become even more confused about Lebron's disappearing act in the last few games of the Finals. This guy can go to the hole any time he wants. He either gets fouled or he makes the shot. But last year he stood at the top of the three point line, never moving and passing the ball like a hot potato when it came his way. I don't get it.

I think he let the pressure get to him. I think they knew it was theirs for the taking and they screwed up under pressure. It doesn't make him a failure, just human.
04:34 PM on 01/20/2012
I think he's the most talented player I've ever seen. But the way he punked out in the Finals last year was just stunning. And it happened over the course of three games. I guess I'm disappointed that someone with an unprecedented combination of size, athleticism and basketball skills, has so little heart. It's unfortunate. This guy would be a lot more fun to watch if he had the killer instincts of a Michael Jordan or Magic Johnson.

As Steve Kerr said, wtf was Mike Brown doing keeping his starters in all the way with Orlando looming the next night? Hmmm, whose decision was that?

Hey, what do you know, the Lakers trail by 17 at the half. Who could have possibly seen that coming? But hey, what do we fans know about basketball?

I was upset but never cried when they lost. I did put on my Heat shorts and went down to the court and whooped some arse to vent my frustration. The funny thing is I couldn't find anyone one that would admit to being a Maverick fan. Every one knows the Heat beat themselves with the help of the refs. Lebron and Wade got hit with charging calls every time they stepped into the paint and how could we forget about the phantom loose ball fouls on Miami. The NBA had an imperative to see Miami lose to extend the money making drama going into the CBA. Thats sports business 101 for you novice anti-fan.

It's kind of annoying when sports commentators or writers lead with, "he fought off flu-like symptoms, and still scored 31 points". That's their job...I fight off flu-like symptoms the entire winter and can still make 150 copies. Do I get a pat on the back, no!

He only plays 3 quarters per game, and only plays regular season games! he usless in the fourth quarter, and in the playoffs! He can have the regular season MVP, but he'll never get the finals MVP!

He usually only has to play 3 quarters a game. He isn't useless in the 4th quarter, he had a bad series in the finals. He was incredible in the fourth quarter in the first two series of those playoffs when Wade was stinking the joint out.

Seeing as how he is only 27 and hitting his athletic peak, I'm sure he has many opportunities to win a few rings and MVPs before he retires. He didn't walk into the league with a top 5 all time centre or on a team that draws talent like the Lakers. He is the greatest player in the game today, and with the team he has now, its a matter of time before they win championships.

IF you asked GMs if they'd rather have Rose or James, I bet the majority would go with James. Kobe doesn't even enter this discussion.
12:01 PM on 01/20/2012
Really amazings stats from him on the night, showed us why he is a class apart from kobe at the moment. I would not be crowning him MVP just yet though, i feel he still faces stiff competition from durant and rose

Durant is an amazing player, but he's a scoring machine. I'd say he's more like Kobe, scores a lot of points and is a force on both ends of the floor, but doesn't put out as much over a number of categories.

Rose is close, and I see Rose and LeBron fighting for the MVP for the next 5 seasons. Rose is the heart of his team as much as LeBron is the force of his. I think Rose could take the award from James because James has the Wade downgrade on his record. However, he is the heart, force and best player on this team.

Yeah, LeBron has Wade, but with Wade on the bench, I think everyone is getting a refresher on just how great James is. You could argue that in some ways the team is better without Wade, just in the sense of flow. Obviously talent wise, you can't discount having Wade on your team. They just seem to play smoothly without him.
