Modern Art Sandwiches: Mondrian, Pollock And More (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 01/20/2012 9:08 am Updated: 01/24/2012 11:53 am

If you google "sandwich art," tons of images of expertly-designed sandwiches appear -- everything from a Spongebob Squarehead sandwich to Hello Kitty in bread form. Artist Brittany Powell interpreted "sandwich art" literally; she replicated famous artists' styles by using a slice of bread and some common sandwich ingredients. Powell and former classmate Tae Kitakata started Low-Commitment Projects at the beginning of 2012 -- each Monday they publish a new post on their blog. Here's how they describe their low-commitment venture:

Low-Commitment Projects provides us a chance to share concepts and schemes without a huge outlay of time, energy, or money. These ventures are like the materialization of mental sketches; there's minimal risk because they're quick.

"Sandwich Artist" is one of these projects. It's edible art, literally.

cool but better use of negative space would probably make for yummier sandwiches

I would have done Foucault and just wrote on the plate ... Ce n'est pas un sandwich.

Then I could have a sandwich I'd actually like to eat.

Lovely and clever! Please correct the misspelling of Pollock's name...the author should know...it is an article about modern art!

You DARE call those disasters 'sandwiches'? I would refer to them as culinary calamities! Now who is in the mood for some chopped liver éclairs?

Liked the Christo - pretty much sums up what is considered art. The Pollock makes me want to send it back and ask for something not prepared by someone with the Consumption.

Too easy; the Mondrian is, hands down, the best. Pollack was not right; not nearly enough chaos.
I'll add that O'Keefe's..should have had a spot of turqoise allowing how difficult it would be to get a cow skull on a sammy.
I wonder if these young enterpreneurs have EVER seen the tomato soup can of Warhol(sp?). Can you imagine what the original is worth? Bolivia basically.

anyway..fun stuff and since Wonderbread filed for bankruptsy..hey...and whole new use for white break as canvas :-)

I must make a grilled cheese and get Jesus's image on it..

I never understood why so many people like the Mondrian style art. Personally, I find it boring and uninspiring. To each their own, I suppose.

D'accord. Rectangles, and squares with a smatter of colored lines. Yet, I do NOT know his early work. I know Picasso changed 180 degrees when he entered cubism. Maybe I'll g**gle Mondrian and see if he did the same thing for 60 years or IF he had another "period", that I might find more interesting. Hey La Elle.. I'll get back to you later..okay..maybe with a link...caveat, if he never changed I will NOT return to comment. Fair?

Love the clean graphics.. the color blocking. I'm always energized with I look at a Mondrian. But, to each his own. Damien Hirst? My niece does better work... really.

La Elle..I just (30 min. after my reply below)..viewed on-line Piet Mondian's earlier works. The landscapes and beautiful (nothing mathematical or geometric)..a quote: .."He focused on a few select subjects: simple farmyard scenes, cow studies, and studies of the long, low, steep-roofed farmhouses characteristic of the region.4 These remarkable oil sketches and watercolors bring out the formal structure of their subjects, rather than their anecdotal or picturesque possibilities. The farmyard views are spare in incident, and are placed in a close, frontal relationship to the viewer. Also, find Moulin Au Soleil, 1908..B E A utiful.

I will have to check them out. Personally, I'm a big fan of Art Nouveau and early cubism. Tamara de Lempicka's Femme a Guitare is one of my favorites!
