Megan Mullally is everywhere on television these days. She currently has recurring roles on both "Happy Endings," as Penny's flighty mother, and "Parks & Recreation," as Ron's manipulative second wife. She's a regular cast member on the kooky Adult Swim series "Childrens Hospital" and has been added to the cast of Fox's "Breaking In" for its second season. How she found time to play Ava's rival Shayna on "Up All Night" (Thu., 9:30 p.m. EST on NBC) is a complete mystery.
In the episode, Reagan and Ava are shocked to find that Shayna has been stealing their show ideas and getting on the air before her, so they decide to confront her about it. But Ava has a blind spot for Shayna, as she was the one who helped her lose weight and find herself as a regular guest on "Ava," before she broke out and went solo.
Their first encounter doesn't go well, with Shayna smoothing things over with both women by treating them to dinner at a fancy restaurant, and then turning around and stealing their next show idea. So Reagan takes the more direct approach, confronting Shayna outside her studio and quite simply making her stop and not think of this through show business eyes, but rather through the eyes of someone Ava once considered a dear friend.
The ploy worked, and Shayna came on Ava's show in a surprise cameo to make nice and maybe usher in a new era of cooperation and friendliness between the two shows. It certainly leaves the door open for Mullally to stop by for more guest appearances if she finds the time in her crazy schedule.
"Up All Night" enjoys its new night and time on Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. EST on NBC.
