'The Normal Heart': Alec Baldwin, Julia Roberts; Latest Stars To Join Gay Dramas

Alec Baldwin and Julia Roberts have signed on to star in "The Normal Heart," a big screen adaptation of the Tony-winning stage show about the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film, being put together by "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy, follows the rise of the disease in the 1980s, when it spread rapidly through New York's gay community. An autobiographical tale written by Larry Kramer, the play debuted off-Broadway in 1985, was revived in 2004 in Los Angeles and London, and debuted on Broadway in 2011.

Mark Ruffalo, who had already signed on to star, will play Ned Weeks, who sounds the alarm about the epidemic in its early days. Baldwin will play his brother, while Roberts will play the doctor who understands the seriousness of the mystery sickness.

"White Collar" star Matt Bomer and "The Big Bang Theory" Emmy-winner Jim Parsons have also signed on; Bomer will play Weeks' journalist boyfriend, while Parsons, who appeared in the Broadway version, will play a southern gay activist.

The Broadway production won Best Revival, as well as Best Performance awards for Ellen Barkin and John Benjamin Hickey. Barkin played the role that Roberts will be taking on on the big screen.

This is the latest in a growing series of star-studded projects that tackle quite directly issues dealing with the gay community and the discrimination it often faces. Dustin Lance Black wrote the play "8," a stage dramatization of the California trial that overturned gay marriage ban Proposition 8; a staging in New York featured Morgan Freeman, Ellen Barkin, Anthony Edwards, Bradley Whitford, John Lithgow, Cheyenne Jackson, Rob Reiner and a number of other stars. Now, a Los Angeles-set staging featuring George Clooney, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jane Lynch, Matthew Morrison, Rob Reiner, Martin Sheen and George Takei is set to bow in March.

There will be various national performances happening throughout the year, as well.

Murphy, meanwhile, has been at the forefront of bringing issues of gay equality into the national conversation; his teen musical "Glee" features several gay characters and story lines, and "American Horror Story" tackles those subjects as well.

Leonardo DiCaprio starred as former FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover in Clint Eastwood's biopic "J. Edgar" this fall; along with tackling his long, controversial reign as America's top cop, the film also delved into Hoover's alleged homosexual relationship with top assistant Clyde Tolson.

Michael Douglas will star in Steven Soderbergh's Liberace biopic for HBO, in which Matt Damon will play his longtime partner. Meanwhile, Christopher Plummer won a Golden Globe and is the front runner for an Oscar for his turn in "Beginners" as a gay man who comes out of the closet in his 70s.

Baldwin has plenty of stage experience; he earned a Tony nomination for his turn as Stanley Kowalski in the 1995 staging of "A Streetcar Named Desire," as well as an Emmy nomination for the televised production. He's also starred in "Macbeth" at the Public theater; led the cast in a 2004 revival of "Twentieth Century"; and featured in a Long Island-staged version of "Equus, amongst other roles. He'll also star in the big screen adaptation of the musical "Rock of Ages."

Roberts starred in Murphy's 2010 film "Eat Pray Love."

This is another big screen move for Bomer, who also co-stars in Steven Soderbergh's upcoming male stripper film, "Magic Mike."

I just hope this doesn't become another case of stars overshadowing the work.

I know what you mean. Once I see 3 really big names(Julia Roberts, Alec Baldwin, MarkRufallo)....I get worried if it is one of those star packed films that completely suck. Hopefully this is not the case because I like these 3.

Criminal Minds should do the story. I on television. Solve the Kennedy Conspiracy Theory or not? Believe it or not so just declare it a fiction from the start. A 50 years later anniversary special with a new fictional twist. Start with the sheet they have in the Smithsonian Institute. This evidence was collected by an undercover or off duty officer that spoke to Snookie.
What if a three year old child was witness to the assassination of JFK but does not recall the event until 48 years later when she hears the words Man down, man down on Call of Duty.

Buy my version. A film, undeveloped and still in the movie camera, is processed and shows the missing portion of the Z. film.

The film comes to light after all this time because the man who took it brought it home, and was hit in a car crash. He lived on all these years with no memory of being in Dallas.

What happens to the film? Who ends up with it? And best of all, what does it show?

Why would Juila Roberts lower herself to act with Baldwin? She doesn't need to be around that clod.

I wish Hollywood would cast actual gay actors in these lead parts- Rupert Everret would make a great Liberace!

Anyone who lived through this knows. I remember flying to Florida in 81 or 82 and reading in Rolling Stone about this strange new disease that seemed to be killing off gay men. They had just named it AIDS. Seek out Mapplethorpe's bio by Patricia Morrisroe. Super compelling, beautiful and heartbreaking book. It's overwhelming to realize the many, many lives that were cut short, the devastation to families and loved ones by the cruelty of AIDS and what an impact it had on the creative community.

I hadn't imagined Dr. Emma Brookner as a goddess who tends to throw her head back, flash an impossibly huge smile and laugh raucously. It should be interesting.

It's been a long time for such a film....it was 1990 that "Longtime Companion" was shown in theaters as a major film about AIDS, with Bruce Davison among others, he was nom for Best Supporting Actor at Acad'y Awards that season. May Hollywood come out and it's many Gay actors be open and free about it all and further educate the public as well !

People sure do love to hate Julia Roberts.

There are still plenty out there who love her and will see her movies. I enjoy her acting and most of her movies and I'm excited to read that she will be a part of such an important project.

People have their hate on for Julia Roberts? With so much else happening in the world and so many actually bad people?

people love to hate those that have power and money for no apparent reason. AKA Julia Roberts. Why that woman is hired for her acting ability (or lack there of) is beyond me. But, then again Snooki made more money last year than most people make in 2 lifetimes.
Sad. Very sad.

I agree with you. There is not much reward for true talent these days.

"And The Band Played On" is a stunning movie that also tells of the beginning of the AIDS crisis. Mattew Modine, Richard Gere, Alan Alda and many others are in it. It should be required viewing for all. A certain movie provider still refuses to stream it, but I'm hoping they will, one day. Check it out. You'll thank me if you do.
