Giants Beat 49ers In Overtime To Reach Super Bowl 2012

Giants 49ers Super Bowl

JANIE McCAULEY   01/22/12 11:34 PM ET   AP

SAN FRANCISCO — The New York Giants have their own Super Bowl formula: in overtime and on the road.

And with Lawrence Tynes' foot.

Eli Manning directed one short, final drive and Tynes kicked a game-winning 31-yard field goal in overtime, sending the Giants to the Super Bowl with a 20-17 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC championship game on Sunday.

In another tight one in this decades-old postseason rivalry, both defenses made key stops before New York capitalized on another costly mistake by San Francisco.

Manning and the Giants (12-7) will face the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl on Feb. 5 in Indianapolis as 3 1/2-point underdogs. The last time the teams met for the NFL title, 2008, the Giants ended the Patriots' bid for a perfect season.

Tynes had a hand, er, foot in getting the Giants to that one, too, kicking the game-winning field goal in overtime at Green Bay.

Devin Thomas put the Giants in position by recovering his second fumble of the game after Jacquian Williams stripped the ball from fill-in return man Kyle Williams, who also fumbled earlier to set up a New York touchdown.

"It's my second NFC championship game, my second game-winner," Tynes said. "It's amazing. I had dreams about this last night. It was from 42, not 31, but I was so nervous today before the game just anticipating this kind of game. I'm usually pretty cool, but there was something about tonight where I knew I was going to have to make a kick. Hats off to Eli, offense, defense. Great win."

Manning went 32 of 58 for 316 yards and two touchdowns in his record fifth road playoff win, New York's fifth in a row overall and fifth out of six.

A 12-point underdog in the 2008 title game, the Giants battered Brady and got a late-minute TD pass from Manning to Plaxico Burress to win their third Super Bowl.

Five months after declaring he is in the same class as Tom Brady, Manning will get another chance to outdo Brady on the NFL's biggest stage. He outplayed Aaron Rodgers and the defending champion Packers last week, then fellow former No. 1 pick Alex Smith and upstart San Francisco the next.

Victor Cruz set the tone with eight of his 10 receptions in the first half and finished with 142 yards

"It's just been a tremendous effort by all of us, man," Cruz said. "We understand that any one of us can get hot at any moment. As long as we're all on the same page and just playing together, man, we've got a great group of guys."

Vernon Davis caught touchdown passes of 73 and 28 yards and wound up with three catches for 112 yards for the NFC West champions (14-4), who went from 6-10 a year ago to a contender and ended an eight-year playoff drought.

He scored the game-winner from 14 yards out last week as the 49ers stunned Drew Brees and the favored Saints 36-32.

Thirty years after their dynasty began under the late Bill Walsh, another former Stanford coach – Jim Harbaugh – got the 49ers this far with his "Who's got it better than us? No-body!" chant that caught on so well with the players and city.

"It will be a tough one. It will take a while to get over," Harbaugh said.

The only other time these two franchises faced off in the conference championship the game finished in memorable fashion. On Jan. 20, 1991, Roger Craig fumbled with the 49ers leading 13-12 late in the fourth quarter and the Giants went on to win 15-13 to deny San Francisco a chance at a third straight Super Bowl title. New York then beat the Bills to capture its second Super Bowl.

These teams met six times in the playoffs between the 1981 and `94 seasons with the winner going on to win the Super Bowl four times.

The Giants didn't win the game, the Niners lost it.

Rex Ryan and the Jets being reminded that talk is cheap. Teamwork and preparation will almost always lead to victory.

I came back to read some really nasty comments from some disgruntled 49ers fans. Also some very gracious comments. A lot of Monday morning quarterbacking and second guessing. I assume it's easier to do it from the comfort of your own home, rather than actually being out on the field in the rain and mud.

It was a great defensive game. I thought it would be a more high scoring game, but this was a defensive battle all the way. It was gritty, tough and exciting right to the end.

As I watched the two offenses struggle to get something going in OT, I remember saying out loud that it would come down to an interception, a fumble or maybe a kick off return. It would not be either offense that won the game. That's exactly how it played out.

Too bad for Kyle Williams. I read online that he is getting death threats! Now that is seriously crazy. He has been a big asset to the team, but on this day in this game, he made some critical mistakes.

For an offense as explosive as the 49ers to be held to seventeen points, had nothing to do with Kyle Williams. It's defense, people!

Give credit where credit is due.

I'm still feeling a little pain off that SAINTS loss to San Fran.... But now that the GIANTS have beaten the 49ers that pain is lingering away further....

Right now there's three Louisiana boys with the GIANTS... ELI out of New Orleans... Brandon Jacob out of Houma, Louisiana..... Corey Webster out of LSU and he was a Rookie when they beat New England short of that Perfect Record....

UP YOURS JERRY JONES.

Alot of people slamming Alex Smith, when in fact he did make two pretty spectacular throws to Vernan Davis, which btw is the only reliable weapon he's got. NY's D deserves alot of credit for shutting down the wide recievers but thats no excuse for Crabtree to be invisible for the entire game. This guy was supposed to be the next Jerry Rice when he was drafted. Truth is, he has neither the class nor the work ethic. All I've heard from him is excuses. Definately need to shop for recievers in the OS.
Kyle Williams what can I say? Whats the point? Had a bad game on an epic scale. Gonna be a long OS for him. Guess the pressure was to much. I kinda feel bad for him.
Plenty of blame to go around, except one area, the D. They were incredible as always.
The Niners had thier opportunities to win that game. They just didnt get it done.
Congrats to NY and thier fans.

The NFC championship game, like the AFC game, were pretty lousy football games. Both decided in the end by special teams mess ups. Disappointing.

As a Niner's fan I found myself watching my NFC championship pick (NY). How could I have possibly believed the Niners would get that far????

Now if we add some decent receivers and we just might have a mini-dynasty starting.

By the way, where was Brandon Jacobs? He was a non-factor.

I think the niners should get Peyton Manning, then they'd be an instant dynasty. Two rings, at the least

Well Eli Manning, you said you're in that elite status with Brady.... Now, show us what you got.
01:08 PM on 01/23/2012
Didn't he already beat Brady in an SB. At a time when the PATS were a much better team than this one? I think we are a long way past that question.
10:35 AM on 01/24/2012
He's already proven that he is an elite QB and if at this late in the game you have not seen what he's done this season alone, than you must be blind.

Kyle Williams handed the game to the Giants. Eli and the offense did absolutely nothing that game. The 49ers defense shut them down time and time again putting Eli into the ground more times then I could count. All for nothing because of Kyle Williams. Why they let him continue taking punt returns is beyond me. He was terrible. After the first flub that gave the Giants a touchdown, he kept calling fair catches when the nearest Giant was 20 yards away. Then in the most crucial moment of the game, he holds the balls loosely in one hand like a high school rookie.

No INT's thanks to the butter fingers and/or 49ers players running into each other.   He should have been intercepted at least 5 times that game.  There were opportunities for at least 10+.

BECAUSE IT WAS A DEFENSIVE GAME...DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS BRO.
01:02 PM on 01/23/2012
Not to mention time of possession was 39:36. Sorry Joe, but I don't know what game you watched. And the first game was not much different either. I know the G's lost but the numbers showe they outplayed the N's.
12:48 PM on 01/23/2012
Kyle Williams gave this game to the Giants. The 1st muff gave the Giants a TD...no way he should have been near that ball when it was bouncing down the field. The 2nd came in OT when the 49r's would have had the ball and 50 yards away from a game-winning FG. Kyle was carrying the ball like a loaf of bread and it was easily stripped. There were other times during the game when Kyle called for a fair catch even though he had opportunity to run. He got lucky during another punt when he made a diving catch. Why do that??? SF deserved to win this game and Giants got lucky.
12:52 PM on 01/23/2012
"SF deserved to win this game and Giants got lucky." hmmm...Even though they were horrible on third-dowm conversions and time of possesseion, and number of plays? Doesn't sound like luck to me. The better, more determined, most prepared team won the game. Much like they've been doing the last 5 weeks.

The Niners were'nt prepared. They put too much emphasis on what happend the first game. Can't argue with how well Coughlin prepares his teams.

Not at all. One rookie player made two huge mistakes. The niners could have easily won this game and were very well prepared. Cruz was just exceptional and not much anyone in the secondary could do about him. This was an OT win by a mere three points. Your comment makes no sense.
02:14 PM on 01/23/2012
Does the following sound like they were prepared to you? AlexSmith said it, "They just mixed it up a lot more, played a lot of two-high (safety) this game on first and second down, a lot of third down, especially those third-and-longs that we could not convert,"

Sounds to me like they were prepared to play the same team they played in the regular seasson.
02:42 PM on 01/23/2012
49ers were very well prepared. This game could have gone either way and the 49er defense was stellar. As was the Giants D. As a Niner fan, I'm disappointed, but it was still a great season. I applaud Eli Manning for getting up after all of those big hits. Good luck to the Giants and the NFC for the super bowl!
03:41 PM on 01/23/2012
Hey, I'm not rubbing it in or anything. I was just going on what Alex Smith said. See above. It just sounded like the N's were not expecting any new twists, but rather the same looks from a team that had been playing much better than when the 2 played earlier. I think we can agree, when it comes to playoffs you have to change things up and do things you haven't shown.
