Syria Sanctions Sought By Schumer, Gillibrand

Syria Sanctions

By MICHAEL GORMLEY   01/22/12 07:03 AM ET   AP

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The United States would hit Syria with sanctions against trade as long as it continues a violent crackdown on protesters under sanctions proposed by two U.S. senators.

The bill, to be released Sunday by Democratic Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, would require President Barack Obama to identify violators of human rights and call for reform and protection of pro-democracy demonstrators. It would also block any financial aid and property transactions in the United States involving Syrian leaders involved in the crackdown on protests.

The sanctions measure, to be proposed this week, would also prohibit the sale of high technology and telecommunications to Syria by any companies if the technology could be used for what the senators call censorship or human rights abuse. Visas to the United States would also be denied.

The 10-month uprising against Syrian President Bashar Assad has turned increasingly militarized and chaotic as more frustrated regime opponents and army defectors arm themselves and fight back against government forces. The conflict in Syria has marked the most serious challenge to Assad, who took over from his father in 2000. There have been three suicide bombings in the capital since late December for which the government blamed terrorists.

"Assad has brutally violated the human rights of his own people while killing thousands of Syrian citizens and fostering terrorism across his borders," Gillibrand said in a statement to The Associated Press. "This new bill is an important step to end the bloodshed by the Syrian government and provide the Syrian people with tools needed to take back their own country."

Schumer said Syria shows no desire to stop the bloodshed.

"If Syria won't willingly change its brutal approach and continues to violate the human rights of those seeking to exercise their voices, then we will do everything we can to send the strongest message possible to that nation's leadership that this behavior is beyond the pale and not without consequence," Schumer said.

"It will also ensure that no companies that do business with the United States facilitate this type of censorship."

Schumer said United Nation's estimates show more than 5,400 people have died, and detainees total 15,000 to 40,000.

Many believed Sen. Schumer worked solely for banksters.

The good news is that Israel through their stooges like Shumer and Obama are getting
more desperate to overthrow the legitimate government in Syria. Russia and China are
putting an effective firewall in place to stop them, that's good. The Chuckster's beady
little eyes are bugging out more than usual. Hypertension can be a wonderful thing
when applied properly. I thinks Chuckies campaign for a seat in the Knesset should
be ready to go. I'd be happy to give him a ride to the airport for a one way ticket to
Tel Aviv. We need leaders here who put America 1st, America 2nd and America 3rd.
Period.

Schumer is such garbage. Pro Government, corporately owned, and needs to be taken out of office for not working for the people as he was voted to do.

Regardless of what you think of Israel, Schumer is an American, born and raised.
Disgusting that you would insult someone who has dedicated his life to serving this country, just because he is jewish.

Sanctions against Syria for human rights violations may indeed be necessary but certainly not by the United States of America and certainly not by a U.S. senator as much responsible for the horrors unleashed in the middle east by our country as any other senator.

Surely they should be applied to Israel as well, including cutting off the $billions we provide it in unfettered aid. After all, Israel is belligerently, illegally and brutally occupying Palestinian and other Arab lands, continuing to dispossess the native inhabitants at an accelerating rate and as just documented by an EU commission, Israel's treatment of its Palestinian/Arab citizens is terrible.

Indeed....Syria is in the cross hairs of possible sanctions while the Bahrainis get more military equipment....

Both of these Israel firsters should be thrown out of office. The recent article in the Atlanta Jewish Times suggesting that the Mossad assassinate the POTUS for his insufficiently zealous Israel worship should be a wake up call to all Americans that their foreign- and even in some areas, domestic- policy has been hijacked by a foreign entity.
America gained its independence from one foreign entity; now it is in danger to becoming enslaved to the interests of another.

Live in NY? Citizen? Have one vote? Use it the way you see fit. May be it will help to cure your hate a little. Alas I doubt it

This is not suprising coming from Charles "I was chosen by God to be Senator to protect Israel" Schumer.

Why not sanctions against Communist China - the world's greatest human rights abuser? When was the last time they had a free election? Of course, our corporate rulers would never allow that. They might have to bring some of their factories back to America and create some jobs, God forbid.
