Bountiful, Utah: Cars Crash During Snowstorm, Rhee Braby Catches Collisions On Film (VIDEO)

01/23/12 07:12 PM ET   AP

SALT LAKE CITY -- Video from Utah during a major snowstorm shows more than a dozen cars sliding, crashing and skidding sideways down a street in just a few hours.

Rhee Braby shot the video from his Bountiful home, about 10 miles north of Salt Lake City.

He says neighbors were even perched at the top of the road Saturday, warning drivers not to attempt the hill, but many continued on and lost control. One car even crashed into a snowplow.

Between crashes, the 34-year-old says he helped push cars back onto the road only to see another come sliding down behind it.

The Utah Highway Patrol says 376 crashes of some sort were reported from Saturday through Sunday afternoon in five northern Utah counties, leading to at least 34 injuries but no fatalities.

Having driven in winter conditions for over 40 years I can tell you that 4 Wheel Drive is not going to have any effect on controlling a slide. I would rather have front wheel drive, with studded snow tires which are outlawed in UT because they work. Notice how many of the cars had their front wheels turned but the brakes locked up the wheels so the car would only slide. Let off the brake so the wheels can rotate thereby you can control the car. Oh well it was funny.

So was it film or tape or solid state MP3 capture of these images?

So much for AWD /4WD.....

What were they thinking that their tires are made out of velcro?

In addition to AWD or 4X4, you need snow tires.

Excellent point.
I've seen too many drivers who think AWD / 4WD makes them invincible to skidding.
Once you lose traction and start to skid, you're pretty much just along for the ride and not in control.

Control is key.

That magic underwear can sometimes make you feel a bit overconfident.

no sympathy at all for these morons...where do you have to go that is so important to risk life and property? we have known what cars will do on ice since cars were invented. they were driving like they didn't know ice was slippery. geez...

People say that Southerners can't drive in the snow. Apparently we aren't the only ones! Seriously though - it's for the same reason - we get ice FIRST.

That particular hill is extremely steep and Saturday's weather made for worse than normal driving conditions. It had been raining all morning and then the rain quickly turned to snow. No matter what state you live in, ice is slippery. So it's not just a Utah thing, bad drivers are everywhere.

I used to be young and stupid enough to think that I could drive through any kind of weather.

Now, I'm older and getting senile and stock up a day or two before anything hits, because you couldn't pay me enough to be back out there with people who are still young enough and stupid enough to think they can drive through anything.

Where's the clown music.

After seeing everyone crash, I would have just parked my car and walked.

I have to laugh when people actually believe in car commercials.. see you can have 4 wheel drive and special tires, but guess what,, when there's snow and ice,, we're all equal..
